Abstract

We observed a detuned slow light phenomenon based on electromagnetically induced transparency in (87)Rb D2 line composed of multiple excited-hyperfine states within a Doppler-broadened linewidth. The results show that the maximum group delay of a probe occurs at off-detuned two-photon resonance frequency. The observed detuned group delay is analyzed with numerical calculations for a probe pulse interacting with the neighboring excited-states-modified Doppler broadening atoms for a fixed coupling field. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical calculations.

Sub-Doppler linewidth with electromagnetically induced transparency in rubidium atoms

Yifu Zhu, T. N. Wasserlauf

We report the experimental observation of steady-state electromagnetically induced transparency and sub-Doppler linewidth in a Doppler-broadened \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type Rb atomic system formed on the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ ${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ transitions. The \ensuremath{\Lambda} system is coupled on one transition by a strong laser and probed on the other transition by a weak laser. The observed sub-Doppler linewidth decreases with the increasing detuning of the strong-coupling laser from the atomic transition frequency and is in good agreement with the theoretical calculations of G. Vemuri, G. S. Agarwal, and B. D. N. Rao [Phys. Rev. A 53, 2842 (1996)]. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Effects of neighboring transitions on the mechanisms of electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in an open degenerate multilevel system

Zeeshan Ali Safdar Jadoon, Heung‐Ryoul Noh, Jin‐Tae Kim

In this study, optical Bloch equations with and without neighboring hyperfine states near the degenerate two-level system (DTLS) in the challenging case of [Formula: see text]Rb D2 transition, which involves the Doppler broadening effect, are solved. The calculated spectra agree well with the experimental results obtained based on the coupling-probe scheme with orthogonal linear polarizations of the coupling and probe fields. The mechanisms of electromagnetically induced absorption (electromagnetically induced transparency) for the open [Formula: see text] and 3 transitions (open [Formula: see text] and 3 transitions) are determined to be the effect of the strong closed [Formula: see text] transition line (strong closed [Formula: see text] transition line); this finding is based on a comparison between the calculated absorption profiles of the DTLS without neighboring states and those of all levels with neighboring states, depending on the coupling and probe power ratios. Furthermore, based on the aforementioned comparison, the crucial factors that enhance or reduce the coherence effects and lead to the transformation between electromagnetically induced absorption and electromagnetically induced transparency, are (1) the power ratios between the coupling and probe beams, (2) the openness of the excited state, and (3) effects of the neighboring states due to Doppler broadening in a real atomic system.

Optical properties of an N-type system in Doppler-broadened multilevel atomic media of the rubidium D2 line

Yi Chen, Xiao Gang Wei, Byoung Seung HAM

We report the observations of Mollow sideband-like transparency windows in a Doppler-broadened four-level N-type system of the rubidium D2 line. A pair of enhanced transparency windows across an electromagnetically induced transparency line centre results from dressed state interactions of two coupling fields. The present observations have potential applications of using the symmetric transparency windows for optical quantum information processing such as multiple optical buffer memories and double slow-light-based enhanced cross-phase modulation. We also discuss the quantum coherent control of absorption cancellation, absorption enhancement and probe gain in a closed N-type four-level model introducing the atom flow rate determined by the population decay rate and control field intensity.

Group velocity study in hot 87 Rb vapour with buffer gas

George R. Welch, Eugeniy E. Mikhailov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev

We study the behavior of the group velocity of light under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a Doppler broadened medium. Specifically, we show how the group delay (or group velocity) of probe and generated Stokes fields depends on the one-photon detuning of drive and probe fields. We find that for atoms in a buffer gas the group velocity decreases with positive one-photon detuning of the drive fields, and increases when the fields are red detuned. This dependence is counter-intuitive to what would be expected if the one-photon detuning resulted in an interaction of the light with the resonant velocity subgroup.

Unravelling the Mechanisms of Electromagnetically Induced Absorption and Transparency in Open Degenerate Multilevel System: Effects of Neighboring Transitions

Zeeshan Ali Safdar Jadoon, Heung‐Ryoul Noh, Jin‐Tae Kim

Abstract Optical Bloch equations with and without neighboring hyperfine states near the degenerate two-level system (DTLS) in the challenging case of 85Rb D2 transition that involves the Doppler broadening effect are solved herein. The calculated spectra agree well with the experimental results obtained using the coupling-probe scheme with orthogonal linear polarizations of the coupling and probe fields. The mechanisms of electromagnetically induced absorption (electromagnetically induced transparency) for the open Fg = 3 → Fe = 2 and 3 transitions (open Fg = 2 → Fe = 2 and 3 transitions) are clearly determined to be the effect of the strong closed Fg = 3 → Fe = 4 transition line (strong closed Fg = 2 → Fe = 1 transition line) based on the comparisons of the calculated absorption profiles of a DTLS without neighboring states and those of all levels with neighboring states depending on the coupling and probe power ratios. The crucial factors established based on comparisons of the calculated absorption profiles of DTLS with and without neighboring states, which enhance or reduce coherence effects and result in transformation between electromagnetically induced absorption and electromagnetically induced transparency, are the power ratios between coupling and probe beams, openness of the excited state, and effects of the neighboring states due to the Doppler broadening in a real atomic system.

Effect of one-photon detuning on light speed reduction in a three-level Λ-type atomic system

Wang Bo, 李淑静 LI Shu-jing, Hong Chang +4 more

We have observed the reduction of group velocity of light via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and measured the dependence of pulse delay on the one-photon detuning in a three-level Λ-type atomic system. The results show that due to the effect of Doppler broadening the light speed reduction is signif icant in a range of ±600MHz one-photon detuning. Under the condition of consid ering the Doppler shift of frequency, the pulse delay as a function of the one-p hoton detuning is numerically calculated. The experimental measurements are in g ood agreement with the theoretical results. These researches provide theoretical and experimental references for controlling the group velocity of light by mean s of one-photon detuning.
