Effect of thermal fluctuations in the resonance fluorescence of a two-level system

Abstract

In this work we study the effect of thermal fluctuations in the resonance fluorescence of a two-level system. The damped two-level system is driven by a strong incident classical field near resonance frequency. To simulate the thermal bath we introduce a large system of harmonic oscillators that represent the normal modes of the thermal radiation field. To obtain the time development of the fluorescent light intensity we solve the Heisenberg equations of motion transformed in a system of coupled integral equations by an iterative method. The results show that the presence of the bath modifies dramatically the time development of the fluorescence light intensity when compared with the case T=0 K.

Effect of Thermal Fluctuations in the Resonance Fluorescence of a Three-Level System

Couto, H., L. A. Amarante Ribeiro

The effect of thermal fluctuations in the resonance fluorescence of a three-level system is studied. The damped three-level system is driven by two strong incident classical fields near resonances frequencies. The simulation of a thermal bath is obtained with a large system of harmonic oscillators that represent the normal modes of the thermal radiation field. The time evolution of the fluorescent light intensities are obtained solving by a iterative method the Heisenberg equations of motion in the integral form. The results show that the time development of the intensity of the fluorescence light is strongly affected by the interaction of the system with the thermal bath.

Thermal effect in the resonance fluorescence of a two-level system

C. H. A. Fonseca, L. A. Amarante Ribeiro

The damped two-level system, driven by a strong incident classical field near resonance frequency is subjected to the effect of thermal fluctuations. To simulate the thermal bath we introduce a large system of harmonic oscillators that represents the normal modes of the thermal radiation field. From the Heisenberg equations of motion we calculate the power spectrum of the scattered field and the intensity correlation function. The results show that the presence of the bath dramatically modifies the light scattered by the two-level system when compared with the case without a thermal bath.

Resonance fluorescence with squeezed-light excitation

Reeta Vyas, Surendra Singh

Resonance fluorescence from a single two-level atom driven by a beam of squeezed light is studied in the weak-field limit. We consider the situation where the atom is coupled to the ordinary vacuum and only a few field modes corresponding to the driving field are squeezed. The field produced by the degenerate optical parametric oscillator is used as the driving field. Heisenberg equations of motion are solved in the steady-state and analytic expressions for the fluorescent-light intensity and the spectrum of fluorescent light are derived. We also consider photon statistics of fluorescent light. In particular, squeezing, antibunching, and sub-Poissonian statistics of fluorescent photons are discussed, and analytic expressions for the quadrature variance and the two-time intensity correlation function are presented. Contrary to the case of coherent excitation, the second-order intensity correlation function does not factorize. This and other differences are discussed, and curves are presented to illustrate the behavior of various quantities. We also present results for thermal excitation of the atom.

Theory of resonance fluorescence in a fluctuating laser field

W. Vogel, D.‐G. Welsch, K. Wódkiewicz

A method of calculation of multiple-time correlation functions of the resonance fluorescence light from a two-level atom driven by a realistic laser field with phase and amplitude fluctuations is developed. Both kinds of fluctuations are assumed to be Gaussian. The phase fluctuations are treated in the phase-diffusion model. The averaging over the amplitude fluctuations can be performed in a closed way when the relative mean-square amplitude fluctuation is small compared with the ratio of the amplitude correlation decay rate to the characteristic atomic relaxation rate. There is no restriction to Markovian amplitude fluctuations. Arbitrary values for the mean Rabi frequency are allowed. Results are presented for the intensity, the intensity correlation function, and the spectrum of the fluorescent light. It is shown that even in the case when the relative strength of the amplitude fluctuations is small, significant effects can occur due to the finite correlation length of the fluctuations. The results for fast amplitude correlation decay correspond to the situation without amplitude fluctuations. When the correlation time of the amplitude fluctuations becomes comparable with the atomic relaxation times, the Rabi oscillations of the intensity and the intensity correlation function are nearly washed out, and non-Lorentzian line shapes for the side peaks in the spectrum are observed. It is found that the ratio of the heights of the central peak to the side peak increases with increasing correlation time.

Pump-field fluctuations in resonance fluorescence with two-photon resonant excitation

K.‐E. Süsse, W. Vogel, D.‐G. Welsch +1 more

The effects of amplitude and phase fluctuations of the pump laser on the resonance fluorescence under two-photon resonant excitation are studied. The averaging of the stochastic Bloch equations is carried out within the approximation scheme that has recently been applied to the case of one-photon resonant excitation. In the case of two-photon resonant excitation the stochastic pump field gives rise to multiplicative nonlinear Gaussian fluctuation effects. The phase fluctuations are treated in the phase-diffusion model, and the averaging over the amplitude fluctuations is performed by means of generating-function methods. Both the intensity and the intensity correlation of the fluorescent light are studied. When the amplitude fluctuations are weak, the cases of one- and two-photon resonant excitations are similar. The difference between both cases consists of a modification of the Rabi frequency and a faster damping of the Rabi oscillations in the two-photon case. For sufficiently fast correlation decay of the amplitude fluctuations their effect can simply be described by a rate. In the general case of n-photon resonant excitation this rate is larger by a factor of ${n}^{2}$ than that in the case of one-photon resonant excitation. When the amplitude fluctuations are sufficiently strong, the Rabi oscillations are ``washed out.'' In the case of one-photon resonant excitation both the intensity and the intensity correlation function of the scattered light develop into step functions over time. In the two-photon case the dynamics of both quantities is determined by a new time constant which acts as both the oscillation time and the damping time. Consequently an overshoot peak occurs in both the intensity and the intensity correlation instead of the tendency to become step functions.

Non-Markovian dephasing of two-level resonance fluorescence in a strong radiation field

Zhifang Deng, Shaul Mukamel

A non-Markovian microscopic theory for the spontaneous emission spectrum of a two-level atom driven by a strong laser field and undergoing dephasing via the interaction with a thermal bath is developed. The present theory is valid for an arbitrary correlation time scale of the bath relative to the linewidth and interpolates from the Markovian to the static limits. Model calculations using the stochastic line-shape function of Kubo show how the characteristic triplet spectrum is modified by the interaction with the bath. The present results generalize our previous studies of resonance Raman scattering in a three-level system in a strong radiation field.
