Abstract

We study theoretically and experimentally the strongly-coupled, nonlinear regime of a hot vapor of three-level atoms in an optical cavity. Interesting effects include lasing without inversion and polariton peak splittings.

Splitting of atom-cavity polariton peaks for three-level atoms in an optical cavity

Haibin Wu, Julio R. Gea-Banacloche, Min Xiao

We explore the high-density, nonlinear regime of atom-cavity coupling for a gas of three-level atoms at high temperature inside an optical cavity, interacting with the cavity field and a strong driving field. We find a region of parameters where the two side peaks in the transmission spectrum (which, in the linear regime, are associated with ``bright polaritons'') split into two pairs of peaks. Experimental results are presented along with a theoretical model that indicates that this phenomenon is unique to the three-level system in the large Doppler-broadening regime.

Nonlinear optical effects in N-type four-level atom-cavity systems

Jiteng Sheng, Min Xiao

We experimentally study the nonlinear optical behaviors of N-type four-level atomic systems inside an optical cavity. These nonlinear effects include two-photon absorption, splitting of dark polariton, modified self-Kerr nonlinearity, Raman amplification, and white-light cavity.

Observation of Lasing without Inversion in a Doppler-broaden Atomic Medium

Haibin Wu, Julio R. Gea-Banacloche, Min Xiao

Lasing without population inversion has been experimentally observed in a system with three-level rubidium atoms inside an optical ring cavity. The gain and lasing peaks can be controlled by the pumping power and atomic density.

Novel fluorescent spectra from an atom strongly coupled to a driven cavity

Craig M. Savage

Recently there has been both theoretical [1-3] and experimental [4] interest in atoms strongly coupled to single mode optical cavities. Strong coupling means that the energy level splitting due to a single quantum of excitation is comparable to the dissipative linewidth of the system. Single quantum frequency splitting has been observed for as few as 20 atoms strongly coupled to a cavity [4].
