Remarks on the Ferromagnetic Solutions of the Extended Hubbard Model

Abstract

Abstract The extended Hubbard Hamiltonian is studied using the method of the equations of motion. The decoupling approximations, suitable for the strong intra‐atomic repulsion limit are discussed. One of the approximations (mean field approach to deal with next neighbour interactions) is worked out numerically. The magnetization is obtained as a function of the strength of the next neighbour couplings and of the number of electrons per atom.

Mean‐Field Solution of Strongly Correlated Systems Using Hubbard Atomic Operators. Hubbard Model with Infinite U

Miroslav Kotrla, V. Drchal

Abstract The hierarchy of equations of motion for double‐time Green functions for Hubbard atomic operators is solved using moment‐conserving decoupling. The lowest order gives a new type of meanfield solution which depends on nonlocal correlation functions. The case of Hubbard model with infinite Coulomb interaction is studied and magnetic properties of the mean‐field solution are investigated employing an additional approximation for correlation functions.

Extended Hubbard model in the presence of a magnetic field

Francesco Paolo Mancini, Francesco Paolo Mancini

Abstract. Within the Green’s function and equations of motion formalism it is possible to exactly solve a large class of models useful for the study of strongly correlated systems. Here, we present the exact solution of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with on-site U and first nearest neighbor repulsive V interactions in the presence of an external magnetic field h, in the narrow band limit. At zero temperature

Rigorous solution of a Hubbard model extended by nearest‐neighbour Coulomb and exchange interaction on a triangle and tetrahedron

Rolf Schumann

Abstract The Hubbard model extended by both nearest‐neighbour (nn) Coulomb correlation and nearest‐neighbour Heisenberg exchange is solved rigorously for a triangle and tetrahedron. All eigenvalues and eigenvectors are given as functions of the model parameters in a closed analytical form. For fixed electron numbers we found a multitude of level crossings, both in the ground state and in the excited states in dependence on the various model parameters. By coupling an ensemble of clusters to an electron bath we get the cluster gas model or the cluster gas approximation, if an extended array of weak‐interacting clusters is considered. The grand‐canonical potential Ω (μ, T , h ) and the electron occupation N (μ, T , h ) of the related cluster gases were calculated for arbitrary values (attractive and repulsive) of the three interaction constants. For the cluster gases without the additional interactions we found various steps in N (μ, T = 0, h = 0) higher than one. The reason is the degeneration of ground states differing in their electron occupation by more than one electron. For the triangular cluster gas we have one such degeneration point. For the tetrahedral cluster gas two. As a consequence, we do not find areas with one electron in the μ‐ U ground‐state phase diagram of the triangular cluster gas or with one, two and five electrons in the case of the tetrahedral cluster gas. The degeneration point of the triangular cluster gas can not be destroyed by an applied magnetic field. This holds also for the lower degeneration point of the tetrahedral cluster gas. Otherwise, the upper degeneration point breaks down at a critical magnetic field h c . The dependence of h c on U shows a maximum for strong on‐site correlation. The influence of nn‐exchange and nn‐Coulomb correlation on the ground‐state phase diagrams is calculated. Whereas antiferromagnetic nn‐exchange breaks the degeneration points of the tetrahedral cluster gas partially only, a repulsive nn‐Coulomb correlation lifts the underlying degeneracies completely. Otherwise both ferromagnetic nn‐exchange and attractive nn‐Coulomb interaction stabilise the degeneration points. The consequences of the cluster gas results for extended cluster arrays are discussed.

Density of states in the one‐dimensional Hubbard model

K. Elk

Abstract For the one‐dimensional Hubbard model with nearest‐neighbour interaction a functional equation is derived, which gives an exact solution for the density of states Dδ(ω). This functional equation is numerically solved for different values of the electron density nδ and the interaction strength U. From the resulting behaviour of the density of states, band splitting and an effective band narrowing is obtained. In the limit U → ∞ the band splits into several separate peaks.

Ferromagnetism in one-dimensional Hubbard model induced by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping at electron density 3/2

Yuan-Yuan Yang, Jian Zhang, Hui Pan +1 more

Ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping is explored by using the exact-diagonalization method in a small cluster and the equation-of-motion method in the thermodynamic limit with electron density n = 3/2. With these two complementary methods, it is found that an intermediate value of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude t1 tends to stabilize the fully polarized ferromagnetic state under the condition that the on-site coulomb interaction U is sufficiently large in our model. The ground-state phase diagram of the model is presented in the t1—U plane.

Ground-state spin structure of strongly interacting disordered 1D Hubbard model

Eli Eisenberg, Richard Berkovits

Abstract. We study the influence of on-site disorder on the magnetic properties of the ground state of the infinite-U one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model. We find that the ground state is not ferromagnetic. This is analysed in terms of the algebraic structure of the spin dependence of the Hamiltonian. A simple explanation is derived for the 1=N periodicity in the persistent current for this model. The Hubbard model is the simplest model one can study to examine the effects of correlations between electrons in narrow energy bands. The Hamiltonian consists of a nearest neighbour hopping term and an electron–electron repulsion, U, which acts only when two electrons are on the same site. The Hubbard model is also the canonical model for the study of itinerant ferromagnetism. The strong coupling regime is of special importance for the study of ferromagnetism, since a theorem by Nagaoka [1] states that in theU D 1 limit, the ground state (GS) is ferromagnetic given some connectivity property of the lattice (which holds in most cases for d> 1). The model is solvable in one dimension and it was shown [2] that for open boundary conditions (BCs) the GS for finiteU is a singlet, i.e. there can be no ferromagnetism unless one postulates explicitly spin- or velocity-dependent forces. For infinite U, the GS of
