Collective Mode of Semion Systems

Abstract

The ground and the excited states of a two-dimensional anyon system are studied via finite-size numerical calculations and single-mode approximation in a spherical geometry. It is shown that Laughlin's mean field theory gives an accurate description of the ground state properties. We find, consistent with earlier analytic theories, that the collective mode of the system exhibits a linear dispersion in the long wavelength limit, and predict a novel roton minimum at a finite value of the wavenumber q. We also discuss the consequences on the anyon spectrum of having a model repulsive interaction between the particles.

Collective modes of an anyon gas on a lattice

Fu‐Chun Zhang, Michael R. Norman

We study a tight-binding model for anyons on a square lattice using a self-consistent mean-field theory, where the anyon gauge field is approximated by its expectation value. For any anyon density per site ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}_{0}$=p/q and statistics \ensuremath{\nu}=1-1/n, the anyon system has a linear collective mode if and only if q is greater than twice the largest common factor of p and n. The collective mode dispersion, \ensuremath{\omega}(k), is calculated numerically for n=1 (hard-core bosons) and n=2 (semions) at certain densities.

Collective excitations in a two-dimensional dipole system

Kenneth I. Golden, Gabor J. Kalman, Zoltán Donkó +1 more

We address the question of collective excitations in two-dimensional (2D) dipolar systems. The main issue is that such systems have no Hartree and no random-phase-approximation (RPA) limits and calculations have to include particle correlations from the outset. We focus on the longitudinal collective mode representing the density oscillations of the dipoles and on the transverse collective mode representing shear waves. Our theoretical approach is based on the quasi-localized charge approximation (QLCA) adapted to point-dipole systems interacting through a 1/ r 3 potential. Our analytical calculation is accompanied by classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. At long wavelengths, the longitudinal and transverse collective excitations exhibit acoustic behaviors with phase velocities that vary linearly with the dipole strength and are wholly maintained by particle correlations. At finite wavenumbers, the mode dispersion resulting from our classical MD simulations shows a roton-like behavior. Comparison with the quantum Monte Carlo dispersion generated through the Feynman relation (Astrakharchik et al 2007 Phys. Rev. Lett. 98 060405) shows a remarkably good quantitative agreement between the two.

DERIVATION OF LAUGHLIN'S WAVEFUNCTION IN ANYON SYSTEM

Z. F. Ezawa, Aiichi Iwazaki

In a semiclassical approximation we derive the ground-state wavefunction of the system of anyons in an external magnetic field, where anyons are interacting via the Coulomb interaction. The statistical interactions are treated in perturbation around the boson limit. The wavefunction coincides with the Laughlin wavefunction except for small corrections due to the Coulomb interaction. We also calculate the ground-state energy and the excitation spectrum.

The anyon fluid in the Bogoliubov approximation

Carlo A. Trugenberger

We study the free anyon fluid by extending the usual Bogoliubov approximation to the case of nonlocal "statistical" interactions. We thereby compute the ground-state energy, the spectrum of low-lying excitations, the static structure factor, and the pair distribution function. The ground-state energy depends crucially on the magnetic dimension of the anyons, a scale that is unavoidably present at the quantum level. The linearly dispersing collective mode in the excitation spectrum indicates superfluidity.
