Abstract

We demonstrated the direct generation of multipartite continuous-variable entanglement and investigated its robustness against losses. This led to the development of experimental capabilities to fully characterize a six-mode quantum optical state.

Multipartite entanglement

First, we show how the quantum circuits for generating and measuring multi-party entanglement of qubits can be translated to continuous quantum variables. We derive sufficient inseparability criteria for $N$-party continuous-variable states and discuss their applicability. Then, we consider a family of multipartite entangled states (multi-party multi-mode states with one mode per party) described by continuous quantum variables and analyze their properties. These states can be efficiently generated using squeezed light and linear optics.

Demonstration of tripartite cat states in two distinct classes of entanglement

Entanglement is a cornerstone of quantum mechanics and an essential resource for quantum computation, communication, and metrology. While bipartite entanglement is extensively studied, genuine multipartite entangled states remain largely inaccessible in the continuous-variable domain. Here, we experimentally realize continuous-variable tripartite entangled cat states of the two distinct classes with fundamentally inequivalent properties, namely GHZ-cat and W-cat states, encoded across three microwave resonators coupled to an ancillary superconducting transmon. We develop one-to-all conditional controls on the three oscillators by fully utilizing three energy levels of the transmon to generate these states in a single piece of hardware and employ an efficient subspace tomography protocol for state reconstruction. We obtain measurement-corrected state fidelities of $0.83\pm0.02$ for GHZ-cat and $0.70\pm0.02$ for W-cat, both exceeding the thresholds for genuine multipartite entanglement, with the W-state certification further supported by an optimized fully decomposable witness directly computed with the reconstructed density matrix. We validate the distinct entanglement classes by experimentally demonstrating that pairwise entanglement is present in the W-cat state but absent in the GHZ-cat state. Our technique for the on-demand generation and characterization of inequivalent classes of tripartite continuous-variable entanglement provides a testbed for studying multipartite bosonic entanglement and its robustness to loss, and a building block for future quantum information processing with multipartite bosonic codes.

Characterizing the Multipartite Entanglement Structure of Non-Gaussian Continuous-Variable States with a Single Evolution Operator

Mingsheng Tian, Xiaoting Gao, Boxuan Jing +4 more

Multipartite entanglement is an essential resource for quantum information tasks, but characterizing entanglement structures in continuous-variable systems remains challenging, especially in multimode non-Gaussian scenarios. In this Letter, we introduce an efficient method for detecting multipartite entanglement structures in continuous-variable states. Based on the quantum Fisher information, we propose a systematic approach to identify an encoding operator that can efficiently capture the quantum correlations in multimode non-Gaussian states. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on over 10^{5} randomly generated multimode-entangled quantum states, achieving a very high success rate in entanglement detection. Additionally, the robustness of our method can be considerably enhanced against losses by expanding the set of accessible operators. This Letter provides a general framework for characterizing entanglement structures in diverse continuous-variable systems, enabling a number of experimentally relevant applications.
