The Probability Density of the Output Phase of a Coherent Degenerate Parametric Amplifier in the Presence of White Gaussian Noise

Abstract

A degenerate parametric amplifier can be shown to have phase-regenerative effects on a phase-shift keyed (PSK) signal corrupted by noise. In this paper the stationary output-phase density is calculated when the input signal consists of a two-phase PSK signal and white Gaussian noise.

Spontaneous emission from saturated parametric amplifiers

Karsten K. Rottwitt, J. R. Ott, Henrik Steffensen +1 more

Noise performance of parametric amplifiers is typically calculated assuming un-depleted operation. However, in many applications especially when applied as regenerative amplifiers in systems based on phase shift keyed modulation schemes, this assumption is not valid. Here we show the impact on accumulated spontaneous emission for a parametric amplifier operated in saturation.

We experimentally investigate the phase squeezing properties of a phase-sensitive parametric amplifier by measuring the input and output signal phase with a coherent receiver. The reduction in phase variation is found to be proportional to the PSA gain.

Analysis on squeezing properties of degenerate parametric amplifier for quantum communication

Hidenori Koyano, Tomohiko Uyematsu, Norihiro Yoshida +1 more

Abstract In this paper, characteristics of degenerate parametric amplifiers are analyzed and are expected to be useful as a generator of a squeezed state or a noiseless amplifier for an optical wave. Especially, when a degenerate parametric amplifier is used as a noiseless amplifier or a squeezed‐state generator (squeezer), the depletion of the pumping light which has been neglected affects the quantum noise characteristic of the squeezed light. This effect is analyzed in this paper. Further, when the incident light does not satisfy the phase matching condition, the effect of this phase shift on the gain and quantum noise characteristics of the degenerate parametric amplifier is studied. On the other hand, when a degenerate parametric amplifier is used as a preamplifier for the receiving side of the communication system, the phase noise of the pumping light can be a cause of degradation of the communication system performance. The phase noise of the pumping light is classified as the phase shift and the phase fluctuation caused by the quantum noise and then the effects of these phase noises on the quantum noise characteristics of the squeezed light are analyzed. Further, in the BPSK optical coherent communication system, the effect of the phase noise on the bit error rate is analyzed. A quantitative evaluation is made to determine how small the phase noise of the pumping light should be in order not to degrade the error rate.

Input and output in damped quantum systems II Methods in non-white-noise situations and application to inhibition of atomic phase decays

Crispin W. Gardiner, Matthew J. Collett, A. S. Parkins

A near-white-noise input–output formalism is developed that does not require white-noise assumptions. In particular, correlation formulas for outputs are developed, which enables account to be taken of reflections of near-white-noise inputs. The methods are applied to the inhibition of atomic phase decays by squeezed light from a degenerate parametric amplifier incident upon a two-level atom, and modifications from previous work carried out in the extreme-white-noise limit are computed.

Output properties of parametric amplifiers in cavities

Matthew J. Collett, R. Loudon

The theory of a parametric amplifier in a cavity is given for both the degenerate and the nondegenerate modes of operation. Previous work on the degenerate case is extended to include the effects of a coherent input and to derive the degrees of coherence and photodetection statistics of the output. Analogous calculations are performed for the nondegenerate parametric amplifier, and particular attention is given to the effects of correlations between the light beams formed from the two frequency components. These are contrasted with the analogous effects for the parametric media in free space often used in experimental studies.
