Voltage locking between superconducting weak links via impedance coupling

Dai Yuan-Dong, Y. H. Kao

Frequency locking effects in two interacting Josephson junctions are investigated. The junctions are described in the usual resistively-shunted-junction (RSJ) model and coupling between junctions is provided by a resonant circuit. The system can be used to simulate interactions between superconducting weak links in a resonant cavity or via a general impedance shunt. Various types of v-i curves in the voltage locking region are obtained in this calculation by using a first harmonic approximation in the high-frequency regime. Stability of order parameter phase oscillations for two identical junctions in the voltage-locked region is examined. We also show that dissimilar junctions can be synchronized in a resonant cavity using a common series bias current.

Novel microwave-induced steps of intrinsic Josephson junctions in mesa-shaped BSCCO single crystals

Akinobu Irie, Masahiro Iwama, Gin-ichiro Oya

We have been investigated the current - voltage characteristics of naturally stacked intrinsic Josephson junctions in mesa-shaped single crystals, having dimensions in the ab plane larger than the Josephson penetration depth, without and with microwave irradiations. In the absence of microwave irradiation, a gaplike feature and multiple resistive branches that imply SIS series junctions were observed in the current - voltage characteristic. Under appropriate conditions of microwave irradiation, we successfully observed striking microwave-induced subharmonic steps, caused by the phase-locked oscillation of a coupled multifluxon, with nearly equal voltage separations on the I - V characteristics of a mesa in the cavity resonant mode.

Mutual phase-locking of ten YBa2Cu3O7 step-edge Josephson junctions up to 45 K

Gerhard Kunkel, Ronald H. Ono

We have developed a microwave circuit using ten parallel-biased high-temperature superconductor Josephson junctions to demonstrate phase-locking for applications such as oscillators, mixers, and detectors. The basic cell consists of two Josephson junctions enclosed in a microstrip resonator, which provides voltage-locking and low dynamic resistance in the current–voltage characteristic. Partial synchronization of the ten junctions was observed up to 45 K and up to 1 THz. The implications of this design for power and radiation linewidth will be discussed.
