Abstract

Photon emission with nonclassical photon statistics is discussed with a single InAlAs quantum dot. The deterministic single-photon generation in which the emitted photon wavelength matches well to the highly sensitive wavelength region of highly efficient, low-noise Si-single-photon detectors and also to an atmospheric transmission window is demonstrated. Competing transition processes between neutral and charged exciton species originating from an exclusive formation in the same single quantum dot are clarified. It was found that suppressing the charged exciton formation is possible by a quasi-resonant excitation for a deterministic monochromatic single-photon generation. Polarization-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy clearly indicates the preservation of photon polarizations between photons emitted by biexciton/exciton recombinations. Furthermore, the deterministic polarization-correlated photon pair generation with biexciton-exciton cascaded transition occurring in a single quantum dot is directly confirmed by the polarized second-order photon correlation measurements. This indicates a longer polarization flip time than the exciton lifetime, which is an essential requirement for the deterministic Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen photon pair generation under the present biexciton-exciton cascaded transition scheme.

Controlling the polarization correlation of photon pairs from a charge-tunable quantum dot

Robert James Young, Samuel Dewhurst, R. M. Stevenson +4 more

Correlation between the rectilinear polarizations of the photons emitted from the biexciton decay in a single quantum dot is investigated in a device which allows the charge state of the dot to be controlled. Optimizing emission from the neutral exciton states maximizes the operating efficiency of the biexciton decay. This is important for single dot applications such as a triggered source of entangled photons. As the bias on the device is reduced correlation between the two photons is found to fall dramatically as emission from the negatively charged exciton becomes significant. Lifetime measurements demonstrate that electronic spin-scattering is the likely cause.

Polarization-correlated photon pairs from a single quantum dot

Charles Santori, David A. Fattal, Matthew A. Pelton +2 more

Polarization correlation in a linear basis, but not entanglement, is observed between the biexciton and single-exciton photons emitted by a single InAs quantum dot in a two-photon cascade. The results are well described quantitatively by a probabilistic model that includes two decay paths for a biexciton through a nondegenerate pair of one-exciton states, with the polarization of the emitted photons depending on the decay path. The results show that spin nondegeneracy due to quantum-dot asymmetry is a significant obstacle to the realization of an entangled-photon generation device.

Photon correlation spectroscopy of a single quantum dot

We report photon correlation measurements that reveal unique signatures of biexciton and charged exciton emissions in a single self-assembled InAs quantum dot. Biexciton emission exhibits both bunching and antibunching under continuous-wave excitation and only antibunching under pulsed excitation. Cross correlation between biexciton and single-exciton emissions reveals highly asymmetric features due to cascaded emission. Under our excitation conditions, no polarization correlations between the exciton and biexciton emissions were observed.

Polarization-entangled Photon Pairs From A Single GaAs Quantum Dot

Yusuke Arashida, T. Hanazawa, Yoshihiro Ogawa +3 more

We have studied photon correlation measurements on the photoluminescence (PL) of a self‐assembled single GaAs quantum dots (QD) under 8 K. The QD exhibited several peaks on the PL spectra arising from the recombination of multi‐excitonic complexes. Photon correlation measurements show several photon pairs emitted from the cascade of neutral and charged biexcitons. The photon pairs of the neutral biexcitons did not exhibit entanglement due to anisotropy of the QD, while we succeeded in observing the entanglement from the photon pairs from the charged biexcitons. This result can be understood by considering the energy structure of the charged states having Kramers doublets in the anisotropic QD.

Single quantum dots as photon pair emitters

Summary form only given. A realization of time-bin entanglement obtained from quantum dots would join the strength of long distance transmission that characterizes this type of entanglement with the single photon state purity of the quantum dot emission. Compared with polarization entanglement from quantum dots this scheme does not require elimination of the fine structure splitting responsible for partial distinguishability of the quantum dot cascades [1].Here, we present our results on coherent and resonant excitation of quantum dots, creation of photon pairs, scattering free emission and measurement of the high purity of the emitted photons [2, 3]. In addition, we will show our measurements of the generated time-bin entanglement. To excite a single quantum dot we performed two-photon resonant excitation of the biexciton state. Here, we exploited the biexciton binding energy in order to use the laser light which was not resonant to any photon emitted from the quantum dot (Fig. 1a). Our measurements were performed on a single self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dot. We confirmed the resonant nature of the excitation by observing Rabi oscillations (Fig. 1b). Additionally, we performed Ramsey interference measurement and determined the coherence time of the ground-biexciton state superposition. These measurements show that we can coherently transfer the phase of the excitation laser onto the quantum dot system, a necessary requirement to obtain time-bin entanglement. To test the statistics of the emitted state we measured the auto-correlation of the emitted photons (Fig. 3c). Here, the auto-correlation parameter at zero delay was measured to be 0.012(1) without and 0.0073(8) with background subtraction. In addition, we performed a measurement to characterize the state emitted from a quantum dot using a witness-based criterion described in [4]. With this measurement we experimentally confirmed that the resonantly excited quantum dot emits a non-Gaussian state of light (Fig. 1d). This measurement is the first of this nature ever performed on a semiconductor single photon emitter.

Single-Photon Emission from a Single InAs Quantum Dot

Dou Xiu-Ming, Baoquan Sun, Huang She-Song +2 more

Excitation power-dependent micro-photoluminescence spectra and photon-correlation measurement are used to study the optical properties and photon statistics of single InAs quantum dots. Exciton and biexciton emissions, whose photoluminescence intensities have linear and quadratic excitation power dependences, respectively, are identified. Under pulsed laser excitation, the zero time delay peak of second order correlation function corresponding to exciton emission is well suppressed, which is a clear evidence of single photon emission.
