Abstract

By use of the measure, the backflow of information presented recently, we study the non-Markovianity of the dynamics for a two-level system interacting with a zero-temperature structured environment via amplitude-phase coupling. In the limit of weak coupling between the system and its reservoir, the time-local non-Markovian master equation for the reduced state of the system is derived. Under the secular approximation, the exact analytic solution is obtained. Numerical simulations show that the amplitude and phase dampings can produce destructive interference to the backflow of information, leading to the weaker non-Markovianity of the compound dynamics compared with the dynamics of a single amplitude or phase damping model. We also study the characteristics of the initial-state pairs that maximize the backflow of information.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a damped driven two-state system

Pinja Haikka, Sabrina Maniscalco

We study a driven two-state system interacting with a generic structured environment. We outline the derivation of the time-local microscopic non-Markovian master equation, in the limit of weak coupling between the system and the reservoir, and we derive its analytic solution for general reservoir spectra in the regime of validity of the secular approximation. We also consider the non-Markovian master equation without the secular approximation and study the effect of nonsecular terms on the system dynamics for two classes of reservoir spectra: the Ohmic and the Lorentzian reservoir. Finally, we derive the analytic conditions for complete positivity of the dynamical map, with and without the secular approximation. Interestingly, the complete positivity conditions have a transparent physical interpretation in terms of the characteristic time scales of phase diffusion and relaxation processes.

Non-Markovian master equation for a damped driven two-state system

P Haikka

We present a detailed microscopic derivation for a non-Markovian master equation for a driven two-state system interacting with a general structured reservoir. The master equation is derived using the time-convolutionless projection operator technique in the limit of weak coupling between the two-state quantum system and its environment. We briefly discuss the Markov approximation, the secular approximation and their validity.

Non-Markovianity through flow of information between a system and an environment

Soroush Haseli, Göktuğ Karpat, S. Salimi +6 more

Exchange of information between a quantum system and its surrounding environment plays a fundamental role in the study of the dynamics of open quantum systems. Here we discuss the role of the information exchange in the non-Markovian behavior of dynamical quantum processes following the decoherence approach, where we consider a quantum system that is initially correlated with its measurement apparatus, which in turn interacts with the environment. We introduce a way of looking at the information exchange between the system and environment using the quantum loss, which is shown to be closely related to the measure of non-Markovianity based on the quantum mutual information. We also extend the results of Fanchini et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 210402 (2014)] in several directions, providing a more detailed investigation of the use of the accessible information for quantifying the backflow of information from the environment to the system. Moreover, we reveal a clear conceptual relation between the entanglement- and mutual-information-based measures of non-Markovianity in terms of the quantum loss and accessible information. We compare different ways of studying the information flow in two theoretical examples. We also present experimental results on the investigation of the quantum loss and accessible information for a two-level system undergoing a zero temperature amplitude damping process. We use an optical approach that allows full access to the state of the environment.

Comparison between non-Markovian dynamics with and without rotating wave approximation

Ning Tang, Tian-Tian Xu, Hao‐Sheng Zeng

In the limit of weak coupling between a system and its reservoir, we derive the time-convolutionless (TCL) non-Markovian master equation for a two-level system interacting with a zero-temperature structured environment with no rotating wave approximation (NRWA). By comparing the dynamics with RWA, we demonstrate the impact of RWA on the system dynamics, as well as the effects of non-Markovianity on the preservation of atomic coherence, squeezing, and entanglement.

Exact non-Markovian master equation for a driven damped two-level system

H. Z. Shen, M. Qin, Xiao‐Ming Xiu +1 more

The driven two-level system is a useful model to describe many quantum objects, particularly in quantum information processing. However, the exact master equation for such a system has barely been explored. Making use of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory, we derive an exact non-Markovian master equation for the driven two-level system and show the lost feature in the perturbative treatment for this system. The perturbative treatment leads to the time-convolutionless (TCL) and Nakajima-Zwanzig (NZ) master equations. So to this end we derive the TCL and NZ master equations for the system and compare the dynamics given by the three master equations. We find the validity condition for the TCL and NZ master equations. Based on the exact non-Markovian master equation, we analyze the regime of validity for the secular approximation in the time-convolutionless master equation and discuss the leading corrections of the nonsecular terms to the quantum dynamics. Significant effects are found in the dynamics of the driven system.
