Abstract

We propose an improved belief-propagation (BP) decoder for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on channel information correction. We show that our algorithm achieves sizeable performance gains (in waterfall and error floor regions) compared to the standard BP decoder. We verify by examples that the proposed decoder almost achieves the maximum-likelihood decoding performance for short LDPC codes

Improvements in belief-propagation decoding based on averaging information from decoder and correction of clusters of nodes

Nedeljko Varnica, M.P.C. Fossorier

In this letter we provide several methods to improve belief-propagation (BP) decoding of low-density parity-check codes. The methods use additional processing of the decoded information during the decoding process and are grouped into two categories. The first category is useful in the waterfall performance region and is based on processing averaged information obtained from the decoder. Several choices of the feedback information utilized in additional processing are introduced. The second category is useful in the error-floor performance region and is based on fixing clusters of symbols simultaneously, again utilizing the information obtained by monitoring the decoder. We demonstrate on a code example that our methods achieve sizeable gains compared to the original BP decoder

Augmented Belief-Propagation Decoding of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

Nedeljko Varnica, M.P.C. Fossorier, A. Kavcic

We propose an augmented belief-propagation (BP) decoder for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes which can be used on memoryless or intersymbol-interference (ISI) channels. The proposed method is a heuristic algorithm that eliminates a large number of pseudocodewords that can cause nonconvergence in the BP decoder. The augmented decoder is a multistage iterative decoder, where at each stage, the original channel messages on select symbol nodes are replaced by saturated messages. The key element of the proposed method is the symbol-selection process, which is based on the appropriately defined subgraphs of the code graph and/or the reliability of the information received from the channel. We demonstrate by examples that this decoder can be implemented to achieve substantial gains (compared with the standard locally operating BP decoder) for short LDPC codes decoded on both memoryless and ISI Gaussian channels. Using the Margulis code example, we also show that the augmented decoder reduces the error floors. Finally, we discuss types of BP decoding errors and relate them to the augmented BP decoder.

Efficient Near Maximum-Likelihood Reliability-Based Decoding for Short LDPC Codes

Weiyang Zhang, Chentao Yue, Yonghui Li +1 more

In this paper, we propose an efficient decoding algorithm for short low-density parity check (LDPC) codes by carefully combining the belief propagation (BP) decoding and ordered statistics decoding (OSD) algorithms. Specifically, a modified BP (mBP) algorithm is applied for a certain number of iterations prior to OSD to enhance the reliability of the received message, where an offset parameter is utilized in mBP to control the weight of the extrinsic information in message passing. By carefully selecting the offset parameter and the number of mBP iterations, the number of errors in the most reliable positions (MRPs) in OSD can be reduced by mBP, thereby significantly improving the overall decoding performance of error rate and complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can approach the maximum-likelihood decoding (MLD) for short LDPC codes with only a slight increase in complexity compared to BP and a significant decrease compared to OSD. Specifically, the order- (m -1) decoding of the proposed algorithm can achieve the performance of the order-m OSD.

A high‐performance belief propagation decoding algorithm for codes with short cycles

Ali Karimi-lenji, Monireh Houshmand, Fahimeh Zarmehi

Summary The simplicity of decoding is one of the most important characteristics of the low density parity check (LDPC) codes. Belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm is a well‐known decoding algorithm for LDPC codes. Most LDPC codes with long lengths have short cycles in their Tanner graphs, which reduce the performance of the BP algorithm. In this paper, we present 2 methods to improve the BP decoding algorithm for LDPC codes. In these methods, the calculation of the variable nodes is controlled by using “multiplicative correction factor” and “additive correction factor.” These factors are obtained for 2 separate channels, namely additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and binary symmetric channel (BSC), as 2 functions of code and channel parameters. Moreover, we use the BP‐based method in the calculation of the check nodes, which reduces the required resources. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm has better performance and lower decoding error as compared to BP and similar methods like normalized‐BP and offset‐BP algorithms.

Performance improvement of short-length regular low-density parity-check codes with low-complexity post-processing

Raghunadh K. Bhattar, K.R. Ramakrishnan, K. S. Dasgupta

It is well known that extremely long low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes perform exceptionally well for error correction applications, short-length codes are preferable in practical applications. However, short-length LDPC codes suffer from performance degradation owing to graph-based impairments such as short cycles, trapping sets and stopping sets and so on in the bipartite graph of the LDPC matrix. In particular, performance degradation at moderate to high Eb/N0 is caused by the oscillations in bit node a posteriori probabilities induced by short cycles and trapping sets in bipartite graphs. In this study, a computationally efficient algorithm is proposed to improve the performance of short-length LDPC codes at moderate to high Eb/N0. This algorithm makes use of the information generated by the belief propagation (BP) algorithm in previous iterations before a decoding failure occurs. Using this information, a reliability-based estimation is performed on each bit node to supplement the BP algorithm. The proposed algorithm gives an appreciable coding gain as compared with BP decoding for LDPC codes of a code rate equal to or less than 1/2 rate coding. The coding gains are modest to significant in the case of optimised (for bipartite graph conditioning) regular LDPC codes, whereas the coding gains are huge in the case of unoptimised codes. Hence, this algorithm is useful for relaxing some stringent constraints on the graphical structure of the LDPC code and for developing hardware-friendly designs.
