Abstract

We measure the phase shift induced by the optical Kerr effect between the two orthogonally polarized states of a birefringent single-mode fiber. The associated noise, which can arise whenever amplitude fluctuations of the source are present, is discussed.

Intensity noise-driven nonlinear fiber polarization scrambler

Massimiliano Guasoni, Julien Fatome, Stefan W. Wabnitz

We propose and analyze a novel all-optical fiber polarization scrambler based on the transfer (via the Kerr effect) of the intensity fluctuations of an incoherent pump beam into polarization fluctuations of a frequency-shifted signal beam, copropagating in a randomly birefringent telecom fiber. Optimal signal polarization scrambling results whenever the input signal and pump beams have nearly orthogonal states of polarization. The nonlinear polarization scrambler may operate on either cw or high-bit-rate pulsed signals.

Classical Decoherence Modeling of Mixed Polarization States in Birefringent Nonlinear Single-Mode Fibers

N. Lozano-Crisóstomo, M. A. González-Galicia, J. C. García-Melgarejo +1 more

In a recent study, N. Matsuda et al. [1] experimentally demonstrated the optical Kerr effect at the single photon level in optical fibers. This achievement strongly supports the feasibility of implementing optical quantum information processing (OQIP) based on the Kerr nonlinearity in optical fibers. Nevertheless, decoherence introduces significant techno logical limitations to the realization of OQIP in such systems. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of decoherence is essential to develop practical mitigation strategies. In the present work, we examine the loss of phase coherence, called classical decoherence, through a two-step process applied within each segment of a concatenated birefringent nonlinear single-mode optical fibers (BNLOFs). This investigation serves as a preliminary step toward establishing the foundational knowledge required for addressing quantum decoherence in BNLOFs. An analytical model describing classical decoherence of mixed polarization states in BNLOFs is developed, providing a classical analogue to the quantum decoherence phenomenon.

Measurement of the cross-Kerr nonlinearity induced by a single-photon-level coherent pulse in a photonic crystal fiber

Nobuyuki Matsuda, Ryōsuke Shimizu, Yasuyoshi Mitsumori +3 more

We demonstrate the first observation of the cross‐Kerr nonlinearity induced by a single‐photon‐level coherent optical pulse in a photonic crystal fiber. Taking advantage of large nonlinearity and managed dispersion of the optical fiber, we have successfully measured very small (10−7) conditional phase shifts.

Quantum light- polarization effects in nonlinear fiber

Richard Horák

Nonlinear interaction due to Kerr effect between two linearly polarized modes in a single mode optical fiber and its various manifestations have been investigated very intensively (see e.g. [1]), solely using the classical treatment. To describe nonclassical effects it is necessary to use the methods of quantum optics.
