Molecular Physics

A new classical method for dynamical calculation in molecular systems

Abstract

The classical and quantum dynamics of a bound particle in an electromagnetic field are analysed. Classical theory is formulated so that the uncertainty principle is taken into account. Very good agreement with quantum theory is found for all the parameters investigated.

The principles of quantum theory

Peter Joshua Atkins, George Ratcliffe, Mark R. Wormald +1 more

This chapter lays out the principles of quantum theory. Quantum theory emerged when experimental results on matter and radiation were found to diverge from the predictions of classical mechanics. It was found that particles had the properties of waves, and that waves had the properties of particles. That duality is taken into account by the Schrödinger equation and the introduction of a wavefunction. One of the great upsets of classical physics is embodied in the uncertainty principle, which expresses the impossibility of the simultaneous specification of certain pairs of properties. One consequence of duality is the extension of microscopy and diffraction to beyond the electromagnetic spectrum.

Two-photon electron transfer between quantum dots

Askhat M Basharov, S. A. Dubovis

The effective Hamiltonian of a system describing electrons of two quantum dots in a two-frequency electromagnetic field upon Raman resonance of the field with a pair of the electronic levels of different dots is obtained by the method of equivalent transformation. The states of the continuous spectrum (conduction bands) are correctly taken into account. The role of the terms describing the dynamic Stark effect in a two-body system is analysed. A new mechanism of particle transfer between quantum wells in a non-resonance electromagnetic field is proposed, which is free from disadvantages of previous models.

Diffusion ionization of the Rydberg diatomic quasi-molecular complex formed upon collisions of rubidium atoms

Nikolai N. Bezuglov, V. M. Borodin, V. B. Grushevskii +4 more

The problem of impact ionization of two Rb atoms, one of which belongs to the Rydberg P series and the other of which is in the ground state, is studied and solved with the use of the methods of stochastic dynamics for description of the path instability of a Rydberg electron in a collision diatomic complex. The actual potential of the atomic framework was taken into account in terms of the single-channel quantum-defect method, whose accuracy was demonstrated on the example of determination of the photoionization cross sections in the quasi-classical approximation. A representation of the effective average lifetime of an external electron in the bound state that takes into account both the diffusion migration within the Coulomb crowding of the potential energy curves for the quasi-molecular complex and the direct quantum autoionization is obtained in analytical form. It is shown that the rate constants of diffusion collisional ionization calculated by us are in good agreement with the experimental data.
