Generation of nonclassical states of light via photon blockade in optical nanocavities

Abstract

The generation of nonclassical states of light via photon blockade with time-modulated input is analyzed. We show that improved single-photon statistics can be obtained by adequately choosing the parameters of the driving laser pulses. An alternative method, where the system is driven via a continuous-wave laser and the frequency of the dipole is controlled (e.g., electrically) at very fast time scales is presented.

Optimal pulse to generate non-classical photon states via photon blockade

Arka Majumdar, Andrei Faraon, Jelena Vuckovic A

The single photon character of nonclassical states of light that can be generated using photon blockade is analyzed for time domain operation. We show that improved single photon statistics (single photon around 85% with a multi-photon of 8%) can be obtained by adequately choosing the parameters (mainly amplitude and pulseduration) of the driving laser pulses. An alternative method, where the system is driven via a continuous wave laser and the frequency of the dipole is controlled (e.g. electrically) at very fast timescales is presented. We also show that this non-classical state performs better than a weak coherent pulse, when applied to BB84 quantum cryptography protocol.

Electromagnetic control and improvement of nonclassicality in a strongly coupled single-atom cavity-QED system

Yufeng Han, Chengjie Zhu, Xiangyong Huang +1 more

We present a proposal to control and improve the nonclassicality of photons in a single-atom cavity-QED system with a strong coupling strength, where the atom is directly driven by external fields. Exploring the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates of the system, we show that the dressed states can be optically manipulated by changing the control field intensity. In particular, tuning the control field frequency to be resonant with the one-photon excitation state, we show that the nonclassicality of cavity photons arising from the two-photon blockade can be actively controlled. We also show that there exists a magic control field Rabi frequency at which the two-photon blockade phenomenon can be significantly improved. The work presented here provides an optical method to control the statistical features of the cavity field that could find utility in nonclassical light generation, photon gateway operation, and exotic quantum-state generation.

Single photon nonlinear optics with quantum dots in photonic crystal resonators

Andrei Faraon, Dirk Englund, Ilya Fushman +3 more

A photonic crystal cavity with a strongly coupled quantum dot is coherently driven using short laser pulses. Depending on the driving frequency, photon blockade or photon induced tunneling is observed. These nonlinear phenomena at single photon level are used for on-chip generation of nonclassical light.

Coherent Generation of Nonclassical Light on Chip via Detuned Photon Blockade

Kai Müller, Armand Rundquist, Kevin A. Fischer +7 more

The on-chip generation of nonclassical states of light is a key requirement for future optical quantum hardware. In solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics, such nonclassical light can be generated from self-assembled quantum dots strongly coupled to photonic crystal cavities. Their anharmonic strong light-matter interaction results in large optical nonlinearities at the single photon level, where the admission of a single photon into the cavity may enhance (photon tunneling) or diminish (photon blockade) the probability for a second photon to enter the cavity. Here, we demonstrate that detuning the cavity and quantum-dot resonances enables the generation of high-purity nonclassical light from strongly coupled systems. For specific detunings we show that not only the purity but also the efficiency of single-photon generation increases significantly, making high-quality single-photon generation by photon blockade possible with current state-of-the-art samples.

Single-photon generation by pulsed laser in optomechanical system via photon blockade effect

Liu Qiu, Lin Gan, Wei Ding +1 more

We theoretically analyzed the photon quantum statistics properties of the output field from an optomechanical system driven by different pulsed lasers. Our results show that the probability of generating a single-photon state at the photon blockade region is greatly dependent on properties such as the shape, area, central frequency, length, and amplitude of the driving pulse. These results will give guidance to the design of the potential optimal optical pulse for generating a high-performance single-photon source.
