Abstract

The properties of coupled long-lived states of the electromagnetic field + matter system that are induced by a collision of two counter-propagating coherent pulses in a dense resonant media are discussed. It is demonstrated that the system possesses properties of a mirrorless polariton nanocavity with a high Q-factor.

New ultra high-speed all-optical coherent D-trigger

Sergei N Bagayev, V. S. Egorov, В. Г. Николаев +3 more

We study the interaction of two counterpropagating unipolar video pulses of electromagnetic radiation in a dense resonant two-level medium. The pulse durations are less than one oscillation period of an atomic transition. We show that a polariton cluster (i.e. the compact long-living strongly coupled state of electromagnetic field and matter polarisation) is created, when two unipolar video pulses collide in a resonant medium of the frequency ω o (the pulses correspond to self-induced transparency solitons of the same amplitudes and opposite polarities). We studied for the first time multiple recording and erasing of a polariton cluster in a thin layer of a resonant medium (quantum dots) placed on the mirror surface. We showed that dynamics of the medium population difference N ( x , t ) is analogous to the operation of a D-trigger of the pulse rate 60 000 GHz and higher. We found such a method of the polariton cluster recording and erasing that excludes the accumulation of erasing errors. Therefore, the total duration of the optical D-trigger operation time can strongly exceed the phase relaxation time T 2 .

Abstract We study the interaction of two counterpropagating unipolar video pulses of electromagnetic radiation in a dense resonant two-level medium. The pulse durations are less than one oscillation period of an atomic transition. We show that a polariton cluster (i.e. the compact long-living strongly coupled state of electromagnetic field and matter polarization) is created, when two unipolar pulses collide in a resonant medium of the frequency ω0 (the pulses correspond to self-induced transparency solitons of the same amplitudes and opposite polarities). We have studied for the first time the conditions of maximal excitation of a resonant polarization in the polariton cluster volume. We show that there exist optimal durations and amplitudes of the recording pulses. We studied the processes of double and multiple recording and erasing of an optical memory cell in a thin layer of a resonant medium (quantum dots). We demonstrated that the pulse rate of the recording-erasing pulses can reach 60 000 GHz and higher, which happens under the coherent regime of the interaction between the electromagnetic field and polarization of the medium.

Dark-State Polaritons in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Michael Fleischhauer, Mikhail D. Lukin

We identify form-stable coupled excitations of light and matter ("dark-state polaritons") associated with the propagation of quantum fields in electromagnetically induced transparency. The properties of dark-state polaritons such as the group velocity are determined by the mixing angle between light and matter components and can be controlled by an external coherent field as the pulse propagates. In particular, light pulses can be decelerated and "trapped" in which case their shape and quantum state are mapped onto metastable collective states of matter. Possible applications of this reversible coherent-control technique are discussed.

Quantum memory for photons: Dark-state polaritons

Michael Fleischhauer, Mikhail D. Lukin

An ideal and reversible transfer technique for the quantum state between light and metastable collective states of matter is presented and analyzed in detail. The method is based on the control of photon propagation in coherently driven three-level atomic media, in which the group velocity is adiabatically reduced to zero. Form-stable coupled excitations of light and matter (``dark-state polaritons'') associated with the propagation of quantum fields in electromagnetically induced transparency are identified, their basic properties discussed and their application for quantum memories for light analyzed.

Coherent optics and localized light

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov

Interplay between the effects of coherent radiation and localization of light is analysed. A system of two–level atoms is placed in a medium interacting with electromagnetic field. The matter–light interaction can result in the appearance of a band gap in the spectrum of polariton states. If an atom with a resonance frequency inside the gap is incorporated into such a medium, the atomic spontaneous emission is suppressed, which is termed the localization of light. However, a system of resonance atoms inside the gap can radiate due to their coherent interactions. The peculiarity of the coherent radiation by a system of atoms, under the localization of light for a single atom, is studied. 1 1 Localization of Light In some cases a medium may possess an electromagnetic band gap where a severe depressions of the photon density of states occurs. Interaction-Induced Transparency for Strong-Coupling Polaritons

Johannes Lang, Darrick E. Chang, Francesco Piazza

The propagation of light in strongly coupled atomic media takes place through the formation of polaritons-hybrid quasiparticles resulting from a superposition of an atomic and a photonic excitation. Here we consider the propagation under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency and show that a novel many-body phenomenon can appear due to strong, dissipative interactions between the polaritons. Upon increasing the photon-pump strength, we find a first-order transition between an opaque phase with strongly broadened polaritons and a transparent phase where a long-lived polariton branch with highly tunable occupation emerges. Across this nonequilibrium phase transition, the transparency window is reconstructed via nonlinear interference effects induced by the dissipative polariton interactions. Our predictions are based on a systematic diagrammatic expansion of the nonequilibrium Dyson equations which can be controlled, even in the nonperturbative regime of large single-atom cooperativities, provided the polariton interactions are sufficiently long-ranged. Such a regime can be reached in photonic crystal waveguides thanks to the tunability of interactions, allowing us to observe the interaction-induced transparency transition even at low polariton densities.
