Phase Conjugation and Image-Retaining Reflection of KrF Laser Radiation at 2486Å

We report here the first observations of phase conjugation of KrF laser radiation at 2486Å. The laser employed was an injection-locked, unstable resonator, KrF double-discharge with 200 mJ, 20 ns output in a <0.1 Å bandwidth (coherence length ≈1 cm) nearly diffraction-limited beam.1 Using this laser three different nonlinear processes were investigated as to their phase conjugation and/or image retention properties: degenerate four-wave mixing, stimulated Brillouin scattering, and stimulated Raman scattering.

Phase conjugation of KrF laser radiation

R. G., M. C. Gower

Phase conjugation of radiation from a KrF laser (249 nm) is reported using degenerate four-wave mixing in CS(2) and in a variety of saturable absorbers. Dependence on input intensity and medium concentration is investigated. Reflectivities greater, similar2.5% have been measured. A thermal phase grating seems to be the mechanism involved.

Amplified phase conjugate reflection of KrF laser radiation

R. G., M. C. Gower

We report amplified phase conjugate reflection of KrF laser radiation at 249 nm using degenerate four-wave mixing in a solution of rhodamine 6G in ethanol. Reflectivities of ∼300% have been measured. Saturation of the reflectivity at high probe intensities was observed and the temporal dependence of the reflectivity has been investigated. The importance of mutual coherence of the probe and pump for the thermally induced nonlinearity involved in the process has been demonstrated.
