Squeezed states with thermal noise. II. Damping and photon counting

Abstract

We consider a single-mode radiation field initially in a displaced squeezed thermal state. The weak interaction of such a field with a heat bath of arbitrary temperature is shown to preserve the Gaussian form of the characteristic function. Accordingly, the study of the time development of the density operator reduces to our previous description [P. Marian and T. A. Marian, preceding paper, Phys. Rev. A 47, 4474 (1993)] of the initial quantum state. As examples, photon statistics and squeezing properties of the damped field are analyzed. Based on the close relation between field dissipation and photon detection, we derive simple analytic formulas for the counting distribution and its factorial moments. Nonclassical features of a displaced squeezed thermal state, such as oscillations of the photon-number distribution, survive in the counting process, provided that the quantum efficiency of the detector is high enough.

Squeezed states with thermal noise. I. Photon-number statistics

Paulina Marian, Tudor A. Marian

We investigate a free monochromatic electromagnetic field which is the superposition of a squeezed thermal radiation and a coherent one. The main tool in our analysis is the characteristic function that has a Gaussian form. We establish an analytic formula for an arbitrary correlation function, as well as its strong-squeezing limit. Besides the usual quasiprobability densities, the coherent-state, number-state, coordinate, and momentum representations of the density operator are derived. We point out the nonclassical oscillations of the photon-number distribution and find its generating function. Collaterally, displaced thermal states and squeezed thermal states are revisited as nontrivial particular cases. We examine finally the squeezing properties of the field using the distribution functions of the quadratures.

Two-mode squeezed states with thermal noise

Ching Tsung Lee

The thermofield introduced by Takahashi and Umezawa [Collect. Phenom. 2, 55 (1975)] is used to represent the thermal noise; it is generated from the absolute vacuum by a so-called thermalizing operator and serves as the initial state for generating two-mode squeezed states by squeeze and displacement operators. The ones obtained by applying the squeeze operator first followed by the displacement operator are called coherent squeezed states, while the others obtained by applying the displacement operator first are called squeezed coherent states. A criterion for the existence of nonclassical photon statistics in a two-mode radiation introduced by us in a previous paper [Phys. Rev. A 42, 1609 (1990)] is then used to study the conditions for the two types of squeezed states to be nonclassical states. Several three-dimensional plots are presented to illustrate the effects of thermal noise on squeezed states.

Nonclassicality and decoherence of photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum states

Xiang‐Guo Meng, Zhen Wang, Hong-Yi Fan +1 more

Extending the recent work completed by Biswas and Agarwal [Phys. Rev. A75, 032104 (2007)] to the case of m-photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum states (m-PSSVSs), we focus our study on nonclassicality and decoherence of the m-PSSVSs. The nonclassical properties are investigated in terms of the squeezing character, the oscillation of photon-number distribution, and the partial negativity of Wigner function (WF).We then study the effect of decoherence on the m-PSSVSs in two different channels, viz., thermal process and phase damping. In each case, the time-evolution of density operators and WFs of such states is derived analytically. After undergoing the thermal channel, the initial pure m-PSSVSs evolve into a mixed state that turns out to be a Laguerre polynomial of combination of creation and annihilation operators within normal ordering; however, they become another mixed state with the exponential decay due to phase damping. At long times, these fields decay to a highly classical thermal field as a result of thermal noise, but they still keep nonclassicality in the phase-damping channel.

Field damping in a squeezed thermal reservoir

Ho Trung Dung, Amitabh Joshi, L. Knöll

We consider the dynamics of a single-mode cavity field damped via its coupling to a broad-band squeezed heat bath. The density operator equation of motion is transformed to a Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) for the s-parametrized quasiprobability distributions. We show that the field amplitude, intensity, spectrum and quadrature variances can be evaluated easily using the differential equations derived directly from the FPE. The FPE is then solved subject to different initial conditions, and the solution is used to investigate squeezing and field state evolution. The time behaviour of the purity Tr ([pcirc] 2) is treated in detail both analytically and numerically. The general steady-state solution is found in the operator form. We also show that, when certain conditions are met, dissipation without change in fluctuation properties is possible. A comparison is made with the cases of single-atom damping and off-resonance field damping.

Nonclassical properties of photon-added two-mode squeezed thermal states and their decoherence in the thermal channel

Xiang‐Guo Meng, Zhen Wang, Hong-Yi Fan +2 more

We investigate nonclassicality and decoherence of field states generated with the non-Gaussian operation of photon addition to a two-mode squeezed thermal state (TSTS) using the normally ordered density operator of the photon-added TSTS (PTSTS). The normalization factor of the PTSTS is just a Jacobi polynomial of the squeezing parameter γ and the average photon number n¯ of the thermal field. We show that the fields in such states exhibit remarkable quantum features, such as sub-Poissonian photon statistics, the anti-bunching effect, and photon-number distribution. The nonclassicality is discussed in phase space based on the partial negativity of the Wigner function (WF) with two-variable Hermite polynomials. The results show that the non-Gaussian WF always exhibits the quantum interference structure caused by the two-mode squeezing operation and has some negative regions for any value of n¯, γ, and the photon-addition numbers m, n. In addition, the effect of decoherence on the PTSTS in the thermal channel is studied by analytically deriving the time-evolution WF. We find that the WF becomes Gaussian (corresponding to a classical thermal state) at long times, losing its nonclassicality as a result of decoherence, and a larger m (or n) leads to a longer decoherence time κt.

Thermal-field effects of photon statistics in resonance fluorescence

Saad S. M. Hassan, R. Bullough, G. P. Hildred +1 more

The photon counting statistics of the fluorescence of a single atom driven by a resonant coherent field has been calculated and the results checked experimentally. The authors examine the effect of detuning the coherent field and/or the effect of an additional thermal field on the photon counting statistics. They work with a master equation that they have used previously and derive exact results for the probability distribution function P(n, tau ) for the emitted photons and for the normalised second factorial moment Q. The subPoissonian character of the photon statistics, for which Q<0, is most pronounced for weak thermal fields or weak detuned coherent fields. For short counting times tau the statistic is dominated by any spontaneous emission that occurs, as expected. Increasing numbers of black-body photons tend to increase the Q values, as might be expected-especially in the case of an initially excited atom-but no simple rule emerges. The recent experiments in the microwave region on Rydberg atoms interacting with thermal radiation in (low-Q) cavities offers the possibility of observing thermal-field effects on the photon counting statistics.
