Abstract

Abstract We present an extension of the previous descriptions based on the Dynamics Controlled Truncation Scheme of light‐matter interaction beyond mean‐field, including the microscopic description of the exciton‐photon interaction. This enables the microscopic analysis of the influence of decoherence and noise on the polariton quantum correlations originating from nonlinear optical processes. We expand the operators involved in the dynamics in terms of exact eigenstates of the electron system, the photon and phonon operators and treat phonon‐assisted transitions within the Markov approximation. In particular, we present quantum Heisenberg‐Langevin equations describing light‐induced excitations in semiconductor systems interacting with the phonon bath. This theoretical framework is applied to study the influence of dephasing and noise due to photoluminescence on polariton quantum correlations generated by parametric emission in microcavities. Nonequilibrium Langevin approach to quantum optics in semiconductor microcavities

S. Portolan, Omar Di Stefano, Salvatore Savasta +2 more

Recently, the possibility of generating nonclassical polariton states by means of parametric scattering has been demonstrated. Excitonic polaritons propagate in a complex interacting environment and contain real electronic excitations subject to scattering events and noise affecting quantum coherence and entanglement. Here, we present a general theoretical framework for the realistic investigation of polariton quantum correlations in the presence of coherent and incoherent interaction processes. The proposed theoretical approach is based on the nonequilibrium quantum Langevin approach for open systems applied to interacting-electron complexes described within the dynamics controlled truncation scheme. It provides an easy recipe to calculate multitime correlation functions which are key quantities in quantum optics. As a first application, we analyze the buildup of polariton parametric emission in semiconductor microcavities including the influence of noise originating from phonon-induced scattering.

Dynamics-controlled truncation scheme for quantum optics and nonlinear dynamics in semiconductor microcavities

S. Portolan, Omar Di Stefano, Salvatore Savasta +2 more

We present a systematic theory of Coulomb-induced correlation effects in the nonlinear optical processes within the strong-coupling regime. In this paper, we shall set a dynamics controlled truncation scheme microscopic treatment of nonlinear parametric processes in semiconductor microcavities including the electromagnetic field quantization. It represents the starting point for the microscopic approach to quantum optics experiments in the strong-coupling regime without any assumption on the quantum statistics of electronic excitations (excitons) involved. We exploit a previous technique, which was used in the semiclassical context, which, once applied to four-wave mixing in quantum wells, allowed us to understand a wide range of observed phenomena. We end up with dynamical equations for exciton and photon operators, which extend the usual semiclassical description of Coulomb interaction effects in terms of a mean-field term plus a genuine noninstantaneous four-particle correlation to quantum optical effects.

Statistics of polaritons in microcavities

P. Schwendimann, Cristiano Ciuti, A. Quattropani

We discuss the quantum statistical properties of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. The nonlinear dynamics is treated within a model of interacting bosons for the signal, pump and idler modes. We focus on the regime of parametric amplification below threshold. We present the time evolution of the signal and idler modes towards their stationary solutions and evaluate the amount of squeezing of the radiation emitted out of the microcavity in a configuration, which is relevant for experiments. Quantum optics with interacting polaritons

Salvatore Savasta, Omar Di Stefano

Abstract Recent theoretical and experimental investigations evidencing quantum optical effects in semiconductor microcavities are reported. In particular the results of an experiment that probes polariton quantum correlations by exploiting quantum complementarity are described. In this experiment, it has been shown that polaritons in two distinct idler modes interfere if and only if they share the same signal mode so that which‐way information cannot be gathered, according to Bohr's quantum complementarity principle. The experimental results prove the existence of polariton pair correlations that store the which‐way information. This interpretation is confirmed by a theoretical analysis of the measured interference visibility in terms of quantum Langevin equations. The devised experimental scheme employs two frequency‐degenerate mutually‐coherent pump modes. It is shown that this kind of two‐pump parametric schemes can be exploited to realize a number of interesting tasks as the emission of polarization‐entangled cavity‐polariton states and the coherent control and trapping of parametric amplification in SMCs. Nonlinear optical response and exciton dephasing in quantum dots

E. A. Muljarov, R. Zimmermann

Abstract The full time‐dependent four‐wave mixing polarization in quantum dots is microscopically calculated, taking into account acoustic phonon‐assisted transitions between different exciton states of the dot. It is shown that quite different dephasing times of higher exciton states in pancake anisotropic InGaAs quantum dots are responsible for the experimentally observed [1] double‐exponential decay in the photon echo signal. Phonon‐induced disentanglement of confined excitons

Katarzyna Roszak, Paweł Machnikowski, Lucjan Jacak

Abstract We show that phonon‐induced pure dephasing of excitons in quantum dots, which leads only to partial decay of system coherence, may completely erase entanglement between two excitons. We also discuss the role of the distance between the subsystems for this disentanglement process. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
