On the partial saturation of the uncertainty relations of a mixed Gaussian state

Abstract

Let ρ the density matrix of a mixed Gaussian state. Assuming that one of the Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty inequalities is saturated by ρ, e.g. , we show that there exists a unique pure Gaussian state whose Wigner distribution is dominated by that of ρ and having the same variances and covariance Δ ρ X 1 , Δ ρ P 1 and Δ ρ ( X 1 , P 1 ) as ρ. This property can be viewed as an analytic version of Gromov's non-squeezing theorem in the linear case, which implies that the intersection of a symplectic ball by a single plane of conjugate coordinates determines the radius of this ball. We conclude by giving a short geometric proof of the fact that pure Gaussian states are the only quantum states saturating the Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty inequalities.

The Unique Pure Gaussian State Determined by the Partial Saturation of the Uncertainty Relations of a Mixed Gaussian State

Maurice A. de Gosson

Let ρ the density matrix of a mixed Gaussian state. Assuming that one of the Robertson--Schrödinger uncertainty inequalities is saturated by ρ, e.g. (Δ^{ρ}X_1)^2(Δ^{ρ}P_1)^2=Δ^{ρ}(X_1,P_1)^2+(1/4)\hbar^2, we show that there exists a unique pure Gaussian state whose Wigner distribution is dominated by that of ρ and having the same variances and covariance Δ^{ρ}X_1,Δ^{ρ}P_1, and Δ^{ρ}(X_1,P_1) as ρ. This property can be viewed as an analytic version of Gromov's non-squeezing theorem in the linear case, which implies that the intersection of a symplectic ball by a single plane of conjugate coordinates determines the radius of this ball.

A Refinement of the Robertson–Schrödinger Uncertainty Principle and a Hirschman–Shannon Inequality for Wigner Distributions

Nuno Costa Dias, Maurice A. de Gosson, João Nuno Prata

We propose a refinement of the Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty principle (RSUP) using Wigner distributions. This new principle is stronger than the RSUP. In particular, and unlike the RSUP, which can be saturated by many phase space functions, the refined RSUP can be saturated by pure Gaussian Wigner functions only. Moreover, the new principle is technically as simple as the standard RSUP. In addition, it makes a direct connection with modern harmonic analysis, since it involves the Wigner transform and its symplectic Fourier transform, which is the radar ambiguity function. As a by-product of the refined RSUP, we derive inequalities involving the entropy and the covariance matrix of Wigner distributions. These inequalities refine the Shanon and the Hirschman inequalities for the Wigner distribution of a mixed quantum state $$\rho $$ . We prove sharp estimates which critically depend on the purity of $$\rho $$ and which are saturated in the Gaussian case.

Universality in uncertainty relations for a quantum particle

Spiros Kechrimparis, Stefan Weigert

Abstract A general theory of preparational uncertainty relations for a quantum particle in one spatial dimension is developed. We derive conditions which determine whether a given smooth function of the particle’s variances and its covariance is bounded from below. Whenever a global minimum exists, an uncertainty relation has been obtained. The squeezed number states of a harmonic oscillator are found to be universal : no other pure or mixed states will saturate any such relation. Geometrically, we identify a convex uncertainty region in the space of second moments which is bounded by the inequality derived by Robertson and Schrödinger. Our approach provides a unified perspective on existing uncertainty relations for a single continuous variable, and it leads to new inequalities for second moments which can be checked experimentally.

Uncertainty relations with the variance and the quantum Fisher information based on convex decompositions of density matrices

Géza Tóth, Florian Fröwis

We present several inequalities related to the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation. In all these inequalities, we consider a decomposition of the density matrix into a mixture of states, and use the fact that the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation is valid for all these components. By considering a convex roof of the bound, we obtain an alternative derivation of the relation in Fr\"owis et al. [Phys. Rev. A 92, 012102 (2015)], and we can also list a number of conditions that are needed to saturate the relation. We present a formulation of the Cram\'er-Rao bound involving the convex roof of the variance. By considering a concave roof of the bound in the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation over decompositions to mixed states, we obtain an improvement of the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation. We consider similar techniques for uncertainty relations with three variances. Finally, we present further uncertainty relations that provide lower bounds on the metrological usefulness of bipartite quantum states based on the variances of the canonical position and momentum operators for two-mode continuous variable systems. We show that the violation of well-known entanglement conditions in these systems discussed in Duan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2722 (2000)] and Simon [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2726 (2000)] implies that the state is more useful metrologically than certain relevant subsets of separable states. We present similar results concerning entanglement conditions with angular momentum operators for spin systems.
