FINITE-SIZE CORRECTIONS TO CORRELATION FUNCTION AND SUSCEPTIBILITY IN 2D ISING MODEL

Abstract

Transfer matrix calculations of the critical two-point correlation function in 2D Ising model on a finite-size [Formula: see text] lattice with periodic boundaries along 〈11〉 direction are extended to L = 21. A refined analysis of the correlation function in 〈10〉 crystallographic direction at the distance r = L indicates the existence of a nontrivial finite-size correction of a very small amplitude with correction-to-scaling exponent ω < 2 in agreement with our foregoing study for L ≤ 20. Here we provide an additional evidence and show that amplitude a of the multiplicative correction term 1 + aL-ωis about -3.5·10-8if ω = 1/4 (the expected value). We calculate also the susceptibility for L ≤ 18 in order to compare our numerical estimates for the constant background contribution with the known very precise value and to look for possible nontrivial corrections to scaling. The numerical analysis reveals a perfect agreement for the background term, as well as shows that the nontrivial correction term, detected by our analysis in the correlation function, likely cancels in the susceptibility.

Transfer matrix and Monte Carlo tests of critical exponents in lattice models

J. Kaupužs

The corrections to finite-size scaling in the critical two-point correlation function G(r) of 2D Ising model on a square lattice have been studied numerically by means of exact transfer-matrix algorithms. The systems of square geometry with periodic boundaries oriented either along <10> or along <11> direction have been considered, including up to 800 spins. The calculation of G(r) at a distance r equal to the half of the system size L shows the existence of an amplitude correction proportional to 1/L^2. A nontrivial correction proportional to 1/L^0.25 of a very small magnitude also has been detected in agreement with predictions of our recently developed GFD (grouping of Feynman diagrams) theory. A refined analysis of the recent MC data for 3D Ising, phi^4, and XY lattice models has been performed. It includes an analysis of the partition function zeros of 3D Ising model, an estimation of the correction-to-scaling exponent omega from the Binder cumulant data near criticality, as well as a study of the effective critical exponent eta and the effective amplitudes in the asymptotic expansion of susceptibility at the critical point. In all cases a refined analysis is consistent with our (GFD) asymptotic values of the critical exponents (nu=2/3, omega=1/2, eta=1/8 for 3D Ising model and omega=5/9 for 3D XY model), while the actually accepted "conventional" exponents are, in fact, effective exponents which are valid for approximation of the finite--size scaling behavior of not too large systems.

Transfer Matrix Study of Finite-size Corrections in the 2D Ising Model

J. Kaupužs

Abstract Effective exact transfer matrix algorithms have been developed to compute the two-point correlation function G(r) of the 2D Ising model on a square finite size lattice. Systems including up to 800 spins have been considered and corrections to the finite-size scaling at the critical point have been analysed. As a new result, we have found that the correlation function has a nontrivial amplitude correction of a very small magnitude.

Transfer matrix and Monte Carlo tests of critical exponents in Ising model

J. Kaupužs

The corrections to finite-size scaling in the critical two-point correlation function G(r) of 2D Ising model on a square lattice have been studied numerically by means of exact transfer-matrix algorithms. The systems have been considered, including up to 800 spins. The calculation of G(r) at a distance r equal to the half of the system size L shows the existence of an amplitude correction proportional to 1/L^2. A nontrivial correction ~1/L^0.25 of a very small magnitude also has been detected, as it can be expected from our recently developed GFD (grouping of Feynman diagrams) theory. Monte Carlo simulations of the squared magnetization of 3D Ising model have been performed by Wolff's algorithm in the range of the reduced temperatures t =< 0.000086 and system sizes L =< 410. The effective critical exponent beta_eff(t) tends to increase above the currently accepted numerical values. The critical coupling K_c=0.22165386(51) has been extracted from the Binder cumulant data within 96 =< L =< 384. The critical exponent 1/nu, estimated from the finite-size scaling of the derivatives of the Binder cumulant, tends to decrease slightly below the RG value 1.587 for the largest system sizes. The finite-size scaling of accurately simulated maximal values of the specific heat C_v in 3D Ising model confirms a logarithmic rather than power-like critical singularity of C_v.

Critical finite-size-scaling amplitudes of a fully anisotropic three-dimensional Ising model

M. A. Yurishchev

A fully anisotropic simple-cubic Ising lattice in the geometry of periodic cylinders n\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}n\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\ensuremath{\infty} is investigated by the transfer-matrix finite-size-scaling method. In addition to the previously obtained critical amplitudes of the inverse correlation lengths and singular part of the free energy [M. A. Yurishchev, Phys. Rev. B 50, 13 533 (1994)], the amplitudes of the usual (``linear'') and nonlinear susceptibilities and the amplitude of the second derivative of the spin-spin inverse correlation length with respect to the external field are calculated. The behavior of critical amplitude combinations (which, in accordance with the Privman-Fisher equations, do not contain in their composition the nonuniversal metric coefficients and geometry prefactor) are studied as a function of the interaction anisotropy parameters. A universality domain for the amplitude ratios is found in the quasi-one-dimensional regime of interactions in the system. In the case of a fully isotropic three-dimensional Ising model for which the high precision values of the critical coupling and critical-point free energy are available, improved estimates are obtained for the following four universal quantities: (1) the amplitude of spin-spin inverse correlation length, (2) the amplitude of singular part of the free energy, (3) the ratio of the amplitude of a second derivative of the spin-spin inverse correlation length with respect to the external field to the usual susceptibility amplitude, and (4) the ratio of the nonlinear susceptibility amplitude to the square of the linear susceptibility amplitude (i.e., for the finite-size counterpart of the four-point renormalized coupling constant).

Finite-size scaling study of the two-dimensional Ising spin glass

David A. Huse, I. Morgenstern

We have calculated finite-size correlation lengths for strips of the square-lattice Ising spin glass using the transfer-matrix method. In order to minimize sampling errors we study strip lengths up to 5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{6}$ lattice spacings. A phenomenological renormalization-group analysis indicates that there are strong corrections to simple power-law scaling near the zero-temperature critical point, as is to be expected near a lower critical dimension. We examine models with Gaussian, exp(-${J}^{2}$/2), and exponential, exp(-\ensuremath{\Vert}J\ensuremath{\Vert}), distributions of couplings; the Gaussian distribution shows stronger finite-size corrections. The correlation-length exponent is estimated to be \ensuremath{\nu}=4.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5, although we do not want to rule out the possibility that \ensuremath{\nu} is significantly larger than this.

Correlation function of the two-dimensional Ising model on a finite lattice. II

A. I. Bugrij, O. Lisovyy

We calculate the two-point correlation function and magnetic susceptibility in the anisotropic 2D Ising model on a lattice with one infinite and the other finite dimension, along which periodic boundary conditions are imposed. Using exact expressions for a part of lattice form factors, we propose the formulas for arbitrary spin matrix elements, thus providing a possibility to compute all multipoint correlation functions in the anisotropic Ising model on cylindrical and toroidal lattices. The scaling limit of the corresponding expressions is also analyzed.
