Ground-state properties of the spin-1 two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder are investigated precisely by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that the correlation length along the chains and the spin gap both remain finite regardless of the strength of interchain coupling, i.e., the Haldane state and the spin-1 dimer state are connected smoothly without any quantum phase transitions between them. We propose a plaquette-singlet solid state, which qualitatively describes the ground state of the spin-1 ladder quite well, and also a corresponding topological hidden order parameter. It is shown numerically that the proposed hidden order parameter remains finite up to the dimer limit, though the conventional string order defined on each chain vanishes immediately when infinitesimal interchain coupling is introduced.
The frustrated ladder with alternate ferromagnetic(F) exchange
−JF and AF exchange
JA to first neighbors and F exchange
−JL to second neighbors is studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations in systems of
2N spins-1/2 with periodic boundary conditions. The ground state is a singlet
(S=0) and the singlet-triplet gap
εT is finite for the exchanges considered. Spin-1/2 string correlation functions
g1(N) and
g2(N) are defined for an even number
N of consecutive spins in systems with two spins per unit cell; the ladder has string order
g2(∞)>0 and
g1(∞)=0. The minimum
N∗ of
g2(N) is related to the range of ground-state spin correlations. Convergence to
g2(∞) is from below, and
g1(N) decreases exponentially for
N≥N∗. Singlet valence bond (VB) diagrams account for the size dependencies. The frustrated ladder at special values of
JF,
JL and
JA reduces to well-known models such as the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and the
J1−J2 model, among others. Numerical analysis of ladders matches previous results for spin-1 gaps or string correlation functions and extends them to spin-1/2 systems. The nondegenerate singlet ground state of ladder is a bond-order wave, a Kekulé VB diagrams at
JL=JF/2≤JA, that is reversed on interchanging
−JF and
JA. Inversion symmetry is spontaneously broken in the dimer phase of the
J1−J2 model where the Kekulé diagrams are the doubly degenerate ground states at
J2/J1=1/2.
Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we determine the phase diagram of a frustrated bond-alternating S = 1/2 Heisenberg ladder with ferro-antiferromagnetic couplings at zero temperature. With the interactions between spins along the rungs set, we identify three spin-gapped phases (the Haldane phase, the singlet phase and the dimer phase) in the whole parameter range. The analysis of our data shows that two-leg spin bond-alternating ladders have a rich phase diagram if both rung and diagonal couplings are taken into account.

We introduce a class of models defined on ladders with a diagonal structure generated by
np plaquettes. The case
np=1 corresponds to the necklace ladder and has remarkable properties that are studied using density matrix renormalization-group and recurrent variational ansatzes. The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg (AFH) model on this ladder is equivalent to the alternating spin-1/spin-
21 AFH chain, which is known to have a ferromagnetic ground state (GS). For doping 1/3 the GS is a fully doped (1,1) stripe with the holes located mostly along the principal diagonal while the minor diagonals are occupied by spin singlets. This state can be seen as a Mott insulator of localized Cooper pairs on the plaquettes. A physical picture of our results is provided by a ${t}_{p}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{p}\ensuremath{-}{t}_{d}$ model of plaquettes coupled diagonally with a hopping parameter
td. In the limit ${t}_{d}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ we recover the original $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model on the necklace ladder while for a weak hopping parameter the model is easily solvable. The GS in the strong hopping regime is essentially an ``on link'' Gutzwiller projection of the weak hopping GS. We generalize the ${t}_{p}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{p}\ensuremath{-}{t}_{d}$ model to diagonal ladders with
np>1 and the two-dimensional square lattice. We use in our construction concepts familiar in statistical mechanics such as medial graphs and Bratelli diagrams.
The ground-state phase diagram of a Heisenberg $\text{spin}\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}$ system on a two-leg ladder with rung alternation is studied by combining analytical approaches with numerical simulations. For the case of ferromagnetic leg exchanges a unique ferrimagnetic ground state emerges, whereas for the case of antiferromagnetic leg exchanges several different ground states are stabilized depending on the ratio between exchanges along legs and rungs. For the more general case of a honeycomb-ladder model for the case of ferromagnetic leg exchanges besides the usual rung-singlet and saturated ferromagnetic states we obtain a ferrimagnetic Luttinger liquid phase with both linear and quadratic low-energy dispersions and ground-state magnetization continuously changing with system parameters. For the case of antiferromagnetic exchanges along legs, different dimerized states including states with additional topological order are suggested to be realized.
