Quantum nondemolition measurements of photon number by atomic beam deflection

Murray Holland, Daniel F. Walls, P. Zoller

We present a new quantum nondemolition measurement scheme in which a measure of the photon statistics of a cavity field can be achieved by monitoring the deflection of atoms interacting with the field. Repeated measurements result in the collapse of the photon distribution in the field to a number state. Quantum jumps in the photon number are observed when the cavity field is coupled to an external reservoir.

Atom de Broglie Wave Deflection by a Single Cavity Mode in the Few-Photon Limit: Quantum Prism

P. Domokos, Петер Адам, József Janszky +1 more

It is shown that the deflection of an atom de Broglie wave at a nonresonant weak cavity field mode can yield a pure entangled quantum state in which discernable atomic beams are entangled to photon number states of the field and to internal states of the atom. The proposed experimental scheme is shown to be applicable for quantum nondemolition measurement of the photon statistics, and for quantum state engineering and reconstruction experiments.

Quantum-nondemolition determination of an atomic state via the optical Stern-Gerlach effect

S. M. Tan, Daniel F. Walls

The near-resonant interaction of an atomic beam with an optical standing-wave field can produce a deflection of the beam that depends on the initial atomic state. We investigate the extent to which the momentum transfer may be regarded as a coherent nondestructive encoding of the internal atomic state on the center-of-mass motion. Techniques developed for analyzing quantum-nondemolition measurements are used to quantify the effectiveness of this encoding. The effects of varying the detuning and the profile of the optical beam are discussed using parameter values close to those recently realized experimentally by Sleator et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 1996 (1992)].
