Abstract

One of the significant breakthroughs in quantum computation is Grover’s algorithm for unsorted database search. Recently, the applications of Grover’s algorithm to solve global optimization problems have been demonstrated, where unknown optimum solutions are found by iteratively improving the threshold value for the selective phase shift operator in Grover rotation. In this paper, a hybrid approach that combines continuous-time quantum walks with Grover search is proposed. By taking advantage of quantum tunneling effect, local barriers are overcome and better threshold values can be found at the early stage of search process. The new algorithm based on the formalism is demonstrated with benchmark examples of global optimization. The results between the new algorithm and the Grover search method are also compared.

Data Search Algorithms based on Quantum Walk

Masataka Fujisaki, Hiromi Miyajima, Noritaka Shigei

For searching any item in an unsorted database with N items, a classical computer takes O(N) steps but Grover’s quantum searching algorithm takes only O( √ N) steps. However, it is also known that Grover’s algorithm is effective only in the case where the initial amplitude distribution of dataset is uniform, but is not always effective in the nonuniform case. In this paper, we propose some quantum search algorithms. First, we propose an algorithm in analog time based on quantum walk by solving the schrodinger equation. The proposed algorithm shows best performance in optimum time. Next, we will apply the result to Grover search algorithm. It is shown that the proposed algorithm shows better performance than the conventional one. Further, we propose the improved algorithm by introducing the idea of the phase rotation. The algorithm shows best performance compared with the conventional ones.

A Quantum Global Optimization Algorithm: Application to the Knapsack Problem

Mohamed Yassine Cherif, Wided Lejouad Chaari, Olfa Belkahla Driss

Abstract Solving combinatorial optimization problems represents a challenge for researchers, especially hard NP-complete problems that are commonly handled through heuristic methods providing approximate solutions. The emergence of quantum computing, which enables performing parallel computation, raises hope for solving such problems within a reasonable time frame. This paper proposes a quantum global optimization algorithm for solving combinatorial optimization problems with improved performance and runtime approaching Grover’s optimal time of quantum search. The algorithm determines the global optimum of the objective function defining the addressed problem using an enhanced application of Grover’s search by simultaneously exploring all comparison cases of possible solutions without requiring iterative operations, unlike previous approaches, which affect performance and runtime. The paper also introduces a version of the proposed algorithm for solving the knapsack problem, along with its execution results and a comparison with other competing algorithms.

Improved Grover’s Searching Algorithm for Efficient Routing Design in MANETS

V. Rekha, J. Nandhini, M. Subahanal Nuzrath

In Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs), routing protocols directly affect various indices of network Quality of Service (QoS), so they play an important role in network performance. To address the drawbacks associated with traditional routing protocols in MANETs, such as poor anti-fading performance and slow convergence rate, for basic Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), propose a new routing model based on improved Grover’s searching algorithm. In this paper, a hybrid approach that combines quantum walks with Grover search is proposed so that the search is accelerated and optimum is found with fewer numbers of iterations. By taking advantage of quantum tunneling effect, local barriers are overcome and better threshold values can be found, especially at the early stage of search process. The new algorithm based on the formalism of continuous-time quantum walk is demonstrated. With this new routing model, each node maintains a node vector function, and all the nodes can obtain a node probability vector using improved Grover’s algorithm, and then select an optimal routing according to node probability. Simulation results show that compared with DSR, this new routing protocol can effectively extend the network lifetime, as well as reduce the network delay and the number of routing hops. The results between the new algorithm and the state-of-the-art Grover search method are also compared.

Quantum-Inspired Random Walk Algorithms for Optimization

Jincheng Zhang

This paper investigates the application of quantum-inspired concepts to enhance the performance of random walk algorithms for optimization problems. Classical random walk algorithms are susceptible to getting trapped in local optima, limiting their efficacy in tackling complex and high-dimensional search spaces. To address this limitation, we propose a novel approach that incorporates principles of quantum superposition and tunneling into the random walk process. The algorithm leverages these concepts to enable more extensive exploration of the search space, thereby increasing the probability of converging towards the global optimum. We present a detailed formulation of the algorithm, outlining the key parameters and their influence on the optimization process. The theoretical analysis demonstrates the potential advantages of this quantum-inspired approach compared to traditional random walk methods. The algorithm's ability to escape local minima is evaluated through simulations, showcasing its effectiveness in a variety of benchmark optimization problems. The results highlight the promise of quantum-inspired techniques in improving the robustness and efficiency of random walk algorithms, offering a viable strategy for solving challenging optimization tasks.

Quantum walk search algorithm based on phase matching and circuit cmplementation

Hanwu Chen, Ke Li, Shengmei Zhao

As a new quantum computing model, quantum walk has been widely studied in recent years. It consists of discrete time quantum walk and continuous time quantum walk. Discrete time quantum walk includes coin quantum walk and scattering quantum walk. Meanwhile as a quantum search algorithm, Grover algorithm can search an unsorted database in time complexity of O(√N) . Recent years quantum walk has been used to solve search problems and some of them have been proved to be as efficient as Grover algorithm. Making full use of the novel properties of quantum walk, the quantum walk search algorithms on the 2D grid and hypercube have been proposed. Inspired by phase matching condition of Grover algorithm, we propose a new quantum walk search algorithm which is based on coin quantum walk. Firstly we give the graph to the quantum walk, and then describe the algorithm in detail. Algorithm uses different coin operators and shift operators for two different cases and draws the corresponding iteration operators. Then we prove that iteration operators used in the algorithm are unitary operators. Then we analyze the time complexity and probability of success of the algorithm. Analysis indicates that the time complexity of the algorithm is the same as that of Grover algorithm, however when the targets to be searched are more than 1/3 of the total targets, the algorithm probability of success is greater than that of Grover algorithm. Finally we give the circuit implementation of the algorithm.
