A star-graph model via operator extension

Abstract

Abstract One usually assumes that the Schrödinger operator on a thin quantum network (“fattened graph”) can be simulated by the ordinary Schrödinger operator on the corresponding one-dimensional quantum graph. On the other hand, each quantum graph can be constructed of standard elements – star graphs. We prove that a thin star-shaped quantum network which consists of a compact domain and a few straight semi-infinite quantum wires, with a two-dimensional Schrödinger operator on it, can be simulated by the corresponding solvable model in form of a one-dimensional star graph: an outer space, with an ordinary Schrödinger operator on the leads, a resonance vertex supplied with an inner space and a finite matrix in it and an appropriate boundary condition connecting the inner and outer components of elements from the domain of the model. The model is (locally) quantitatively consistent: the scattering matrix of the model on a certain spectral interval serves an approximation of the scattering matrix of the network. The role of the constructed star-graph model as a “jump-start” in analytic perturbation procedure on continuous spectrum is discussed.

Non-Hermitian Star-shaped Quantum Graphs

Miloslav Znojil

A compact review is given, and a few new numerical results are added to the recent studies of the q-pointed one-dimensional star-shaped quantum graphs. These graphs are assumed endowedwith certain specific, manifestly non-Hermitian point interactions, localized either in the inner vertex or in all of the outer vertices and carrying, in the latter case, an interesting zero-inflow interpretation.

We describe the boundary conditions at the vertex that one must choose to obtain a dynamical system that best describes the low-energy part of the evolution of a quantum system confined to a very small neighbourhood of a star-shaped metric graph.

The Green function for simplest quantum graphs

K.K. Sabirov, U. A. Aminov, Kh.Sh. Saparov +2 more

We treat the problem of the Green function for quantum graphs by focusing on such topologies as star and tree graphs. The exact Green function for the Schrödinger equation on primary star graphs is derived in the form of 3 × 3-matrix using the vertex boundary conditions providing continuity and current conservation.Extension of the approach for the derivation for the Green function on tree graph is presented.Possible practical applications of the obtained results are discussed.

Quantum star-graph analogues of PT-symmetric square wells

Miloslav Znojil

We recall the solvable [Formula: see text]-symmetric quantum square well on an interval of x ∈ (–L, L) := [Formula: see text] (with an α-dependent non-Hermiticity given by Robin boundary conditions) and generalize it. In essence, we just replace the support interval [Formula: see text] (reinterpreted as an equilateral two-pointed star graph with Kirchhoff matching at the vertex x = 0) with a q-pointed equilateral star graph [Formula: see text] endowed with the simplest complex-rotation-symmetric external α-dependent Robin boundary conditions. The remarkably compact form of the secular determinant is then deduced. Its analysis reveals that (i) at any integer q = 2, 3, …, there exists the same q-independent and infinite subfamily of the real energies, and (ii) at any special q = 2, 6, 10, …, there exists another, additional, q-dependent infinite subfamily of the real energies. In the spirit of the recently proposed dynamical construction of the Hilbert space of a quantum system, the physical bound-state interpretation of these eigenvalues is finally proposed.

QUANTUM NETWORKS MODELLED BY GRAPHS

Pavel Exner, Olaf Post

Abstract. Quantum networks are often modelled using Schrödinger operators on metric graphs. To give meaning to such models one has to know how to interpret the boundary conditions which match the wave functions at the graph vertices. In this article we give a survey, technically not too heavy, of several recent results which serve this purpose. Specifically, we consider approximations by means of “fat graphs ” — in other words, suitable families of shrinking manifolds — and discuss convergence of the spectra and resonances in such a setting. 1.
