Abstract

A parametric source of polarization-entangled photon pairs with striking spatial characteristics is reported. The distribution of the output electromagnetic $\mathbf{k}$ modes excited by spontaneous parametric down-conversion and coupled to the output detectors can be very broad. Using these states realized over a full entanglement ring output distribution, the nonlocal properties of the generated entanglement have been tested by standard Bell measurements and by Ou-Mandel interferometry. A ``mode-patchwork'' technique based on the quantum superposition principle is adopted to synthesize in a straightforward and reliable way any kind of mixed state, of large conceptual and technological interest in modern quantum information. Tunable Werner states and maximally entangled mixed states have indeed been created by this technique and investigated by quantum tomography. A study of the entropic and nonlocal properties of these states has been undertaken experimentally and theoretically, by a unifying variational approach.

Generation and manipulation of entangled photon states by a universal source of entanglement

Maximally entangled states, Werner state and maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS) have been created and fully characterized by a novel high brilliance universal source of entangled photon pairs with striking spatial characteristics. Mixed states of any structure, spanning a 2 x 2 Hilbert space may be created by this source. The non local properties of the generated entanglement have been tested by standard Bell measurements. Tunable Werner states and Maximally Entangled Mixed States (MEMS) have been created by an original patchwork technique and investigated by quantum tomography. The entropic and nonlocal properties of these states have been also undertaken.

Generation and Characterization of Werner States and Maximally Entangled Mixed States by a Universal Source of Entanglement

Marco Barbieri, F. De Martini, G. Di Nepi +1 more

We present a novel technique for generating two-photon polarization mixed states of any structure, which is based on the peculiar spatial characteristics of a high brilliance source of entangled pairs. Werner states and maximally entangled mixed states, two well-known families of mixed states important for quantum information, have been created and fully characterized by this technique. We have also investigated and tested the nonlocal properties of these states.

Generation of (2 × 2) and (4 × 4) two‐photon states with tunable degree of entanglement and mixedness

Marco Barbieri, C. Cinelli, F. De Martini +1 more

Abstract A parametric source of polarization entangled photon pairs with peculiar spatial characteristics allows to generate any kind of bi‐partite entangled states with tunable dgree of entanglement and mixedness. In particular, maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS) have been created in a reliable way by a “patchwork” technique and investigated by quantum tomography. By the same source, momentum‐polarization hyper‐entangled two‐photon states have been synthesized. The quality of the entanglement in the two degrees of freedom has been tested by multimode Hong‐Ou‐Mandel interferometry.

Entangled mixed-state generation by twin-photon scattering

Graciana Puentes, Andrea Aiello, D. Voigt +1 more

We report experimental results on mixed-state generation by multiple scattering of polarization-entangled photon pairs created from parametric down-conversion. By using a large variety of scattering optical systems we have experimentally obtained entangled mixed states that lie upon and below the Werner curve in the linear entropy-tangle plane. We have also introduced a simple phenomenological model built on the analogy between classical polarization optics and quantum maps. Theoretical predictions from such a model are in full agreement with our experimental findings.

Characterization of two-photon polarization mixed states generated from entangled-classical hybrid photon source

H. Kumano, Ken-ichi Matsuda, S. Ekuni +2 more

We experimentally prepare bi-photon mixed states in polarization employing an entangled-classical hybrid photon emitter which can properly model solid-state entangled photon sources with uncorrelated background photons. Polarization-uncorrelated photon pairs in totally mixed (TM) states are embodied with classical thermal radiation, while the polarization-entangled ones in a Bell state are generated by conventional parametric down conversion. The bi-photon states generated from the hybrid photon emitter are characterized in terms of a linear entropy-tangle plane, which reveals the formation of two-qubit Werner states. We also propose a direct way for evaluating the Werner states by means of minimal coincidence counts measurements. This simple method can be widely applicable in examining the bi-photon states from solid-state entangled photon sources, in which the polarization-entangled photon pairs have temporal correlation while the background photons in the TM states do not.

Experimental preparation and manipulation of quantum entangled states

This paper presents our experimental work on preparing and manipulating quantum entangled states in optical quantum information processing systems. The main contents are: (1) Using continuous wave(CW) laser beam to pump nonlinear crystals we successfully prepared two-photon polarization entangled states with high brightness and entanglement degree, and it is tunable in entanglement degree and we use this source to produce one kind of important mixed states——Werner states with tunable entanglement fraction in it. (2) We realized the 1→2 qubits Buek-Hillery cloning machine with linear optical devices and showed that the fidelities between the two output qubits and the original qubit are both 5/6 for arbitrary input pure states. (3) We presented a method to test the maximal violation of the CHSH inequality for non-maximally entangled pure states and experimentally realized it with our entangled state source. (4) We perform an all-or-nothing-type Kochen-Specker experiment to verify whether non-contextual hidden variables (NCHV) or quantum mechanics is right. The results strongly agree with quantum mechanics.
