Abstract

It is found that a new type of stimulated light scattering by ultrasonic vibrations may occur in the course of optically induced exothermic reactions in thermodynamically nonequilibrium media. These vibrations are excited as a result of inhomogeneous heat release caused by an inhomogeneous optical intensity distribution. An analysis is made of the main characteristics of this type of scattering and estimates are made of the gain of the scattered light wave.

Generation of stimulated noncoherent radiation in light-scattering media exhibiting chemical reactions

I. A. Izmaǐlov, V. A. Kochelap, L Yu Mel'nikov

It is proposed that a feedback resulting from scattering be used to achieve lasing in a disperse reactive medium. The example of a simple two-level system shows that under advanced lasing conditions the quantum efficiency of the radiation emission approaches the quantum efficiency of the excitation of the upper level, and the emission spectrum becomes much narrower. Feasibility of chemical pumping of such a laser is estimated on the basis of calculations of heterophase burning of a drop of a fuel in an oxidizing atmosphere. The growth increment of light is calculated and the threshold conditions for the excitation of lasing are found. Examples are given to illustrate the feasibility of purely chemical pumping of a laser with a nonresonant feedback. It is shown that dense reactive media can be used in such lasers.

Stimulated Raman scattering in resonant nonequilibrium media

Oleg Kh Khasanov

An analysis is made of the propagation of a short coherent optical pulse in a three-level resonant medium with an essentially nonequidistant spectrum as a function of the degree of preexcitation of the medium. It is found that in addition to self-induced transparency and resonance scattering, stimulated Raman scattering (Stokes or anti-Stokes) should be observed under certain spatial phase-matching conditions. The area theorem is formulated for all radiation components. An analysis is made of the case of propagation of a resonant electromagnetic pulse of frequency ω in a system of three-level atoms having an equidistant spectrum. Under conditions of preexcitation of the medium at the frequency 2ω by longitudinal acoustic pulses, a scattered transverse acoustic wave at the frequency ω may be observed.

Propagation of an optical pulse in a resonant nonequilibrium medium

V. R. Nagibarov, I. A. Nagibarova, N. K. Solovarov +1 more

An analysis is made of the evolution of a light pulse in a two-level resonant medium as a function of the degree of preliminary excitation by another pulse. It is shown that, in addition to self-induced transparancy observed under certain conditions associated with the degree of excitation of the atomic system, resonance scattering is also found due to the existence of macroscopic polarization of the medium. This scattering is not observed when the medium is in a noncoherent state. The transverse reversible relaxation time T * 2 can be determined from the variation of the scattering intensity.

Mechanisms of diffraction of light by optically induced gratings in absorbing media

Pavel A Apanasevich, Anatolii A Afanas'ev, А. И. Урбанович

A theoretical analysis is made of the transformation of light waves by optically induced amplitude-phase gratings of different order in a saturable absorbing medium. Allowance is made for gratings appearing; due to the absorption saturation and inhomogeneous heating of the medium. It is shown that, under certain conditions, the higher-order gratings may play a considerable role in the diffraction process. The contributions made by multistage and direct mechanisms to the n-th order diffraction are calculated. Estimates are obtained of the conditions which must be satisfied by the intensity and duration of radiation pulses, as well as by the optical properties and thickness of the absorbing medium, for these contributions to be comparable.

Self-diffraction and stimulated Brillouin scattering of opposite light waves in absorbing media

O. P. Zaskal'Ko, A. A. Zozulya, N. N. Panaioti +1 more

A study was made of the characteristics of self-diffraction of opposite optical waves in the case of a thermal mechanism of grating formation. The main factor limiting the self-diffraction efficiency was found to be a low-threshold absolute instability of the optical wave due to stimulated Brillouin scattering. The conditions were found under which the radiation generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering had a high spatial and temporal coherence.

Theory of stimulated scattering of nonmonochromatic radiation

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Michail G. Galushkin, O. I. Rechkin

A theory is developed of stimulated scattering of nonmonochromatic radiation whose spectral width is much greater than the spontaneous scattering line width or the frequency shift of the Stokes wave. It is shown that scattering of nonmonochromatic incident radiation under coherent conditions may take place as efficiently as for monochromatic pump radiation. The results apply to various types of stimulated scattering, in particular, to stimulated thermal scattering and stimulated scattering in media which are in thermodynamic nonequilibrium.
