Abstract

Using notions of supersymmetry, we present an exactly soluble model of anyons with both statistical and scalar interactions in 2+1 dimensions. We demonstrate that half-statistics particles with two spin flavors condense into a local singlet state which is both a charge superfluid and a ``spin metal'' in the sense that there is charge-pairing off-diagonal long-range order with gapless charge excitations, but a gap in the collective spin-mode spectrum. The present results shed considerable light on the mean-field theory of fractional statistics.

Fractionalized long-range ordered state in a Falicov-Kimball model

Minh-Tien Tran

A Falicov-Kimball model which thermodynamically reduces the local Coulomb interaction of particles to attraction or repulsion is studied within the dynamical mean-field theory. In the strong interaction regime a fractionalization of particles into charge and spin objects, the physical properties of which are different from the whole particles, is observed in both high- and low-temperature phases. At high temperature and strong interaction the single-particle density of states opens an excitation gap, but the charge compressibility and the spin susceptibility exhibit the features of gapless excitations. The low-temperature phase has a long-range order, and the single-particle spectra are always gapped, while the charge and spin excitations are gapless in the strong interaction regime. In the fractionalized long-range ordered phase both the charge compressibility and the spin susceptibility are universal scaling functions of temperature.

Exactly soluble lattice models for non-Abelian states of matter in two dimensions

Maciej Koch-Janusz, Michael Levin, Ady Stern

Following an earlier construction of exactly soluble lattice models for Abelian fractional topological insulators in two and three dimensions, we construct here an exactly soluble lattice model for a non-Abelian $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$ quantum Hall state and a non-Abelian topological insulator in two dimensions. We show that both models are topologically ordered, exhibiting fractionalized charge, ground-state degeneracy on the torus, and protected edge modes. The models feature non-Abelian vortices which carry fractional electric charge in the quantum Hall case and spin in the topological insulator case. We analyze the statistical properties of the excitations in detail and discuss the possibility of extending this construction to three-dimensional non-Abelian topological insulators.

Some Simple (Integrable) Models of Fractional Statistics

Denis Bernard

In the first part, we introduce the notion of fractional statistics in the sense of Haldane. We illustrate it on simple models related to anyon physics and to integrable models solvable by the Bethe ansatz. In the second part, we describe the properties of the long-range interacting spin chains. We describe its infinite dimensional symmetry, and we explain how the fractional statistics of its elementary excitations is an echo of this symmetry. In the third part, we review recent results on the Yangian representation theory which emerged from the study of the integrable long-range interacting models.

GAUGE INVARIANCE AND BROKEN SYMMETRIES IN ANYON SUPERFLUIDS

D. Boyanovsky

We review aspects of broken symmetry and the nature of long range order in theories of anyons starting with bosons with a statistical interaction. We introduce a novel gauge invariant quantization scheme that allows the identification of local and gauge invariant order parameters. The connection between spin and statistics is reviewed and the consequences of broken symmetries in the anyon representation are discussed. An anyon gas is studied in the Bogoliubov approximation, it is determined that the ground state is a condensate of charge-flux composites with “quasi-long-range order” at zero temperature, a “weak” gap in the spectrum and finite helicity modulus. The system is disordered at nonzero temperatures. The disorder is not caused by Goldstone bosons but by the strong infrared behavior arising from the Coulomb interaction induced by the long-range statistical interaction. The properties of topological vortices in nonrelativistic and in relativistic Landau-Ginzburg theories are studied in detail. We study the physics of the mean-field ansatz and quasi-long range order in a simple exactly soluble relativistic model. This model exhibits a novel phenomenon of charge redistribution to the boundaries and restoration of translational invariance in the infinite volume limit. It also illuminates the physics of quasi-long-range order with a gap in the spectrum, statistical charge polarization by external magnetic fields and the role of “large” gauge transformations.

Singlet-pair superconductivity in the two-component anyon gas

We consider a gas of fractional-statistics particles constructed by binding flux \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi} to fermions with charge \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1. In its ground state, the system is a superfluid condensate of s-wave pairs with no observable chirality.

Off-diagonal long-range order in Laughlin’s states for particles obeying fractional statistics

Jainendra K. Jain, N. Read

Laughlin has proposed mean-field wave functions for particles obeying (1-1/J) fractional statistics where J is an integer. We demonstrate off-diagonal long-range order in these wave functions, which is closely related to the off-diagonal long-range order in the electronic wave functions corresponding to J completely filled Landau levels. The presence of off-diagonal long-range order signifies Bose condensation of bosonlike multiplets containing J particles. For J=2, which may be relevant to high-temperature superconductivity, our result implies Cooper pairing in Laughlin's wave function for half-fermions.
