Abstract

The influence of losses and thermal noise on the polarization-squeezed light formation in type II second harmonic generation process has been analysed. New analysis method based on delta-correlation noise properties permitting to calculate correlated and noncorrelated parts of system operators with reservoir ones was employed. Mean values and variances of the Stokes parameter of the light have been calculated.

Polarization-Squeezed Light Formation in Cubic–Nonlinear Medium with Dissipation

A. S. Chirkin, V. V. Volokhovskii

The influence of losses and thermal noise on the polarization-squeezed light formation in a medium with third order nonlinearity has been analysed. A method of analysis based on the delta-correlation property of noise was developed. Mean values and variances of some Stokes parameter of the light was calculated. It was shown that optimal interaction length for effective fluctuation suppression in the Stokes parameters is determined by damping constants, noise level, and radiation intensity.

Formation and conversion of the polarization-squeezed light

Natalia Korolkova, A. S. Chirkin

We consider polarization-squeezed (PS) light generation in anisotropic Kerr medium. The fluctuations of the Stokes parameter either S 2 or S 3 are suppressed in PS light. We show the possibility to transform PS light into light with sub-Poissonian statistics by linear conversion (phase plate and analyser). The quantum properties of the second harmonic (SH) generated by frequency doubling of the PS light are investigated.

Generation of polarisation-squeezed light in a spatially periodic nonlinear optical medium with dissipation

V. V. Volokhovskii, Anatolii S Chirkin

An investigation is reported of the influence of losses and of thermal noise in a cubically nonlinear medium with a periodically inhomogeneous linear susceptibility on the generation of polarisation-squeezed light. Calculations are reported of the mean Stokes radiation parameters and of their variances. It is shown that the presence of losses is responsible for the existence of an interaction length optimal for suppression of fluctuations.

Formation of polarisation-squeezed light in type II optical frequency doubling

V. N. Beskrovnyi, Anatolii S Chirkin

A new efficient method for the generation of light with a nonclassical polarisation state is proposed. This method is based on second-harmonic generation by mixing the fundamental-frequency radiation with ordinary and extraordinary polarisations in a quadratically nonlinear crystal. It is shown that fundamental-frequency radiation with strongly suppressed quantum fluctuations of the Stokes parameters can be obtained at the output from this crystal.

Polarization-squeezed light: generation, effects of partial polarization, and linear and nonlinear conversion

Anatoliy S. Chirkin, Natalia Korolkova

We consider polarization-squeezed (PS) light generation in anisotropic homogeneous Kerr medium. The fluctuations of the Stokes parameter either S2 or S3 are suppressed in PS light. The influence of initial light depolarization on the fluctuation suppression of the Stokes parameters is analyzed. We show the possibility to transform PS light into light with sub-Poissonian statistics by linear conversion (phase plate and analyzer). The quantum properties of the SH generated by frequency doubling of the PS light are investigated.

Evolution of quantum noise in the traveling-wave second-order [χ^(2)] nonlinear process

Ruo-Ding Li, Prem Kumar

We analyze the evolution of quantum noise in both the fundamental and the harmonic fields that are undergoing traveling-wave interaction in a second-order [χ(2)] nonlinear medium. Assuming perfect phase matching between the fundamental and the harmonic fields and arbitrary input boundary conditions, the behavior of quantum noise in the propagating fields is studied by linearization of the nonlinear-operator equations around the mean-field values. We first consider the degenerate case that is applicable to type-I phase-matching geometries, obtaining expressions for squeezing in both the fundamental and the harmonic fields. We then analyze the polarization-nondegenerate case that applies to type-II phase-matching geometries. In the special case, when the two orthogonally polarized fundamental inputs are of equal amplitude, we obtain analytical results and show that the type-II phase-matched second-harmonic-generation process can be configured to generate sub-Poissonian light in both polarization components of the fundamental field. Finally, we numerically solve the linearized quadrature-operator equations along with the nonlinear mean-field equations for the general case of type-II phase matching. For both type-I and type-II processes, we find that whenever the fundamental field experiences deamplification it is associated with amplitude squeezing and phase desqueezing. If, in contrast, the fundamental field experiences amplification, then it is accompanied by amplitude desqueezing, but with squeezing in the phase quadrature. The harmonic field is amplitude squeezed if the input boundary condition leads to harmonic conversion and is phase squeezed if the input boundary condition leads to parametric amplification.
