Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive account of the dissipaton-equation-of-motion (DEOM) theory for open quantum systems. This newly developed theory treats not only the quantum dissipative systems of primary interest, but also the hybrid environment dynamics that are also experimentally measurable. Despite the fact that DEOM recovers the celebrated hierarchical-equations-of-motion (HEOM) formalism, these two approaches have some fundamental differences. To show these differences, we also scrutinize the HEOM construction via its root at the influence functional path integral formalism. We conclude that many unique features of DEOM are beyond the reach of the HEOM framework. The new DEOM approach renders a statistical quasi-particle picture to account for the environment, which can be either bosonic or fermionic. The review covers the DEOM construction, the physical meanings of dynamical variables, the underlying theorems and dissipaton algebra, and recent numerical advancements for efficient DEOM evaluations of various problems. We also address the issue of high-order many-dissipaton truncations with respect to the invariance principle of quantum mechanics of Schrödinger versus Heisenberg prescriptions. DEOM serves as a universal tool for characterizing of stationary and dynamic properties of system-and-bath interferences, as highlighted with its real-time evaluation of both linear and nonlinear current noise spectra of nonequilibrium electronic transport.

Statistical quasi-particle theory for open quantum systems

Hou-Dao Zhang, Rui‐Xue Xu, Xiao Hong Zheng +1 more

This paper presents a comprehensive account on the recently developed dissipaton–equation–of–motion (DEOM) theory. This is a statistical quasi-particle theory for quantum dissipative dynamics. It accurately describes the influence of bulk environments, with a few number of quasi-particles, the dissipatons. The novel dissipaton algebra is then followed, which readily bridges the Schrödinger equation to the DEOM theory. As a fundamental theory of quantum mechanics in open systems, DEOM characterizes both the stationary and dynamic properties of system–and–bath interferences. It treats not only the quantum dissipative systems of primary interest, but also the hybrid environment dynamics that could be experimentally measurable. Examples are the linear or nonlinear Fano interferences and the Herzberg–Teller vibronic couplings in optical spectroscopies. This review covers the DEOM construction, the underlying dissipaton algebra and theorems, the physical meanings of dynamical variables, the possible identifications of dissipatons, and some recent advancements in efficient DEOM evaluations on various problems. The relations of the present theory to other nonperturbative methods are also critically presented.

Dissipaton equation of motion theory versus Fokker-Planck quantum master equation

Yang Liu, Rui‐Xue Xu, Hou-Dao Zhang +1 more

The quest of exact and nonperturbative methods on quantum dissipation with nonlinear coupling environments remains in general a great challenge. In this review we present a comprehensive account on two approaches to the entangled system-and-environment dynamics, in the presence of linear-plus-quadratic coupling bath. One is the dissipaton-equation-of-motion (DEOM) theory that has been extended recently to treat the nonlinear coupling environment. Another is the extended Fokker-Planck quantum master equation (FP-QME) approach that will be constructed in this work, based on its DEOM correspondence. We closely compare these two approaches, with the focus on the underlying quasi-particle picture, physical implications, and implementations.

Quantum mechanics of open systems: Dissipaton theories

Yao Wang, YiJing Yan

This Perspective presents a comprehensive account of the dissipaton theories developed in our group since 2014, including the physical picture of dissipatons and the phase-space dissipaton algebra. The dissipaton-equation-of-motion-space (DEOM-space) formulations cover the Schrödinger picture, the Heisenberg picture, and further the imaginary-time DEOM. Recently developed are the dissipaton theories for studying equilibrium and nonequilibrium thermodynamic mixing processes. The Jarzynski equality and Crooks relation are accurately reproduced numerically. It is anticipated that dissipaton theories would remain essential toward a maturation of quantum mechanics of open systems.

Theory of Quantum Dissipation in a Class of Non-Gaussian Environments

Rui‐Xue Xu, Yang Liu, Hou-Dao Zhang +1 more

In this work we construct a novel dissipaton-equation-of-motion (DEOM) theory in quadratic bath coupling environment, based on an extended algebraic statistical quasi-particle approach. To validate the new ingredient of the underlying dissipaton algebra, we derive an extended Zusman equation via a totally different approach. We prove that the new theory, if it starts with the identical setup, constitutes the dynamical resolutions to the extended Zusman equation. Thus, we verify the generalized (non-Gaussian) Wick's theorem with dissipatons-pair added. This new algebraic ingredient enables the dissipaton approach being naturally extended to nonlinear coupling environments. Moreover, it is noticed that, unlike the linear bath coupling case, the influence of a non-Gaussian environment cannot be completely characterized with the linear response theory. The new theory has to take this fact into account. The developed DEOM theory manifests the dynamical interplay between dissipatons and nonlinear bath coupling descriptors that will be specified. Numerical demonstrations will be given with the optical line shapes in quadratic coupling environment.

Theoretical method for open quantum systems: Progresses and perspectives

YiJing Yan

The hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) formalism developed recently is becoming an important method for investigating the properties and dynamical processes of quantum open systems. A comprehensive account on its establishment and recent development was given, covering theoretical formulations, numerical algorithm and practical applications. By construction HEOM resolves in a nonperturbative manner the combined effects of many-body interaction, system-environment coupling and non-Markovian memory. While it is mathematically equivalent to an exact path integral formalism, HEOM is also very convenient in computation and versatile in various systems of study. Moreover, it is shown recently that HEOM is actually a correlated system-environment dynamics theory. The practicality of HEOM to address physical and chemical problems was exemplified with examples relevant to quantum dissipation and quantum transport.

Hierarchical Equations of Motion for Quantum Dissipation and Quantum Transport

Zheng Xiao, Rui‐Xue Xu, Jian Xu +3 more

In this review we give a comprehensive account of a hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) approach to the characterization of stationary and dynamic properties of open quantum systems. This approach is rooted at the Feynman-Vernon influence functional path integral formalism, but much more implementable numerically and operationally for the study of various complex molecular dynamics and quantum transport in strongly correlated electronic systems. By construction, HEOM resolves nonperturbatively the combined effects of many-particle interaction, system-bath coupling, and non-Markovian memory. Finally the practicality of HEOM to address physical and chemical problems is exemplified with a model simulation of coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy signals of a biological light-harvesting system and a time-dependent quantum transport system involving dynamic Kondo transition.
