Abstract

We propose a simple experimental approach to measure and quantify the polarization hole-burning in an optical amplifier. The spectral properties of polarization hole-burning are similar to those of spectral hole-burning

Theory, simulation, and measurements of spectral hole burning in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers

Maxim A. Bolshtyansky

This study presents a modified approach to measure and quantify spectral hole burning (SHB). The approach does not depend on the individual spectral shapes of the ions for the gain shape prediction, but rather on some statistically averaged functions that can be experimentally measured. In addition, this approach is easier to implement without the loss of accuracy. Based on this approach, an experiment is designed and conducted to demonstrate whether the thermal equalization and the excitation transfer are related to the SHB phenomenon in EDF.

Polarization-dependent gain in erbium-doped fibers

R. W. Keys, S.J. Wilson, M. Healy +3 more

One component of polarization-dependent gain (PDG) in optical amplifiers has been shown to originate from polarization hole burning (PHB) in the erbium fibers.1 In this paper we quantify its magnitude for copumped amplifiers under operating conditions typical of those used in long-haul amplified systems. We find that PDG can be significant, even when the polarization state of the signal is circular, and that hole burning due to the polarization of the 1480-nm pump laser contributes significantly to the overall polarization-dependent gain of the fiber.

Dynamics of Spectral Hole Burning in EDFAs: Dependency on Pump Wavelength and Pump Power

Lutz Rapp, João M. Ferreira

Pump wavelength and pump power dependency of the dynamical response of spectral hole burning (SHB) in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is investigated. The experimental results show a clear dependency on pump wavelength also in the 1480-nm range. Similar to other effects in EDFAs affecting transient performance, dynamics of SHB speeds up with increasing pump power. We conclude that the pump has a significant contribution to SHB and has to be taken into account in numerical models for SHB.
