Abstract

We investigate the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in Rb atoms interacting with a pseudothermal probe light exhibiting a Bose–Einstein photon number distribution. The EIT spectrum in the 5S1/2−5P1/2 transition of the Λ-type system of the 87Rb atom was observed using a coupling laser and the pseudothermal probe light generated by passing the probe laser though a rotating rough disk. From the EIT spectrum with pseudothermal light, we experimentally demonstrated that the fluctuation of the number of photons was the same as the superposition of frequency noise of the probe light. The coherence time of the pseudothermal probe light was estimated from the measured EIT spectra. We confirmed that the experimental results as a function of the rotating speed of the rough disk were in good agreement with the numerically calculated results.

Transfer of photon number statistics from coupling light to stored and retrieved probe light

In‐Ho Bae, Han Seb Moon

We report on the transfer of statistical characteristics from writing and reading coupling light to stored and retrieved probe light pulses in a Λ-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) scheme based on the 5S(1/2)-5P(1/2) transition of (87)Rb atoms. When the coherent probe laser pulse was stored in the EIT medium using the pseudo-thermal coupling light, the characteristics of the pseudo-thermal writing coupling light were transferred to the stored probe laser pulse because of the strong correlation between the probe and coupling light in the EIT medium. The photon number statistics of the retrieved probe light changed from Poisson distribution to Bose-Einstein distribution. Additionally, we measured the change in the properties of the retrieved light pulse due to the photon number statistics of the pseudo-thermal reading coupling light.

Observation of an Electromagnetically Induced Grating in Cold 85Rb Atoms

Hengfei Zhang, Jinpeng Yuan, Shichao Dong +2 more

Electromagnetically induced grating (EIG) is extensively investigated as an artificial periodic structure in recent years owed to its simple reconfiguration and flexible adjustability. We report the experimental observation of EIG in cold rubidium atoms. The coupling and probe lasers are corresponding to the 5S1/2−5P1/2 and 5S1/2−5P3/2 transitions of a V-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) configuration, respectively. A clear spatial intensity distribution of the probe laser with distinguished third-order diffraction pattern is recorded to character the EIG. The influence of the pertinent experimental parameters, such as coupling laser intensity and two-photon detuning on the diffraction pattern is investigated in detail. This is the first observation in visual form of the EIG in cold rubidium atoms. These results may potentially provide a nondestructive method to image cold atoms and pave the way for investigating non-Hermitian physics and the control of light dynamics.

Contrasts of electromagnetically-induced transparency in unperturbed and perturbed cold atoms of 87Rb

Hoon Yu, Mi Hyun Choi, Seung Jin Kim +1 more

We experimentally measured the relative contrast of an electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) spectrum with two cw lasers in a Λ-type system of magneto-optically trapped 87 Rb atoms, which is a perturbed cold atomic medium. The contrast depends nonlinearly on the power of the coupling beam. Experimental results showed good agreement qualitatively with the simulation results considering the trapping magnetic field gradient, which induced detuning of the coupling laser. We used a free expanding cold atomic cloud that had a temperature of (36 ± 1) µK. To observe the EIT spectrum in the non-perturbed medium, we used two pulsed lasers. We observed that the relative contrast in the unperturbed medium was three times higher than that in the perturbed medium under our experimental conditions.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a Zeeman-sublevels Λ -system of cold 87 Rb atoms in free space

Xiaojun Jiang, Haichao Zhang, Yuzhu Wang

We report the experimental investigation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a Zeeman-sublevels Λ -type system of cold 87 Rb atoms in free space. We use the Zeeman substates of the hyperfine energy states 5 2 S 1/2 , F = 2 and 5 2 P 3/2 , F ' = 2 of 87 Rb D 2 line to form a Λ -type EIT scheme. The EIT signal is obtained by scanning the probe light over 1 MHz in 4 ms with an 80 MHz arbitrary waveform generator. More than 97% transparency and 100 kHz EIT window are observed. This EIT scheme is suited for an application of pulsed coherent storage atom clock (Yan B, et al. 2009 Phys. Rev. A 79 063820).

Effect of four-wave mixing on electromagnetically induced transparency in -type system with a two-photon probe field

Yanliang Zhang, Jiang Li, Zhenrong Sun +2 more

Using density matrix equation, we calculate analytically as well as numerically the effect of the four-wave mixing (FWM) field on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the rubidium 5S1/2-5P3/2-5D5/2 Λ-type system with a two-photon probe field. The calculated results are in good agreement with Fulton's experimental results in 1995 Phys. Rev. A 52 2302.
