Abstract

According to the development of slow light and nanotechnology, a novel optical fiber doped with nano material as InP is manufactured and introduced into the SBS slow light system, serving as the nonlinear medium of SBS process. Numerical simulations and experimental discussions are performed to validate our method. The results show a considerable time delay of ~738 ps and an amplification of the optical light can be achieved through this novel optical fiber.

As the key of these all optical techniques which would be widely used in the future optical fiber communication, the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) slow light draws a great of attention and shows several advantages over other slow light methods. With recent growth of nano-technology, researchers are hoping to improve the nonlinearity of the optical fiber by using the nano-technology. According to this current situation, a numerical model of the SBS slow light and three typical experiments are discussed. Theoretical analysis and experiment performance of slow-light based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS)

Hongyan Zhou, Kun Hua Zhong, Ru Zhang +1 more

Slow light technology will play a key role in future all-optical communication. The slow-light technology based on stimulated Brillouin scattering has become a research highlight because of its additional advantages, such as compatibility of the devices with existing telecommunication systems, room-temperature operation, and tunable at arbitrary wavelengths. According to the propagation of a cw pulse through a Brillouin fiber amplifier, whose frequency is near the Stokes resonance, via three-wave coupling equations, both pump depletion and fiber losses taken into consideration, the principle of how slow-light effect based on stimulated Brillouin scattering produced and the mathematical expression of time delay are strictly deduced. A delay of 8 ns is obtained when the input Stokes pulse is 200ns and the SBS (stimulated Brillouin scattering) gain G is ~18 in our designed experiment of SBS slow-light system. Then the extent of transformation from pump waves to Stokes waves is measured using MATLAB numerical simulation according to the experiment dates, based on the relation between output pump light power and input pump light power and also the relation between output Stokes light power and input pump light power. And the relation between the input light power and propagation distance is discussed as well. Finally the relation between slow light pulse delay and SBS gain is also obtained.

A Review of Slow- and Fast-Light Based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Future Optical Communication Networks

Ronny Henker, Andrzej Wiatrek, Kai-Uwe Lauterbach +4 more

Slow- and Fast-Light has been investigated during the last years as a powerful tool to reduce and increase the group velocity of light pulses by light. It has enjoyed much recent interest because of the practical applications for telecommunication and information systems. Among these are optical signal processing, radio frequency-photonics, nonlinear optics and time domain spectroscopy. Furthermore, it can be seen as a key technology for optical delay lines, buffers, equalizers and synchronizers in packet switched networks. For a realization, there are different methods and material systems possible. Among them the nonlinear effect of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is of special interest. This article gives an overview about the fundamentals and some experimental results of the Slow- and Fast-Light effect based on the SBS in optical fibers.

Nearly transparent SBS slow light in an optical fiber

Zhaoming Zhu, Daniel J. Gauthier

Slow-light delay via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers is usually achieved with delay-dependent amplification that degrades system performance. To address this problem, we propose a SBS slow-light method that makes use of two widely separated anti-Stokes absorption resonances, and achieve nearly transparent slow light in an optical fiber. We demonstrate the method in a highly nonlinear optical fiber, and achieve a slow-light bandwidth of approximately 150 MHz and a relative of delay of approximately 0.3 for approximately 9-ns pulses with a signal attenuation of approximately 4.8 dB.

Slow and Fast-Light in optical fibers ’ An overview

Ronny Henker, Thomas Schneider, Kai-Uwe Lauterbach +3 more

Slow- and fast-light is the control of the velocity of light in a medium by light. As a fascinating new field in physics there is a fundamental interest on this effect on the one side, but on the other side there exist a lot of practical applications for telecommunication and information systems. Among these are optical signal processing, the radio frequency-photonics, nonlinear optics and spectroscopy in time domain. Furthermore, the slow- and fast-light effect can be seen as a key technology for optical delay lines, buffers, equalizers and synchronizers in packed switched networks. To realize the effect there are different methods and material systems possible. Beside these especially the nonlinear effect of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is of special interest because it has several advantages. This article gives an overview about the fundamentals and limits of the slow-and fast-light effect in general and based on the SBS in optical fibers. Some experimental results which were achieved so far are shown.
