Abstract

We investigate the different regimes of an optically dense extended two-level system. Taking into account the atomic concentration profile we compute both the transmitted and reflected outputs as a function of the length of a system. We show that the boundary structure essentially influence on the ratio of the transmitted and the reflected wave intensities.

Regimes of generation of reflected and transmitted waves in induced superradiance are studied. It is shown that a back wave appears due to reflection from boundaries of the inversion region.

Regimes of generation of transmitted and reflected waves in induced superradiance

A. A. Bogdanov, А. И. Зайцев

The generation of reflected and transmitted waves in induced superradiance is studied. The predominance of one of the waves is shown to be possible within a narrow range of system lengths and to be a result of the transient nature of reflection and wave formation in the medium. This effect is determined by periodic cooperative exchange between the forward and backward waves at the linear stage of the process.

Regime of total predominance of the transmitted wave in induced superradiance

A. A. Bogdanov, А. И. Зайцев

Generation of reflected and transmitted waves in induced superradiance is studied. It is shown that an increase in the initiating pulse area or the system length can inhibit the development of the periodic cooperative exchange between the forward and backward waves in the sample. In this case, the transmitted wave will predominate in the superradiance pulse.

Coherent exchange between the forward and backward waves in induced superradiance

A. A. Bogdanov, А. И. Зайцев

The generation of reflected and transmitted waves in induced superradiance is investigated. It is demonstrated that the exponential increase in the amplitude of the total field at the linear stage of the process may be accompanied by a periodic coherent exchange between the forward and backward waves in a sample. Transition to the nonlinear stage in a certain phase of this exchange determines the predominance of the transmitted or reflected wave in the pulse. The influence of the area of the initiating pulse and the sample length is considered.

Coherent reflection as superradiation from the boundary of a resonant medium

M. G. Benedict, Evgenii Dmitrievich Trifonov

The reflection of short optical pulses from the boundary of a resonant medium is investigated theoretically by the coupled system of the Maxwell and optical Bloch equations. In order to describe the reflected wave, the slowly-varying-envelope approximation in space is not exploited. The coherent reflection is shown to be in connection with Dicke superradiance. It takes place if the relaxation time of the polarization is longer than the superradiation time of the atoms in an optically thin boundary layer of the medium. That is why much of the relevant information can be obtained already in the thin-medium limit, which is considered separately. The conditions of strong reflection from an extended medium are similar to the ones found for a thin sample. The transition into the incoherent and stationary regime is discussed.

Interaction of short optical pulses with an inverted thin film consisting of two-level atoms

A. M. Samson, Yu. A. Logvin, Sergei I. Turovets

Numerical and analytic investigations are made of the reflection and propagation of short optical pulses through an inverted thin film consisting of two-level atoms. An analysis is made of cases where pulses having rectangular, hyperbolic-secant, and Gaussian profiles are incident normally on a thin film. It is shown that, as a result of the initial inversion of the atoms, induced superradiance occurs. The dependences of the parameters of the reflected and transmitted pulses on the characteristics of the incident pulse are determined.
