Photon-counting statistics of squeezed states in collective resonance fluorescence

Abstract

The photon-counting statistics of squeezed states in collective time-dependent resonance fluorescence is calculated for the homodyne detection technique. The secular approximation is applied to obtain analytical expressions for the photon-counting distribution produced by homodyning the fluorescent field and coherent radiation. Squeezing is shown to appear only in the transient regime of resonance fluorescence. The time location of squeezing is independent of the number of atoms, N, but squeezing increases with increasing N. Moreover, squeezing occurs only for a judicious choice of the phase of the local oscillator and occurs over long counting times T. The time interval T is strongly dependent on the initial atomic population. If initially all atoms are in their excited states, squeezing appears with a delay twice as long as that for initially nonexcited atoms.

Squeezed states in N-atom time-dependent resonance fluorescence

Z. Ficek, R. Tanaś, S. Kielich

The dependence of squeezing on the number of atoms is discussed in the time-dependent collective resonance fluorescence of N two-level atoms, coherently driven by a strong resonant laser field. It is shown that, for strong driving field, squeezing appears only in the transient regime of resonance fluorescence. The location of squeezing in time is independent of the number of atoms and the initial atomic populations. It is found that despite the reduction in the amount of squeezing per single atom, squeezing increases in the whole resonance fluorescence field as the number of atoms increases, and attains its maximal value for moderate N. Moreover, the maximal value of squeezing is dependent on the intensity of the driving field. As the latter increases, the maximum of squeezing increases and shifts towards larger numbers of atoms. For a very large number of atoms, however, squeezing is altogether removed.

Squeezing in cooperative resonance fluorescence

Q. V. Lawande, S. V. Lawande

Cooperative effects on squeezing in resonance fluorescence from a finite number N of atoms are examined. Analytical expressions for the spectrum of squeezing and a quantity Q(T) related to the photon-counting statistics of the squeezed states are presented for N=1 and 2. These expressions are obtained by invoking the high-field approximation of the relevant master equation. The analytical results are supplemented by the numerical solutions of the exact master equation for N\ensuremath{\le}10. It is shown that for intense fields or large detunings, squeezing in resonance fluorescence is predominantly due to the quantum nature of the sidebands of the Mollow triplet. As a manifestation of cooperative effects, squeezing present in the total as well as the sideband radiation increases with the number of atoms. This is further confirmed from the behavior of the photon-statistics function Q(T).

Photon-counting statistics of squeezed states in resonance fluorescence

P. Anantha Lakshmi, G. S. Agarwal

The properties of the photon-counting distribution, for arbitrary intervals, produced by a mixture of coherent radiation and the radiation scattered by a strongly pumped two-level atom are calculated. Such properties reflect in an important way on the squeezing characteristics and the anomalous correlators of the scattered radiation.

The role of quantum jumps in the squeezing of resonance fluorescence from short-lived and long-lived atoms

Samir Bali

Phase-sensitive squeezing in the resonance fluorescence of two-level atoms, that are coherently driven by a near-resonant laser field in free space, was observed recently (Lu et al 1998 Phys. Rev .L ett. 81 3635). This was accomplished via homodyne detection at a phase near ±45 ◦ relative to the driving field for strong off-resonant excitation of ‘long-lived’ atoms (where th ea tomic lifetime far exceeded the laser–atom interaction time, meaning that relaxation effects could be ignored). On the other hand, traditional theoretical predictions of phase-sensitive squeezing in the resonance fluorescence from two-level atoms have emphasized in- and out-of-phase (i.e., 0 ◦ and 90 ◦ ) quadratures, and weak, on-resonant excitation of ‘short-lived’ atoms (where the observation time for laser–atom interaction fa re xceeded the natural atomic lifetime, meaning that relaxation effects dominate). Here, we calculate the probability of a delayed-coincidence detection in the interference field of a fluorescing dipole with a local oscillator (LO). We show that, despite the strikingly different conditions in which squeezing occurs in short- and long-lived atoms, squeezing in both cases can be shown to arise from a joint detection of two photons which are related by a quantum jump in the following way: the first photodetection precipitates a quantum jump of the atom to the ground state, and the second measures the mean amplitude of the fluorescent field subsequent to the quantum jump.

Photon-counting statistics of resonance fluorescence in a squeezed vacuum

B. N. Jagatap, S. V. Lawande

We discuss the consequences of the interaction of a broadband squeezed vacuum on the photon statistics of a coherently driven two-level atom. The statistics is described in terms of the Mandel function Q(T) and the probability P(n,T) of counting n photons in a time interval T. The phase-dependent decay in the squeezed vacuum is highlighted with these functions.

Photon-emission statistics in resonance fluorescence in a broadband squeezed vacuum

B. N. Jagatap, S. V. Lawande, Q. V. Lawande

We study the statistical properties of fluorescence from a coherently driven two-level atom placed in a broadband squeezed vacuum. The photon statistics are studied in terms of waiting time distribution or the delay function that describes the probability of emission of the very next photon following an emission of a photon initially. In an intense field limit, we analytically obtain the delay function for total emission and examine its phase-dependent behavior in a squeezed vacuum. We further analytically calculate the delay functions for the Mollow sidebands and use them to discuss the time correlation and successive emission of photons belonging to the left and right sidebands.
