Abstract

It is shown theoretically and experimentally that Raman scattering at a high rate of excitation is characterized by a new feature. This is the threshold appearance of a cooperative frequency shift of the anti-Stokes components resulting from the cooperative nature of the Raman scattering.

Doppler-free resonances of the second-order Raman scattering

V. A. Ulybin

An analysis is made of the possibility of observation of Raman scattering resonances free of the influence of the Doppler effect. Such Doppler-free resonances result from the excitation of a standing wave of Raman vibrations in a gas by two standing optical waves differing in frequency by half the Raman frequency. Complete compensation of the Doppler shifts occurs as a result of simultaneous interaction of atomic particles with two pairs of counterpropagating waves. Scattering of traveling pump waves by a standing wave of Raman vibrations in the fifth order with respect to the field gives rise to resonances in the radiation at the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies. Coherent scattering is observed in the presence of dispersion. A resonance in the number of particles excited to the upper level of a Raman transition appears in the eighth order in the field. The expressions obtained are applied to the specific example of neon.

Near Threshold Behavior of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in an Off-Axis Resonator

Toshio Ito, Hiroshi Takuma

Strong interference of the first Stokes Raman radiation with the stimulated Brillouin radiation has been observed in an off-axis resonator: Brillouin gain decreases appreciably by the presence of the Raman radiation in a medium such as CS2, in which the Raman and Brillouin scatterings can be stimulated simultaneously. Such a type of interference can be explained as the Raman scattering of the Brillouin photons stimulated by the first Stokes Raman photons. A classical theory has shown a quantitative agreement with the experiment. The anti-Stokes Brillouin components have not been observed even though the laser excitation was intense enough to allow the observation of the multiple Stokes components which were excited directly in the off-axis resonator without the feed-back effect of the laser as an amplifier.

Correlation between Stokes and anti-Stokes radiation and the effect of phase modulation in stimulated Raman scattering of ultrashort pulses in a dispersive medium

Joachım Herrmann

A calculation is made of the intensity of the Stokes radiation in the stimulated Raman scattering of ultrashort light pulses in a dispersive medium employing the asymptotic approximation for arbitrary modulation of the amplitude and phase of the pump pulse. Particular attention was paid to the effect of phase modulation on the stimulated Raman scattering. Calculations were also made of the intensity of the anti-Stokes component in the scattering of an ultrashort pulse in a dispersive medium and of the optimal angle for the observation of the anti-Stokes rings.

A new method for upconversion of monochromatic radiation

Howard C. Volkin

Frequency upconversion by means of stimulated Raman scattering is examined. A monochromatic beam is scattered into the anti-Stokes wave in a medium with an inverted population of the pair of energy levels involved. A method is proposed in which the beam from a laser tuned to the desired anti-Stokes frequency provides an initial stimulating wave of sufficient intensity to ensure the desired Raman scattering dominates competitive processes.
