Robertson-Schroedinger Uncertainty Relation Refined by Skew Information

Abstract

We report a refinement of Robertson-Schroedinger uncertainty relation via Wigner-Yanase skew information. Besides the well known quantum uncertainty arising from the noncommutativity of observables, there is classical uncertainty arising from the mixedness of the states that is quantified by the difference between the variance and the skew information. Our refined uncertainty relation for canonical observables is saturated by all the Gaussian states, pure or mixed, and thus provides an alternative measure for the non-Gaussianity of quantum states. Generalizations to the case of metric adjusted skew information are presented, unifying and refining most of previous results.

Heisenberg uncertainty relation for mixed states

Shunlong Luo

The Heisenberg uncertainty relation sets a fundamental limit for quantum measurement of incompatible observables. Its standard form derived by Weyl and Robertson is of purely quantum nature when the state is pure. However, for mixed states, because the variance involving a mixed state is a hybrid of classical and quantum uncertainty, the conventional uncertainty relation is of a ``mixed'' flavor. It is desirable to seek some decomposition of variance into classical and quantum parts and to cast the Heisenberg uncertainty relation for mixed states in a more quantum form. By use of the skew information introduced by Wigner and Yanase in 1963, we make such an attempt and establish a different uncertainty relation which is stronger than the conventional one.

Uncertainty relation of mixed states by means of Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information

Dion Li, X. Li, F. Wang +3 more

The variance of an observable in a quantum state is usually used to describe Heisenberg uncertainty relation. For mixed states, the variance includes quantum and classical uncertainties. By means of the skew information and the decomposition of the variance, a stronger uncertainty relation was presented by Luo [Phys. Rev. A 72, 042110 (2005)]. In this paper, by using Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information which is a generalization of the skew information, we propose a general uncertainty relation of mixed states.

Tighter sum uncertainty relations based on metric-adjusted skew information

Ruonan Ren, Ping Li, Mingfei Ye +1 more

Uncertainty principle is one of the most essential features of quantum mechanics, and it reveals the intrinsic difference that distinguishes the quantum world from the classical world. In this paper, we focus on the uncertainty relations based on metric-adjusted skew information. By making full use of the norm property, we establish an uncertainty relation for arbitrary finite $n$ observables based on metric-adjusted skew information, and we give two new uncertainty relations for arbitrary finite $N$ quantum channels based on metric-adjusted skew information. For arbitrary two observables and two channels, the uncertainty relations we give are not only better than the uncertainty relations detailed in [Quantum Inf. Process. 20, 72 (2021)], but also are the equations. The equation of the uncertainty relation is more accurate than the inequation of the usual uncertainty relation, which has important advantages in the application of quantum information technology, such as quantum communication and the quantum precision measurement. Meanwhile, our results are suitable to Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information that is a special metric-adjusted skew information and Wigner-Yanase skew information that is a special Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information. Some examples about Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information are given and show that the new lower bounds are tighter. The results play an important role in quantum information processing in this paper.

State-dependent and state-independent uncertainty relations for skew information and standard deviation

Sahil

Abstract In this work, we derive state-dependent uncertainty relations (uncertainty equalities) in which commutators of incompatible operators (not necessarily Hermitian) are explicitly present and state-independent uncertainty relations based on the Wigner-Yanase (-Dyson) skew information. We derive uncertainty equality based on standard deviation for incompatible operators with mixed states, a generalization of previous works in which only pure states were considered. We show that for pure states, the Wigner-Yanase skew information based state-independent uncertainty relations become standard deviation based state-independent uncertainty relations which turn out to be tighter uncertainty relations for some cases than the ones given in previous works, and we generalize the previous works for arbitrary operators. As the Wigner-Yanase skew information of a quantum channel can be considered as a measure of quantum coherence of a density operator with respect to that channel, we show that there exists a state-independent uncertainty relation for the coherence measures of the density operator with respect to a collection of different channels. We show that state-dependent and state-independent uncertainty relations based on a more general version of skew information called generalized skew information which includes the Wigner-Yanase (-Dyson) skew information and the Fisher information as special cases hold. In qubits, we derive tighter state-independent uncertainty inequalities for different form of generalized skew informations and standard deviations, and state-independent uncertainty equalities involving generalized skew informations and standard deviations of spin operators along three orthogonal directions. Finally, we provide a scheme to determine the Wigner-Yanase (-Dyson) skew information of an unknown observable which can be performed in experiment using the notion of weak values.

Quantum uncertainty of mixed states based on skew information

Shunlong Luo

The uncertainty of a mixed state has two quite different origins: classical mixing and quantum randomness. While the classical aspect (mixedness) is significantly quantified by the von Neumann entropy, it seems that we still do not have a well accepted measure of quantum uncertainty. In terms of the skew information introduced by Wigner and Yanase in 1963 in the context of quantum measurements, we will propose an intrinsic measure for synthesizing quantum uncertainty of a mixed state and investigate its fundamental properties. We illustrate how it arises naturally from a naive hidden-variable approach to entanglement and how it exhibits a simple relation to the notion of negativity, which is an entanglement monotone introduced quite recently. We further show that it has a dramatic nonextensive feature resembling the probability law relating operations of two events. This measure of quantum uncertainty provides an alternative quantity complementary to the von Neumann entropy for studying mixedness and quantum correlations.

Quantifying non-Gaussianity of bosonic fields via an uncertainty relation

Shuangshuang Fu, Shunlong Luo, Yue Zhang

While Gaussian states and associated Gaussian operations are basic ingredients and convenient objects for continuous-variable quantum information, it is also realized that non-Gaussianity is an important resource for quantum information processing. The characterization and quantification of non-Gaussianity have been widely studied in the past decade, with several significant measures for non-Gaussianity introduced. In this work, by exploiting an information-theoretic refinement of the conventional Heisenberg uncertainty relation and a physical characterization of Gaussian states as minimum uncertainty states, we introduce an easily computable measure for non-Gaussianity of bosonic field states in terms of the Wigner-Yanase skew information. Fundamental properties, as well as intuitive meaning, of this measure are unveiled. The concept is illustrated by prototypical non-Gaussian states, and compared with various existent measures for non-Gaussianity. Its merit and physical significance are elucidated.
