Multitree decoding and multitree-aided LDPC decoding

Abstract

New decoding algorithms for linear codes are proposed. The first part of the paper considers decoding general binary linear codes by searching multiple trees, which is shown to achieve near maximum-likelihood performance for short block lengths. The second part of the paper considers decoding low-density parity check (ldpc) codes by means of repeated decoding attempts by standard sum-product message passing. Each decoding attempt starts from modified channel output, where some of the bits are clamped to a fixed value. The values of the fixed bits are obtained from multitree search.

improve the standard sum-product decoder for low-density parity check codes. When the sum-product decoder fails to find a codeword, a tree search is used to decode a subset of bits. The channel messages for these bits are then replaced by the decisions found in the tree search in an additional sum-product decoding attempt. This can be repeated multiple times for different subsets of bits. The resulting decoder significantly outperforms the sum-product decoder.

Nonlinear programming approaches to decoding low-density parity-check codes

Kai Yang, J. Feldman, Xiaodong Wang

We consider the decoding problem for low-density parity-check codes, and apply nonlinear programming methods. This extends previous work using linear programming (LP) to decode linear block codes. First, a multistage LP decoder based on the branch-and-bound method is proposed. This decoder makes use of the maximum-likelihood-certificate property of the LP decoder to refine the results when an error is reported. Second, we transform the original LP decoding formulation into a box-constrained quadratic programming form. Efficient linear-time parallel and serial decoding algorithms are proposed and their convergence properties are investigated. Extensive simulation studies are performed to assess the performance of the proposed decoders. It is seen that the proposed multistage LP decoder outperforms the conventional sum-product (SP) decoder considerably for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with short to medium block length. The proposed box-constrained quadratic programming decoder has less complexity than the SP decoder and yields much better performance for LDPC codes with regular structure

Multistep linear programming approaches for decoding low-density parity-check codes

Haiyang Liu, Lianrong Ma, Jie Chen

The problem of improving the performance of linear programming (LP) decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is considered in this paper. A multistep linear programming (MLP) algorithm was developed for decoding LDPC codes that includes a slight increase in computational complexity. The MLP decoder adaptively adds new constraints which are compatible with a selected check node to refine the results when an error is reported by the original LP decoder. The MLP decoder result is shown to have the maximum-likelihood (ML) certificate property. Simulations with moderate block length LOpe codes suggest that the M LP decoder gives better performance than both the original LP decoder and the conventional sum-product (SP) decoder.

Techniques for the decoding of low density parity check codes: efficient simulation, algorithm improvement and implementation

Babak Daneshrad, Enver Çavuş

After the introduction of iterative coding, Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes have received a lot of attention due to their remarkable near Shannon-limit performance and practical decoder implementation. However, when employing an LDPC code for various applications, multiple issues do arise at the simulation, algorithm and implementation levels. The first issue is the performance evaluation of the iterative LDPC decoder in the very low Bit Error Rate (BER) regions. So far, no analytical tool has been developed to evaluate the performance of LDPC codes. Unfortunately standard Monte Carlo (MC) simulations cannot be used for performance estimation in these low BER regions due to prohibitive execution times. The second issue is the efficiency of the decoding algorithm. Due to the presence of short cycles in the bipartite graph, sum-product decoding algorithms lead to considerable performance loss for short block-length LDPC codes and produce error floors for longer codes. In addition, the iterative processing and estimation of soft probabilistic values with these algorithms result in very high computational complexity, which in turn impedes the adoption of LDPC codes for power constrained systems. Another prime objective is to design a high throughput decoder architecture which is capable of supporting multiple rates and variable code lengths within minimal area. This work aims to address and provide solutions to the above problems. As a solution to the performance estimation problem of LDPC codes, a highly efficient and novel fast BER simulation technique is developed. At the algorithm level, a performance improvement and error floor avoidance method is introduced, and a computationally efficient algorithm is developed for the sum-product decoding of LDPC codes. And finally, at the architecture level, a high throughput multi-rate variable code length implementation is presented which, when implemented, efficiently minimizes device resources while alleviating the routing complexity of the decoder.

Extended optimum decoding for LDPC codes based on exhaustive tree search algorithm

Li Yang, Martin Tomlinson, Marcel Ambroze +1 more

A maximum-likelihood decoding algorithm inspired by information set decoding is realised for LDPC codes or linear block codes with sparse parity-check matrices of moderate codeword lengths over the AWGN channel. The extension involves an exhaustive branch and bound tree-search based algorithm for finding all small Euclidean distance error vectors. It provides an approach of searching on the bounded n-bit positions, which involves 2kcombinatorial dual codes based on the corresponding parity-check matrix, to achieve the near-optimum decoding output with attainable computational complexity. Soft decision decoding results are presented for some well-known LDPC codes demonstrating near-optimum maximum-likelihood performance.

Memory-Efficient Sum–Product Decoding of LDPC Codes

H. Sankar, Krishna R. Narayanan

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes perform very close to capacity for long lengths on several channels. However, the amount of memory (fixed-point numbers that need to be stored) required for implementing the message-passing algorithm increases linearly as the number of edges in the graph increases. In this letter, we propose a decoding algorithm for decoding LDPC codes that reduces the memory requirement at the decoder. The proposed decoding algorithm can be analyzed using density evolution; further, we show how to design good LDPC codes using this. Results show that this algorithm provides almost the same performance as the conventional sum-product decoding of LDPC codes.
