Abstract

We report on the fabrication and properties of high current density NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions for the application of superconducting SIS mixers in the submillimeter wave regions. Junctions having current densities as high as 50 kA/cm/sup 2/ exhibited a good Josephson tunneling behaviour, excellent terahertz response, and sensitive heterodyne mixing properties. Accurate values of junction capacitance were estimated by measuring dc-SQUID resonant steps for the design of tuning circuits. The measured specific capacitance gives values in the range of 20-200 fF//spl mu/m/sup 2/ for the current density range of 1-100 kA/cm/sup 2/. The NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions were integrated with a NbN thin film antenna to investigate the terahertz responses and mixing tests in a quasi-optical testing system. Photon-assisted tunneling steps were clearly observed on the I-V curve with irradiation up to 1.02 THz, and a low-noise heterodyne mixing was demonstrated in the 300-GHz band.

Quasi-optical submillimeter-wave SIS mixers with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions

Yoshinori Uzawa, Zhen Wang, Akira Kawakami

We report on low-noise heterodyne mixing with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions in the submillimeter-wave region for the first time. The receiver consists of the quasi-optical NbN SIS mixer with an integrated tuning circuit in which a radial short stub tuner is incorporated to resonate out the junction capacitance for RF matching and a balanced IF circuit for broadband IF matching. The prepared NbN SIS junction has a current density of 20 kA/cm 2 and is about 1 I1111 in diameter, supplying a small coC JRN product (o)CJRN = 3 at 300 GHz). The junctions showed good dc I-V characteristics, excellent submillimeter-wave responses and sensitive heterodyne mixing responses. From 254 to 350 GHz the average receiver noise temperature measured using by the standard Y-factor method was about 250 K (DSB) at 5 K. The lowest receiver noise temperature, 200 K (DSB), was obtained at around 303 GHz. Comparing NbN/A1N/NbN and Nb/A10x/Nb tunnel junction performance with the same tuning circuit showed that the frequency dependence of the receiver noise temperature agreed well in the two receivers. These results suggest that our well-controlled NbN SIS junctions can be used for terahertz mixer elements instead of Nb SIS junctions.

Quasi-optical submillimeter-wave mixers with NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions

Yoshinori Uzawa, Zhen Wang, Akira Kawakami

We demonstrate low-noise heterodyne mixing with NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions in the submillimeter-wave region. The prepared junction size was 1 μm in diameter and the current density was about 20 kA/cm2, supplying a small ωCJRN product (ωCJRN=3 at 300 GHz). The mixer used a lens-coupled log-period antenna and an integrated tuning circuit which incorporated a radial short stub tuner for resonating out the junction capacitance. The junctions showed good dc I–V characteristics, excellent submillimeter-wave responses and sensitive heterodyne mixing responses. From 254 to 350 GHz the average receiver noise temperature measured using the standard Y-factor method was about 250 K double sideband (DSB). The lowest receiver noise temperature, 200 K (DSB), was obtained around 303 GHz.

Quasi-optical NbN/AlN/NbN mixers in submillimeter wave band

Yoshinori Uzawa, Z. Wang, Akira Kawakami

We have designed, fabricated and evaluated a quasi-optical SIS receiver with NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions in the submillimeter-wave region. The receiver consists of a planar self-complementary log-periodic antenna and MgO hyperhemispherical lens with an anti-reflection cap for RF optics, NbN SIS junctions and a radial short stub tuner to resonate out its capacitance for RF matching. The prepared NbN SIS junction has a current density of 20 kA/cm/sup 2/ and is about 1 /spl mu/m in diameter, supplying a small /spl omega/C/sub J/R/sub N/ product (/spl omega/C/sub J/R/sub N/=3 at 300 GHz). From 297 to 356 GHz the average double sideband (DSB) receiver noise temperature measured by using the standard Y-factor method was about 200 K. The lowest receiver noise temperature, 167 K (DSB), was obtained at around 303 GHz. These results suggest that our NbN SIS junctions can be used for terahertz mixer elements instead of Nb SIS junctions.

Performance of NbN superconductive tunnel junctions as SIS mixers at 205 GHz

William R. McGrath, J. A. Stern, Hamid Javadi +3 more

Small area (<or=1- mu m/sup 2/), high-current-density NbN-MgO-NbN tunnel junctions with I-V characteristics suitable for high-frequency mixers have been fabricated. Mesa-geometry junctions with an area of about 1 mu m/sup 2/ and critical current density of 5-10 kA/cm/sup 2/ are integrated with superconducting microstrip lines designed to resonate out the junction capacitance. Accurate values of junction capacitance and magnetic penetration depth are required for the proper design of the microstrip. A study was made of the mixer gain and noise performance near 205 GHz as a function of the inductance provided by the microstrip line. This has confirmed, at a high millimeter-wave frequency, values of junction capacitance of 85 fF/ mu m/sup 2/ and recently measured values of a magnetic penetration depth of 380 nm. Mixer noise temperatures as low as 134 K at 1.5 K have been obtained for properly tuned junctions. A significant improvement in mixer performance on cooling from 4.2 K to 1.5 K was observed. Edge-geometry junctions with an area of 0.3 mu m/sup 3/ and critical current density of 18-25 kA/cm/sup 2/ have also been fabricated. These junctions give a mixer noise temperature of 145 K at 4.2 K without the use of integrated tuning elements. These are the best results ever achieved for NbN-based SIS mixers.

0.5-THz waveguide SIS mixers with NbN/AlN/NbN technology

Jing Li, Masanori Takeda, Zhen Wang +1 more

Heterodyne mixers based on superconducting SIS (superconductor-insulator-superconductor) tunnel junctions have been demonstrated to be the most sensitive coherent detectors at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. In fact, conventional superconducting SIS mixers with Nb/AlOx/Nb junction and Nb/SiO2/Nb tuning circuit have shown good performances with the noise temperature reaching as low as three times the quantum limit below 0.7THz, which is the gap frequency of Nb-based SIS junctions. However, due to the large loss in Nb thin-film superconducting microstrip lines, the noise performance of Nb SIS mixers deteriorates significantly above 0.7THz. With a gap frequency double that of Nb-based SIS junctions, NbN-based SIS junctions are of particular interest for the development of heterodyne mixers in the terahertz region. Considering the bandwidth and output power of local-oscillator (LO) signal sources are quite limited around 1THz, we firstly develop a waveguide NbN-based SIS mixer at 0.5THz. Three types of SIS junctions, i.e., long junction, parallel-connected tunnel junction (PCTJ) and distributed junction array (DJ) are investigated. They are all comprised of NbN-AlN-NbN tri-layer fabricated on an MgO substrate and have the same current density (Jc) of 10kA/cm2. In this paper, we describe their design, fabrication and preliminary experimental results.

Very high-current-density Nb/AlN/Nb tunnel junctions for low-noise submillimeter mixers

Jonathan H. Kawamura, David Miller, Jian Chen +4 more

We have fabricated and tested submillimeter-wave superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) mixers using very high-current-density Nb/AlN/Nb tunnel junctions (Jc≈30 kA cm−2). The junctions have low-resistance-area products (RNA≈5.6 Ω μm2), good subgap-to-normal resistance ratios Rsg/RN≈10, and good run-to-run reproducibility. From Fourier transform spectrometer measurements, we infer that ωRNC=1 at 270 GHz. This is a factor of 2.5 improvement over what is generally available with Nb/AlOx/Nb junctions suitable for low-noise mixers. The AlN-barrier junctions are indeed capable of low-noise operation: we measure an uncorrected double-sideband receiver noise temperature of TRX=110 K at 533 GHz for an unoptimized device. In addition to providing wider bandwidth operation at lower frequencies, the AlN-barrier junctions will considerably improve the performance of THz SIS mixers by reducing rf loss in the tuning circuits.
