Thermofield analysis of squeezing and statistical mixtures in quantum optics

Abstract

We investigate the representation of mixed states in quantum optics by pure states in an expanded-state space. This thermofield representation is used to describe interactions involving thermal averages and, in particular, interactions involving parametric couplings. We find the thermofield representation of utility in the analysis of non-classical aspects of photon statistics, such as two-mode squeezing of light fluctuations.

Obtainment of thermal noise from a pure quantum state

Bernard Yurke, Mary J. Potasek

It is shown that if one has access to only one mode of a two-mode squeezed-vacuum state, the photon statistics of this mode is indistinguishable from that of a thermal distribution. Parametric interactions that give rise to two-mode squeezing thus provide a mechanism for thermalization that is intrinsically quantum mechanical.

Minimum squeezing to make a two-mode thermal state non-classical

C T Lee

Based on a criterion for non-classical effects in two-mode radiations recently introduced by the author and using the thermofield representation of thermal states, an expression for the minimum degree of squeezing necessary to make a two-mode thermal radiation non-classical is derived.

Quantum Statistical Properties of Mixed Degenerate and Non-degenerate Parametric Processes

Jan Peřina, J. Bajer

Quadrature and integrated intensity fluctuations are found for mixed degenerate and non-degenerate optical parametric processes in single and compound modes. Additionally to quantum statistical effects for single processes new phenomena can occur arising from the coupling of both the processes, which can support squeezing of vacuum fluctuations and sub-Poisson photon statistics in single and compound modes.

Quantum-statistical properties of two coupled modes of electromagnetic field

S. Kalmykov, M. E. Veĭsman

Squeezing the quantum fluctuations of the two-mode light due to the nonstationary coupling between the quadrature components ${q}_{1}$ and ${q}_{2}$ is examined. The \ensuremath{\delta}- and step-function mode couplings are considered. The conditions of weak and strong step-function coupling are distinguished, the latter being the condition of the instability for the classical counterpart of the quantum system under study. Under the conditions of weak coupling the quadrature squeezing is established in both a two-mode electromagnetic noise in thermal equilibrium (the thermal state) and a two-mode correlated coherent state (CCS). Squeezing in the thermal state is suppressed at a high temperature. The photon distribution function (PDF) in the thermal state reveals oscillatory behavior for both high and low temperature, the oscillations decrease while the temperature increases. The PDF in the CCS can be either oscillatory or smooth, whereas the photon statistics is essentially non-Poissonian. The nonclassical intermode photon-number correlations in the CCS are briefly studied.

Interaction of a cavity mode with coherent light in a closed cavity coupled to thermal reservoir

Shambel Derso

In this thesis, we investigate the quantum optical properties of a single cavity mode interacting with an external classical coherent driving field inside a closed cavity, which is coupled to a thermal reservoir via a single-port mirror. We establish a mathematically comprehensive framework utilizing both the Master Equation under the density operator formalism and the Quantum Langevin Equation under the Heisenberg picture. By analyzing the system with an arbitrary ordering of reservoir noise operators, we derive the steady-state P-representation of the quasi-probability distribution. Employing this quasi-probability distribution, we analytically compute the mean photon number, photon number variance, photon number distribution, and the second-order intensity correlation function. Our findings establish that the interaction of the cavity mode with the coherent drive in the presence of thermal fluctuations exhibits strictly super-Poissonian statistics. The mean photon number and photon number variance scale monotonically with both the strength of the external coherent drive and the average thermal photon occupation of the reservoir. Furthermore, we prove that the produced cavity field does not exhibit quadrature squeezing, confirming that the presence of thermal noise effectively destroys quantum squeezing in this configuration. Finally, the input-output is evaluated to verify the preservation of the commutation relations of the formalism output field.
