Quantum uncertainty of mixed states based on skew information

Abstract

The uncertainty of a mixed state has two quite different origins: classical mixing and quantum randomness. While the classical aspect (mixedness) is significantly quantified by the von Neumann entropy, it seems that we still do not have a well accepted measure of quantum uncertainty. In terms of the skew information introduced by Wigner and Yanase in 1963 in the context of quantum measurements, we will propose an intrinsic measure for synthesizing quantum uncertainty of a mixed state and investigate its fundamental properties. We illustrate how it arises naturally from a naive hidden-variable approach to entanglement and how it exhibits a simple relation to the notion of negativity, which is an entanglement monotone introduced quite recently. We further show that it has a dramatic nonextensive feature resembling the probability law relating operations of two events. This measure of quantum uncertainty provides an alternative quantity complementary to the von Neumann entropy for studying mixedness and quantum correlations.

Uncertainty Relations for Coherence*

Shunlong Luo, Yuan Sun

Abstract Quantum mechanical uncertainty relations are fundamental consequences of the incompatible nature of noncommuting observables. In terms of the coherence measure based on the Wigner-Yanase skew information, we establish several uncertainty relations for coherence with respect to von Neumann measurements, mutually unbiased bases (MUBs), and general symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measurements (SIC-POVMs), respectively. Since coherence is intimately connected with quantum uncertainties, the obtained uncertainty relations are of intrinsically quantum nature, in contrast to the conventional uncertainty relations expressed in terms of variance, which are of hybrid nature (mixing both classical and quantum uncertainties). From a dual viewpoint, we also derive some uncertainty relations for coherence of quantum states with respect to a fixed measurement. In particular, it is shown that if the density operators representing the quantum states do not commute, then there is no measurement (reference basis) such that the coherence of these states can be simultaneously small .

Robertson-Schroedinger Uncertainty Relation Refined by Skew Information

Sixia Yu, C. H. Oh

We report a refinement of Robertson-Schroedinger uncertainty relation via Wigner-Yanase skew information. Besides the well known quantum uncertainty arising from the noncommutativity of observables, there is classical uncertainty arising from the mixedness of the states that is quantified by the difference between the variance and the skew information. Our refined uncertainty relation for canonical observables is saturated by all the Gaussian states, pure or mixed, and thus provides an alternative measure for the non-Gaussianity of quantum states. Generalizations to the case of metric adjusted skew information are presented, unifying and refining most of previous results.

Heisenberg uncertainty relation for mixed states

Shunlong Luo

The Heisenberg uncertainty relation sets a fundamental limit for quantum measurement of incompatible observables. Its standard form derived by Weyl and Robertson is of purely quantum nature when the state is pure. However, for mixed states, because the variance involving a mixed state is a hybrid of classical and quantum uncertainty, the conventional uncertainty relation is of a ``mixed'' flavor. It is desirable to seek some decomposition of variance into classical and quantum parts and to cast the Heisenberg uncertainty relation for mixed states in a more quantum form. By use of the skew information introduced by Wigner and Yanase in 1963, we make such an attempt and establish a different uncertainty relation which is stronger than the conventional one.

Quantifying correlations via the Wigner-Yanase skew information

Shunlong Luo, Shuangshuang Fu, Choo Hiap Oh

In order to quantify the information content of quantum states in the presence of conserved quantities, Wigner and Yanase introduced the notion of skew information [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 49, 910, (1963)], which was later identified as a paradigmatic version of quantum Fisher information. The skew information is quite different from, yet deeply connected with, the ubiquitous quantum entropies and has important applications in quantum theory. In this paper, pursuing further the original idea of Wigner and Yanase, we propose a measure for correlations in terms of the skew information, investigate its fundamental properties, and elucidate its characteristics. An appealing feature of this measure for correlations is that its evaluation does not involve any optimization, in sharp contrast to the entanglement and discord measures, and can be straightforwardly calculated. In particular, the algorithm and explicit formulas for general bipartite states are prescribed, and simple analytical expressions for some special states, including arbitrary bipartite pure states, the Bell-diagonal states, and some highly symmetric states such as the Werner states and the isotropic states, are obtained.

Uncertainty relation of mixed states by means of Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information

Dion Li, X. Li, F. Wang +3 more

The variance of an observable in a quantum state is usually used to describe Heisenberg uncertainty relation. For mixed states, the variance includes quantum and classical uncertainties. By means of the skew information and the decomposition of the variance, a stronger uncertainty relation was presented by Luo [Phys. Rev. A 72, 042110 (2005)]. In this paper, by using Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information which is a generalization of the skew information, we propose a general uncertainty relation of mixed states.

Complementary relation between quantum entanglement and entropic uncertainty

Yun Cao, Dong Wang, Xiao‐Gang Fan +3 more

Abstract Quantum entanglement is regarded as one of the core concepts, which is used to describe the non-classical correlation between subsystems, and entropic uncertainty relation plays a vital role in quantum precision measurement. It is well known that entanglement of formation can be expressed by von Neumann entropy of subsystems for arbitrary pure states. An interesting question is naturally raised: is there any intrinsic correlation between the entropic uncertainty relation and quantum entanglement? Or if the relation can be applied to estimate the entanglement. In this work, we focus on exploring the complementary relation between quantum entanglement and the entropic uncertainty relation. The results show that there exists an inequality relation between both of them for an arbitrary two-qubit system, and specifically the larger uncertainty will induce the weaker entanglement of the probed system, and vice versa. Besides, we use randomly generated states as illustrations to verify our results. Therefore, we claim that our observations might offer and support the validity of using the entropy uncertainty relation to estimate quantum entanglement.
