From a non-Abelian geometric phase to quantum holonomies for a neutral particle with permanent electric dipole moment

K. Bakke

Abstract By dealing with an elastic medium with a disclination, we search for the influence of the disclination topology on a geometric quantum phase yielded by the interaction of a nonuniform magnetic field with the permanent electric dipole moment of a neutral particle. This magnetic field is produced by a nonuniform electric current density. Further, we explore the non-Abelian nature of the geometric quantum phase in search of quantum holonomies for this neutral particle system and discuss a possible application to the geometric quantum computation.

Electric dipole moments of lithium atoms in Rydberg states

Hui-Jie Dong, Ke-Shu Huang, Changyong Li +3 more

Recently, the diverse properties of Rydberg atoms, which probably arise from its large electric dipole moment (EDM), have been explored. In this paper, we report electric dipole moments along with Stark energies and charge densities of lithium Rydberg states in the presence of electric fields, calculated by matrix diagonalization. Huge electric dipole moments are discovered. In order to check the validity of the EDMs, we also use these electric dipole moments to calculate the Stark energies by numerical integration. The results agree with those calculated by matrix diagonalization.

Quantum sensing of the electron electric dipole moment using ultracold entangled Fr atoms

T. Aoki, R Sreekantham, B. K. Sahoo +27 more

Abstract We propose a method to measure the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) using ultracold entangled francium (Fr) atoms trapped in an optical lattice, yielding an uncertainty below the standard quantum limit. Among the alkali atoms, Fr offers the largest enhancement factor to the eEDM. With a Fr based experiment, quantum sensing using quantum entangled states could enable a search for the eEDM at a level below 10−30 ecm. We estimate statistical and systematic errors attached to the proposed measurement scheme based on this quantum sensing technique. A successful quantum sensing of the eEDM could enable the exploration of new physics beyond the standard model of particle physics.
