Abstract

We describe a Parametric Down-Conversion source based on a low-power (< 1mW), narrowband (<1 MHz) fiber-coupled pump laser. The source is designed for two-photon absorption experiments related to quantum Zeno gates.

Development of a parametric down-conversion source for two-photon absorption experiments

T. B. Pittman

We describe a fiber-coupled parametric down-conversion (PDC) source designed for entanglement-enhanced twophoton absorption experiments. The key feature of the source is a narrowband (~1 MHz) UV diode pumping laser which can be tuned to match the energy of the 5S1/2 to 5D5/2 two-photon transition in Rubidium. The weak narrowband pumping beam is delivered to the PDC crystal through a single-mode fiber, which allows the source to be pre-aligned with a much stronger broadband auxiliary pump laser. The motivation for this PDC source lies within the context of Linear Optics Quantum Computing and Quantum Zeno Gates.

A versatile design for resonant guided-wave parametric down-conversion sources for quantum repeaters

Benjamin Brecht, Kai-Hong Luo, Harald Herrmann +1 more

Quantum repeaters—fundamental building blocks for long-distance quantum communication—are based on the interaction between photons and quantum memories. The photons must fulfil stringent requirements on central frequency, spectral bandwidth and purity in order for this interaction to be efficient. We present a design scheme for monolithically integrated resonant photon-pair sources based on parametric down-conversion in nonlinear waveguides, which facilitate the generation of such photons. We investigate the impact of different design parameters on the performance of our source. The generated photon spectral bandwidths can be varied between several tens of MHz up to around 1 GHz, facilitating an efficient coupling to different memories. The central frequency of the generated photons can be coarsely tuned by adjusting the pump frequency, poling period and sample temperature, and we identify stability requirements on the pump laser and sample temperature that can be readily fulfilled with off-the-shelf components. We find that our source is capable of generating high-purity photons over a wide range of photon bandwidths. Finally, the PDC emission can be frequency fine-tuned over several GHz by simultaneously adjusting the sample temperature and pump frequency. We conclude our study with demonstrating the adaptability of our source to different quantum memories.

Integrated, bright broadband, two-colour parametric down-conversion source

René Pollmann, Franz Roeder, Victor Quiring +4 more

Broadband quantum light is a vital resource for quantum metrology and spectroscopy applications such as quantum optical coherence tomography or entangled two photon absorption. For entangled two photon absorption in particular, very high photon flux combined with high time-frequency entanglement is crucial for observing a signal. So far these conditions could be met by using high power lasers driving degenerate, type 0 bulk-crystal spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) sources. This naturally limits the available wavelength ranges and precludes deterministic splitting of the generated output photons. In this work we demonstrate an integrated two-colour SPDC source utilising a group-velocity matched lithium niobate waveguide, reaching both exceptional brightness 1.52⋅10 6 pairssmWGHz and large bandwidth (7.8 THz FWHM) while pumped with a few mW of continuous wave (CW) laser light. By converting a narrow band pump to broadband pulses the created photon pairs show correlation times of Δ τ ≈ 120 fs while maintaining the narrow bandwidth Δ ω p ≪ 1 MHz of the CW pump light, yielding strong time-frequency entanglement. Furthermore our process can be adapted to a wide range of central wavelengths.

An Intense Continuous Source of Broadband Down-Converted Light

Avi Pe’er, Barak Dayan, Asher A. Friesem +1 more

The unique coherence and squeezing properties of high-power broadband down-converted light are very attractive for basic research in quantum optics as well as for applications. However, efficient sources did not exist until now, because of the need to stimulate the down-conversion process in a cavity, where mode competition narrows the spectrum drastically. Here we present the design of a low threshold optical parametric oscillator source that oscillates over the entire bandwidth allowed by phase matching. Two-photon absorption is exploited as a selective loss mechanism to suppress mode competition and achieve a broadband oscillation. The main theme of the design is to perform pairwise mode-locking of many frequency pairs, in direct equivalence to passive mode-locking of ultrashort pulsed lasers. We demonstrate the underlying principles of our design in an experiment with an oscillator cavity.

An Ultra-Broadband, Integrated Mid-Infrared Photon-Pair Source

Franz Roeder, René Pollmann, Abira Gnanavel +6 more

Broadband photon-pairs from a parametric down-conversion (PDC) source are essential for quantum optics experiments in the context of spectroscopy, quantum optical coherence tomography and entangled two-photon absorption [1]–[2]. Entangled two-photon absorption benefits from the ultra-short correlation time of a highly time-frequency entangled photon-pair which increases the absorption cross-section while in spectroscopy, broad spectral coverage in the mid-infrared allows one to enter the regime of life science applications.

We demonstrate an efficient fiber-coupled source of nondegenerate polarization-entangled photons at 795 and $1609\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ using bidirectionally pumped parametric down-conversion in bulk periodically poled lithium niobate. The single-mode source has an inferred bandwidth of $50\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GHz}$ and a spectral brightness of $300\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{pairs}∕(\mathrm{s}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GHz}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mW})$ of pump power that is suitable for narrowband applications such as entanglement transfer from photonic to atomic qubits.
