Abstract

We demonstrate the transfer of information encoded as orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of a light beam. The transmitter and receiver units are based on spatial light modulators, which prepare or measure a laser beam in one of eight pure OAM states. We show that the information encoded in this way is resistant to eavesdropping in the sense that any attempt to sample the beam away from its axis will be subject to an angular restriction and a lateral offset, both of which result in inherent uncertainty in the measurement. This gives an experimental insight into the effects of aperturing and misalignment of the beam on the OAM measurement and demonstrates the uncertainty relationship for OAM.

The beam with orbital angular momentum is a present domestic and foreign research key direction. Its application and development will bring the profound influence in the optical communications field. At the same time, light's orbital angular momentum promises potential applications in both classical and quantum optical communication. The research progress of the beam with orbital angular momentum and encoding information as light's OAM for free-space optical communication were reviewed in this article, the existing design method, mechanism and description methods of encoding information as light's OAM were discussed. In quantum communication, qudits can be encoded in photons using their OAM for creating high-dimensional entanglement based on entangled photon pairs from SPDC. In this paper, light's OAM is used as information carrier for classical and quantum communication, which is promising to ensures the security of atmospheric laser communication, improves the density and precision of information transmission. It is apparent that an efficient way to measure the orbital angular momentum of individual photons and light beams with good efficiency would be of potentially great importance for optical communications and quantum information. In view of the above, the measurements of orbital angular momentum of individual photons and light beams are analyzed and discussed in detail.

Light beams with orbital angular momentum for free space optics

Jingzhi Wu, 李仰军

The light's orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a consequence of the spiral flow of the electromagnetic energy. In this paper, an analysis of light beams with OAM used for free space optics (FSO) is conducted. The basic description and conception of light's OAM are reviewed. Both encoding information into OAM states of single light beam and encoding information into spatial structure of the mixed optical vortex with OAM are discussed, and feasibility to improve the FSO's performance of security and obstruction of line of sight is examined.

Encoding information as orbital angular momentum states of light for wireless optical communications

Jingzhi Wu, Hui Li, Yangjun Li

The issues of security and obstruction of line of sight are concerns of wireless optical communications (WOC). In this paper, an analysis of light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) used for WOC is undertaken. The basic description and conception of OAM of light are given. Encoding information both as the OAM states of a single light beam and as the spatial structure of the mixed light beams with OAM is discussed and compared. Using OAM to encode the data offers an inherent security enhancement. Mixed vortex fields with OAM possess a self-reconstruction property that is able to regenerate and to reconstruct their initial spatial distributions of the complex amplitude in the condition of obstruction of line of sight.

Single Photon Orbital Angular Momentum Transfer Based on Information Processing Technology

Hongyu Lin, Xiaoqian Wang, Zhihai Yao

Abstract The orbital angular momentum state (OAM) of the photon can be theoretically evaluated from minus infinity to infinity, and the different orbital angular momentum states are orthogonal to each other. Therefore, in recent years, it has attracted wide attention from the academic circle and the industry. The purpose of this paper is to study the characteristics of single photon orbital angular momentum transfer based on information processing technology and to provide Suggestions for its technical optimization. Based on the characteristics of the angular momentum state of photon orbit, this paper studies its application and related problems in information processing and transmission. In this paper, quantum multiuser communication technology is studied, and a multiuser communication scheme based on photon orbital angular momentum state is proposed. The scheme takes advantage of the orthogonality of different orbital angular momentum states of the photon and assumes that the sender and receiver share a pair of entangled orbital angular momentum states. On this basis, the spatial light modulator is used to modulate it to the entangled photon of the sender, so that the sending photon carries all the user’s information at the same time. Finally, the receiver accurately extracts the information of each sender by measuring the coincidence count and according to the specific receiving rules. Numerical simulation and experimental results show that the coincidence rate of different coding schemes is between 0 and 0.66, which proves the feasibility of the scheme.

Quantum communication coding based on orbital angular momentum of light

The nondiffracting higher-order Bessel beams carry the orbital angular momentum(OAM). During free propagation, their transverse intensity profile remains nearly invariant in a range. The beam comprises the topological charge l helical phasefronts and carries an orbital angular momentum of lh per photon. The angular momentum number carried by the photon in each eigenmode is represented by l, and the eigenstates |l〉can generate multidimensional quantum entangled states.A method of optical communication is presented that encodes information in two orthogonal orbital angular momentum states based on higher-order Bessel beams. Each photon carries OAM states of information, which can increase the key generation rate of the protocol, and offer a quantum solution for increase of the optical communication distance.

Measuring the orbital angular momentum of light

Miles J. Padgett, Martin P. J. Lavery, Gregorius C. G. Berkhout +2 more

We report a new simple optical system for the highly efficient measurement of the Orbital Angular Momentum States of Light. It uses an image reformatter to map each input state onto a different lateral position in the output aperture. This, near perfect, separation of states potentially makes available the high information capacity of OAM in both classical and quantum applications.
