The Dynamical Lorentz Shift in an Extended Optically Dense Superradiant Amplifier

Abstract

We compute the spectral distributions of the transmitted and reflected signals from an extended optically dense superradiant amplifier. We show that, if the amplifier length is in the neighborhood of an integer multiple of the resonance transition half-wavelength, the frequency shift in the spectral distributions of the transmitted and reflected signals are modified by the Dynamical Lorentz Shift. The broken spatial inversion symmetry, manifested through an asymmetrical distribution of the population difference with respect to a spatial inversion around the midpoint of the sample, is shown to be at the origin of this spectral asymmetry in these so-called asymmetrical transition domains.

Transmitted and reflected wave generation in induced superradiance

А. И. Зайцев, D. A. Mosunov, Evgeni D. Trifonov

We investigate the different regimes of an optically dense extended two-level system. Taking into account the atomic concentration profile we compute both the transmitted and reflected outputs as a function of the length of a system. We show that the boundary structure essentially influence on the ratio of the transmitted and the reflected wave intensities.

On the Asymmetric Generation of a Superradiant Laser with a Symmetric Low-Q Cavity

Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Vladimir A. Kukushkin, Sergey V. Tarasov +2 more

Abstract On the basis of numerical solution to the Maxwell–Bloch equations within the one-dimensional two-level model of a superradiant laser with a symmetric cavity in which the photon lifetime is less than the incoherent relaxation time of the optical-dipole oscillations of active centers, the phenomenon of the spontaneous asymmetric generation of counter-propagating waves under continuous uniform pumping of the active medium is revealed. It is shown that the observed symmetry breaking of the spatial profiles of counter-propagating waves of the electromagnetic field and, the polarization and inversion of the population of active-medium levels in the case of a small inhomogeneous broadening of the spectral line of its working transition occurs due to the asymmetric half-wave nonlinear grating of inversion of the energy-level population produced by these waves.

On the basis of numerical solution to the Maxwell-Bloch equations within an one-dimensional two-level model of a superradiant laser with a symmetric cavity where a photon lifetime is less than an incoherent relaxation time of the optical dipole oscillations of active centers, we find that a spontaneous asymmetric generation of the counter-propagating waves is possible under a continuous homogeneous pumping of an active medium. We show that such a phenomenon of a symmetry breaking of the spatial profiles of the counter-propagating waves of an electromagnetic field as well as the polarization and population inversion of an active medium in the considered case of a weak inhomogeneous broadening of an operating transition is caused by an asymmetric half-wavelength nonlinear grating of the population inversion of the transition’s energy levels which is produced by these waves.

Mechanism of Rabi-excitation of discrete modes outside the spectral line of a superradiant laser

E. R. Kocharovskaya, Vl. V. Kocharovsky

By means of numerical modeling of nonlinear and analytical solution of linearized Maxwell-Bloch equations, we find an intriguing regime of a superradiant laser with a symmetric low-Q Fabry-Perot cavity equipped with a distributed feedback of counter-propagating waves. We find that, in a wide range of parameters, there is lasing of a strongly-asymmetric self-modulated powerful polariton mode accompanied by excitation of several almost symmetric weak polariton or electromagnetic modes. The frequency of the powerful mode is approximately coincides with a center of the laser spectral line, and the frequencies of the weak modes are outside the spectral line of an active medium. We show that such a lasing takes place due to formation of a self-consistent inhomogeneous asymmetric grating of population inversion of active centers that provides undamped Rabi oscillations of the population inversion and dipole moments of centers. The grating makes the powerful ‘central’ mode strongly asymmetric, and the Rabi oscillations of active centers excite the weak ‘sideband’ modes due to the quadratic resonant nonlinearity of the two-level active medium.

Gain-dispersion coupling induced by transient light shifts in an atomic medium

Jean-Christophe Delagnes, M. A. Bouchène

A weak resonant femtosecond pulse propagates through an optically thick atomic medium whose properties have been modified by a strong nonresonant ultrashort pulse. We study the energy redistribution between the spectral components of the weak resonant pulse using both experimental and theoretical methods. The transmitted spectrum exhibits an asymmetric feature that reveals an important gain-dispersion coupling. For light shifts that perturb slightly the propagation of the weak resonant pulse, this asymmetry maps out the asymptotic part of the linear susceptibility.
