On stimulated VUV emission of atomic helium in a Bose—Einstein condensate: II

Лев Абрамович Ривлин

The scenario of the experiment on observation of stimulated VUV emission at a wavelength of 62 nm from metastable states of helium atoms in a Bose—Einstein condensate moving along an extended quantum-well trap is further considered taking into account the asymptotic behaviour of the current value of the stimulated emission cross section. Quantitative estimates are presented.

Towards Bose-Einstein condensation with metastable helium atoms

Summary form only given. Until now Bose-Einstein condensation has only been achieved for atoms in the first group of the periodic table. The goal of our experiment is to obtain this phase transition in a gas of ultra-cold metastable (2 /sup 3/S/sub 1/) helium atoms, using a combination of laser cooling, magnetic trapping and evaporative cooling. Dense cold samples of metastable helium are a well-suited tool for surface potential studies and precision measurements.

A Bose-Einstein condensation experiment is used to create ultracold metastable helium (23S1) atoms which are probed by a 389nm laser connecting with the 33P state to study photoassociation in the short-lived molecular states thus created.
