High bit rate QKD using sideband modulation scheme with active dispersion compensation

F. Patois, Johann Cussey, Nadia Butterlin +3 more

Major progress in quantum key distribution (QKD) has been realised recently both for free space and fiber implementations. For advanced QKD systems over fiber, information is encoded in the relative phase between delayed pulses or in polarization. Recently, we proposed an alternative approach where optical pulses are weakly modulated to generate spectral domain sidebands about a central peak. The information is encoded by the relative phase between the sidebands and the central peak. In this paper, we propose a modified architecture based on phase encoding with active dispersion compensation at 12.5 GHz that potentially allows the use of a high bit rate clock.

Polarization insensitive phase modulator for quantum cryptosystems

Bing Qi, Leilei Huang, Hoi‐Kwong Lo +1 more

In this paper, we propose a polarization-insensitive phase modulation scheme based on frequency modulation of light waves using either one or a pair of acousto-optic modulators. A stable Sagnac quantum key distribution (QKD) system employing this technique is also proposed. The interference visibility for a 40km and a 10km fiber loop is 96% and 99% respectively, at single-photon level. We ran standard BB84 QKD protocol in a simplified Sagnac setup (40km fiber loop) continuously for one hour and the measured quantum bit error rate stayed within 2%-5% range.

Experimental quantum key distribution with double protocol

Hu Hua-Peng, Jing Zhang, Jindong Wang +5 more

We propose one kind of improved QKD scheme based on time coding and phase coding. The pulse which had been discarded on the BB84 protocol phase coding QKD system is used to realize the time coding protocol, thus the useful bits rate in the present scheme can be doubled. At the same time, the phase coding keys and the time coding keys are obtained, we may combine both as new keys which can enhancethe generated rate and the sensitivity of monitor. At Bob’s side, a Fraday-Michelson is used instead of a traditional M-Z interferometer, which improves the stability of the interference visibility. With the proposed experimental setup, a stable quantum key distribution was performed over 90 km fiber. It is shown in our experiment that the characteristics of our system are as follows: secure, stable and economical.

Experimental quantum key distribution with active phase randomization

Yi Zhao, Bing Qi, Hoi-Kwong Lo

Phase randomization is an important assumption made in many security proofs of practical quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. Here, the authors present the first experimental demonstration of QKD with reliable active phase randomization. One key contribution is a polarization-insensitive phase modulator, which they added to a commercial phase-coding QKD system to randomize the global phase of each bit. They also proposed a useful method to verify the phase randomization experimentally. Their result shows very low quantum bit error rate (<1%). They expect this active phase randomization process to be a standard part in future QKD setups due to its significance and feasibility.

Sagnac Quantum Key Distribution Using Novel Polarization-Insensitive Phase Modulators Based On Frequency Shift

Leilei Huang, Bing Qi, R. Mong +2 more

We demonstrate a stable Sagnac quantum key distribution implementing BB84 phase-encoding protocol based on acousto-optic frequency shifters. The quantum bit error rate remains 4-6.5% for at least one hour without recalibration or feedback control.

High-speed robust polarization modulation for quantum key distribution

Yang Li, Yu-Huai Li, Hongbo Xie +7 more

Polarization modulation plays a key role in polarization-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD). Here, we report a new, to the best of our knowledge, polarization modulation scheme based on an inherently stable Sagnac interferometer. The presented scheme is free of polarization mode dispersion and calibration as well as insensitive to environmental influences. Successful experiments at a repetition frequency of 1.25 GHz have been conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and stability of the scheme. The measured average quantum bit-error rate of the four polarization states is as low as 0.27% for 80 consecutive minutes without any adjustment. This high-speed intrinsically stable polarization modulation can be widely applied to many polarization-encoding QKD systems, such as BB84, MDI, etc.
