Abstract

Summary form only given. It is well known that two-photon absorption can be greatly enhanced whenever a single photon energy approaches an allowed atomic transition. If more than one intermediate state exists, the two-photon absorption can be annihilated depending on the location of the intermediate states. In case there is only one intermediate state, a control laser can be applied to couple the intermediate state with other state to create two dressed states. Then, the medium can be made transparent against two-photon absorption in the presence of multiple pathways. We report the first observation of electromagnetically induced two-photon absorption reduction in sodium vapor.

Electromagnetically induced inhibition of two-photon absorption in sodium vapor

Jin-Yue Gao, Suhui Yang, Dong Wang +4 more

We report the observation of the electromagnetically induced inhibition of two-photon absorption with atomic sodium vapor as a test medium. A 60% reduction of two-photon resonant absorption was recorded at the $3S\ensuremath{-}4D$ transition when a cw coupling laser was applied at the $3P\ensuremath{-}5S$ transition.

Electromagnetically induced two-photon transparency in rubidium atoms

Dong Wang, Jinwei Gao, J. H. Xu +2 more

We present an experimental demonstration of electromagnetically induced two-photon transparency (EITT) in room temperature rubidium vapor. The 8 S 1/2 to 5 P 1/2 fluorescence is used to monitor the 5 S 1/2 ( F = 3) to 8 S 1/2 ( F = 3) two-photon absorption near resonance with the intermediate state 5 P 3/2 . A controlling pump laser beam is employed to coherently couple the 5 P 3/2 and 5 D 5/2 states, thus producing two dressed intermediate states which give rise to destructive interference in the two-photon transition. An induced two-photon transparency of about 80% has been obtained at resonance; our experimental findings are in good agreement with the general theory of Agarwal et al. ( Phys. Rev. Lett. , 77 (1996) 1039), when the appropriate spectroscopic parameters are used.

Electromagnetically induced two-photon transparency in a four-level system of rubidium atom

Dong Wang, Jin-Yue Gao, Jihua Xu +2 more

An experimental study of electromagnetically induced two- photon transparency (EITT) in rubidium atomic vapor at room temperature is presented. A four level system is considered, involving the two-photon absorption process 5S1/2 to 8S1/2 via an intermediate state 5P3/2, and the single- photon control process 5P3/2 to 5D5/2. A controlling pump laser beam is employed to coherently couple the 5P3/2 and 5D5/2 states, thus producing two dressed intermediate states, which give rise to destructive interference in the two-photon transition. Fluorescence from 8S1/2 to 5P1/2 is used to monitor the 5S1/2(Fequals3) to 8S1/2(Fequals3) two-photon absorption. An induced two-photon transparency of about 80% has been obtained at resonance; the experimental results are in good agreement with the general theory of Agarwal, when the appropriate spectroscopic parameters are employed.

Control of two-photon absorption by using electromagnetic field in sodium and rubidium vapors

Dong Wang, Jin-Yue Gao, Ji-Hua Xu +2 more

We applied a pumping field to couple the middle level of two- photon absorption with the fourth level. Two-photon absorption minimum was observed. This is the first observation and experimental analysis of such phenomenon after it was predicted four years ago. In sodium vapor, two-photon absorption strength of 3S1/2(Fequals2)-3P3/2-4D3/2 was measured by detecting the fluorescence at 568.3 nm (4D3/2-3P1/2). Levels 3P3/2 and 5S1/2 were connected by pumping field. Experimental data of two-photon absorption strength vs detuning from middle level (TADM) shows that the two-photon absorption was reduced by 60% at line center in the presence of resonant pumping field. In rubidium vapor, two-photon absorption of 5S1/2(Fequals3)-5P3/2-8S1/2(Fequals3) was measured by detecting the fluorescence at 607 nm (8S1/2-5P1/2). Levels 5P3/2 and 5D5/2(Fequals5) were connected by pumping field. The TADM profiles under different experimental condition indicate that the maximum reduction of two-photon absorption can be 80%. And the reduction effect reduced with lower strength, higher detuning frequency and wider line width of pumping field. At the same time, the position of minimum absorption depends on the detuning of pumping field. All the experimental profiles were fitted well with theoretical calculation results.

Two-photon excitation via quantum interference

Neil Mulchan, Min Yan, D. G. Ducreay +1 more

Summary form only given. It has been shown that two-photon absorption can be controlled by quantum interference in the multiple excitation paths created by a coupling field. Recently, Harris and Yamamoto (1998) described a four-level system that utilizes electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) to switch on and off the two-photon excitation. Because the cancellation of the one-photon excitation, the enhanced two-photon excitation may be observable under very low light intensities. We have carried out an experimental study of two-photon excitation via quantum interference in multi-level Rb atomic systems based on the D/sub 1/ and D/sub 2/ transitions. The Rb systems can be viewed as quasi-four level systems. The experiments were done in an /sup 87/Rb isotope vapor cell.

Electromagnetically induced two-photon transparency in V model

Yang Su-hui, Wang Dong, Jin-Yue Gao

A new scheme of electromagnetically induced two-photon transparency in a four-level V-type Doppler-broadened medium is presented in this paper. Under a proper condition, the two-photon absorption can be greatly reduced by applying a control laser field with relatively lower intensity compared with that needed in other field-induced multi-photon absorption reduction.
