Abstract

We present an exact quantum dissipation theory in terms of the hierarchical equations‐of‐motion formalism for an arbitrary open electronic system. This formalism provides a theoretical tool to study various transient and stationary properties of many‐body systems far away from equilibrium. In contact with transport current, we explicitly show that how the hierarchial scheme relates to various tunneling processes, such as sequential tunneling, cotunneling, and high‐order events. The present hierarchical scheme numerically converges in general. It accounts for the combined effects of the many‐particle interaction within the system and the nature of the system‐bath coupling. In particular, for noninteracting systems, it terminates at the second tier exactly.

Dynamics of dissipative electronic systems and quantum transport: Hierarchical equations of motion approach

YiJing Yan

A quantum dissipation theory is formulated in terms of hierarchically coupled equations of motion for an arbitrary fermionic system coupled with grand canonical fermionic bath ensembles.1 The theoretical construction starts with the second-quantization influence functional in path integral formalism, in which the fermionic creation and annihilation operators are represented by Grassmann variables. Temporal derivatives on influence functionals are then performed in a hierarchical manner, on the basis of calculus-on-path-integral algorithm. Both the multiple-frequency-dispersion and the non-Markovian reservoir parametrization schemes are considered for the desired hierarchy construction. The resulting formalism is in principle exact, applicable to interacting systems, with arbitrary time-dependent external fields. It renders an exact tool to evaluate various transient and stationary quantum transport properties of many-electron systems. At the second-tier truncation level the present theory recovers the real-time diagrammatic formalism developed by Schön and coworkers.2 For a single-particle system, the hierarchical formalism terminates at the second tier exactly, and the Landuer-Büttiker's transport current expression is readily recovered. Numerical studies will be presented to highlight the richness of transient current through both interacting and noninteracting model systems.

Exact dynamics of dissipative electronic systems and quantum transport: Hierarchical equations of motion approach

Jinshuang Jin, Xiao Hong Zheng, YiJing Yan

A generalized quantum master equation theory that governs the exact, nonperturbative quantum dissipation and quantum transport is formulated in terms of hierarchically coupled equations of motion for an arbitrary electronic system in contact with electrodes under either a stationary or a nonstationary electrochemical potential bias. The theoretical construction starts with the influence functional in path integral, in which the electron creation and annihilation operators are Grassmann variables. Time derivatives on the influence functionals are then performed in a hierarchical manner. Both the multiple-frequency dispersion and the non-Markovian reservoir parametrization schemes are considered for the desired hierarchy construction. The resulting hierarchical equations of motion formalism is in principle exact and applicable to arbitrary electronic systems, including Coulomb interactions, under the influence of arbitrary time-dependent applied bias voltage and external fields. Both the conventional quantum master equation and the real-time diagrammatic formalism of Schon and co-workers can be readily obtained at well defined limits of the present theory. We also show that for a noninteracting electron system, the present hierarchical equations of motion formalism terminates at the second tier exactly, and the Landuer-Buttiker transport current expression is recovered. The present theory renders an exact and numerically tractable tool to evaluate various transient and stationary quantum transport properties of many-electron systems, together with the involving nonperturbative dissipative dynamics.

Hierarchical Equations of Motion for Quantum Dissipation and Quantum Transport

Zheng Xiao, Rui‐Xue Xu, Jian Xu +3 more

In this review we give a comprehensive account of a hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) approach to the characterization of stationary and dynamic properties of open quantum systems. This approach is rooted at the Feynman-Vernon influence functional path integral formalism, but much more implementable numerically and operationally for the study of various complex molecular dynamics and quantum transport in strongly correlated electronic systems. By construction, HEOM resolves nonperturbatively the combined effects of many-particle interaction, system-bath coupling, and non-Markovian memory. Finally the practicality of HEOM to address physical and chemical problems is exemplified with a model simulation of coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy signals of a biological light-harvesting system and a time-dependent quantum transport system involving dynamic Kondo transition.

Theoretical method for open quantum systems: Progresses and perspectives

YiJing Yan

The hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) formalism developed recently is becoming an important method for investigating the properties and dynamical processes of quantum open systems. A comprehensive account on its establishment and recent development was given, covering theoretical formulations, numerical algorithm and practical applications. By construction HEOM resolves in a nonperturbative manner the combined effects of many-body interaction, system-environment coupling and non-Markovian memory. While it is mathematically equivalent to an exact path integral formalism, HEOM is also very convenient in computation and versatile in various systems of study. Moreover, it is shown recently that HEOM is actually a correlated system-environment dynamics theory. The practicality of HEOM to address physical and chemical problems was exemplified with examples relevant to quantum dissipation and quantum transport.

Dissipation equation of motion approach to open quantum systems

YiJing Yan, Jinshuang Jin, Rui‐Xue Xu +1 more

This paper presents a comprehensive account of the dissipaton-equation-of-motion (DEOM) theory for open quantum systems. This newly developed theory treats not only the quantum dissipative systems of primary interest, but also the hybrid environment dynamics that are also experimentally measurable. Despite the fact that DEOM recovers the celebrated hierarchical-equations-of-motion (HEOM) formalism, these two approaches have some fundamental differences. To show these differences, we also scrutinize the HEOM construction via its root at the influence functional path integral formalism. We conclude that many unique features of DEOM are beyond the reach of the HEOM framework. The new DEOM approach renders a statistical quasi-particle picture to account for the environment, which can be either bosonic or fermionic. The review covers the DEOM construction, the physical meanings of dynamical variables, the underlying theorems and dissipaton algebra, and recent numerical advancements for efficient DEOM evaluations of various problems. We also address the issue of high-order many-dissipaton truncations with respect to the invariance principle of quantum mechanics of Schrödinger versus Heisenberg prescriptions. DEOM serves as a universal tool for characterizing of stationary and dynamic properties of system-and-bath interferences, as highlighted with its real-time evaluation of both linear and nonlinear current noise spectra of nonequilibrium electronic transport.

Dynamics of quantum dissipation systems interacting with bosonic canonical bath: Hierarchical equations of motion approach

Rui‐Xue Xu, YiJing Yan

A nonperturbative theory is developed, aiming at an exact and efficient evaluation of a general quantum system interacting with arbitrary bath environment at any temperature and in the presence of arbitrary time-dependent external fields. An exact hierarchical equations of motion formalism is constructed on the basis of a calculus-on-path-integral algorithm, via the auxiliary influence generating functionals related to the interaction bath correlation functions in a parametrization expansion form. The corresponding continued-fraction Green's functions formalism for quantum dissipation is also presented. Proposed further is the principle of residue correction, not just for truncating the infinite hierarchy, but also for incorporating the small residue dissipation that may arise from the practical difference between the true and parametrized bath correlation functions. The final residue-corrected hierarchical equations of motion can therefore be used practically for the evaluation of arbitrary dissipative quantum systems.
