Abstract

Photon propagation through 1D and 2D waveguide arrays has been explored for various applications in the fields of quantum optics and quantum information. In this paper, we show that an appropriately designed 1D waveguide array can mimic the photon propagation through a 2D array. This alternative design is enticing since fabrication of 1D arrays is relatively less burdensome than 2D arrays.

We theoretically analyse the propagation of photon pairs in two-dimensional (2D) photonic lattices by evaluating their photon number correlation. We support our results by classical intensity correlation experiments acting as a unbiased quantum simulator.

Photon pair generation in quadratic waveguide arrays: A classical optical simulation

Markus Gräfe, Alexander S. Solntsev, Robert Keil +5 more

This work reveals that linear propagation of classical light beams can be used to simulate the nonlinear effect of SPDC leading to photon pair generation and quantum random walks of the generated biphotons. In particular, the authors demonstrate that the quantum correlations of biphotons generated in a quadratically nonlinear 1D waveguide array can be mapped onto a linear beam propagation in specially designed 2D array of coupled optical waveguides. This analogy enables us to simulate, with classical light, the quantum coincidence counts for biphotons including the regime of breaking a 1D Bell like inequality as indicated by positve values of the non-classicality.

We analyze single-photon transport through a one-dimensional (1D) waveguide strongly coupled to a periodic array of two-level atoms. We demonstrate the possibility of achieving transparency without applying any coupling field.

Generation ofN-partite single and two photonWstates with enhanced tolerance using waveguide arrays

Surajit Paul, Krishnan Thyagarajan

Recently, integrated optic solutions for generating single photon N-partite W states by using a one-dimensional array of N identical single-mode optical waveguides, which are coupled via nearest-neighbour interaction, have been proposed. Due to the particular design of the proposed structure, the tolerances with respect to the length of the device and the input wavelength of the single photon for the generation of the W state are very critical, thus making an experimental realization troublesome. Here, we propose an alternative design of a waveguide array consisting of (2N-1) waveguides to create a single-photon N-partite W state that exhibits much greater tolerance to the fabrication conditions as well as to the input wavelength and hence is much more realizable experimentally. The same design is also shown to lead to the generation of two-photon W-states when using the post selection technique.

An elegant design of a waveguide array consisting of (2N-1) identical single mode optical waveguides is introduced to create ‘N’ partite two photon W state that illustrates much enhanced tolerance to the fabrication conditions and experimental perturbations.

By using a small rotation approach, we show that it is possible to obtain well behaved perturbed solutions for the amplitude of the electromagnetic field propagating in a photonic waveguide array.
