Optical Dead Time Effects And Sub Poissonion Photo-Electron Counting Statistics

J.G. Walker, Eric Jakeman

The use of dead time effects to generate sub-Poissonion photo-electron counting statistics is discussed. An experiment is described in which dead times are introduced using an optical shutter triggered by photo-detection events. Although the triggering photo-electron train is sub-Poissonion and antibunched, the light sampled by a second detector gives rise to a super-Poissonion and bunched train of photo-elecrons. A second experiment is proposed which would generate truly sub-Poisson light (ie detector independent). This is based on the use of optical dead times in parametric fluorescence.

Modelling photo-detectors in quantum optics

Peter P. Rohde, Timothy C. Ralph

Photo-detection plays a fundamental role in experimental quantum optics and is of particular importance in the emerging field of linear optics quantum computing. Present theoretical treatment of photo-detectors is highly idealized and fails to consider many important physical effects. We present a physically motivated model for photo-detectors which accommodates for the effects of finite resolution, bandwidth and efficiency, as well as dark counts and dead-time. We apply our model to two simple well-known applications, which illustrates the significance of these characteristics.

Influence of light source and detector’s imperfections on the photon counting statistics

Aleksei Reutov, Сыч Денис Васильевич

Abstract Photon counting provides a valuable tool for measuring quantum properties of light. Unavoidable imperfections of photon detectors lead to discrepancies between the statistics of photons and statistics of photon counts. Here we consider dead-time corrections and influence of intensity fluctuations for simulated Poissonian statistics of photo counts for the pulsed or continuous wave coherent light sources. We analyse dependence between the statistical moments of corrected distribution and the mean photon number, dead-time, and level of intensity fluctuations.
